  • #Thunderhawk is a nearly 100 year old classic wooden coaster located at #dorneypark built by PTC or Philadelphia Toboggan Company. A relatively smooth ride and a look back in how thing used to be. Nice & easy.🪵 ‪@DorneyParkPR‬ Height:80ft Drop:65ft MPH:45

      It's gotten quite a bit of love over the last several years and it's been running pretty darn well. They could make some modifications to make it even better though. Maybe for it's 100th year

      You shoulda rode it in the 70's ! on a busy day the back seat was to die for! it would whip and beat you on the tight turns...it was AWESOME.

  • @jbb4670
    @jbb4670 Год назад +12

    i first rode this in the 80s when it was called just The Coaster and its station was actually enclosed and the train went through a tunnel like Phoenix does and the station itself was where the transfer area is now..

    • @brian7224
      @brian7224 Год назад +2

      Yeah they ruined the effect of the coaster's scare tactic with the cool musty air and the whistling of the wheels as you rolled through the dark tunnel.That got you "scared" before the chain lift...kinda like anticipation !

    • @mhtube01
      @mhtube01 5 месяцев назад +2

      The station was moved back when the ride's original skid brakes were converted to fin brakes. It has to sit on straight track for the fin brakes. It's a shame they didn't just leave it because it has to hit the brakes hard going downhill instead of braking gradually on both straight and curved track.

    Honestly the only part of the coaster I ever thought was "rough" was at 0:58 through that one element, and I haven't been back for a while now to experience obvious retracking. It didn't make me not want to ride it multiple times regardless whenever I have gone. I feel like this one also flies under too many radars when it comes to age and still being fun, thing literally has a wild bunny hill right after the drop, even "Hurler" didn't have that b4 it was turned into "Twisted Timbers" and either built THAT MANY years later, it is impressive.
    I do wonder though, what this coaster looked like before they changed it's layout, similiar but not as drastic as Kennywood's Thunderbolt back at the height of wooden coaster domination. They really did some unique things with what technology and whatnot they had to work with.
    Have to admit I still wish Hercules was still there, like it was great they had a replacement ready (and a 2nd very fun B&M with a jojo roll was nice) but since then they removed the fun Shwarzkophf "Laser" and now removed the always broken suspended boomerang. Would've made a great RMC (hercules), or being redone by GCI or Gravity Group. Of the latter, hope they get back on track with the Gravity Group Shuttle coaster, I think that would be a great addition that wouldn't be too costly, long as they make it still full length (not short nor shorter than full size-trains either) and with the elements that well, aren't covered here really. They could always check out the market for a used Shwarzkophf too cause how have they not realized that mistake by now lol.

      about the part at 0:58, i feel the same way. it’s a bit rough at that part and it’s the only part i get thrown around a bit, worse when you have your hands up.

    Looks like a nice out and back coaster to me. Its layout, with the double backing on the return, looks like a longer version of the now defunct coaster at Willow Grove.

    I rode this a week ago. It's pretty rough! Especially when you climb back to the top of each hill and if you are in the front the train is pushing your forward very unnaturally. It is bone-jarring. Still a cool experience though.

    Interesting seeing the reconfiguration of the loading area is now before the Transfer track.

  • @mhtube01
    @mhtube01 Год назад +1

    I woukd really like to see Thunderhawk modified for it's 100th year. It's a decent ride for what it is, but it has a lot more potential. If they moved the station back to where the transfer track is, added the camel back hill back after the first drop, added back the tunnel, reprofiled a couple the hills and ditched the trim brakes, it would be SO much better!

    When was this coaster named "Thunderhawk"? Growing up in the area, we always knew it as "The Yellow Rollercoaster" (mid 80s)... it was basically THE coaster of Dorney Park when we were kids. An absolute classic. Any other locals please chime in with your memories....
