I think the best way is to remove the slate and use a hook then you have a much better chance of finding a solid surface to nail roof bracket too, other way is not as good and the surrounding slates get a little damaged with the bolt, I also noticed you only used two 16 penny nails,I would use three for a safety concern. .
just wondering if you get a galvalnic reaction of copper bib touching galvanized nail heads? would aluminum bib be safer, or, would the reaction be prevented by placing duct tape over the nail head before installing the bib?
Been doing this for awhile. Never seen rust streaking down yet. Besides, the nail is what would rust first and would probably take about 20 years to show and signs of the nail deteriorating. Good thought on using the duct tape, but natural vibration would eat through that, and make it harder to place the bib. If your really that worried about the electrolysis I’d suggest using epoxy (paint) with a nail polish bottle over the head, but again it will probably wear away.
Excellent post

We need this guy teaching the next generation.
In a way he is. This is Joe Jenkins aka Joseph Jenkins. He's the author of "the slate roofing bible."
