My Mom was raised during The Depression & The War… hence nothing went to waste in my childhood home… and certainly not soap!! Mom made “Soap Pouches” from all the leftover wafers of soap. She would cut 2 smallish squares (about 5”x5”) from an old facecloth or thin towel and then sew them together on 3 sides with an external seam. Then fill the pouch with the soap wafers, and lastly stitch it shut across the top (external seam, nothing fancy). We kids loved using the “Soap Pouch” in the bathtub. I just thought I would share this, as it is another way to use up leftover soap. Thanks for always being so thrifty and resourceful Gittemary… my Mom would have loved you!! 🌎💦Ⓜ️ary💕🧼
Thanks for sharing this. It's so cool.
@@meenanatarajan18 You’re welcome… and yes, it is cool! Ⓜ️ary
I knit and crochet and make little soap saver pouches to put bars of soap in to use in the shower and that way when you get down to the slivers you can just keep using soap in the little pouch!
What happened was, you had some glycerin-based soaps - black - and some alkaline processed soaps - the ones that grated into powder. Alkaline soaps don't remelt, but the glycerin kinds will hold the powders together. Nicely done. Love "Frankensoap."
I think you should try melting it even more so it is more liquidy and then pour it immediately to a silocone muffin mold, you can get that out more easily when it cools down 😊
omg of course!!! I even have silicone molds at home, now I am low key embarrassed that I didn’t think of that 😭😂
@@Gittemary no worry a muffin mold isn't the first thing you would think of while melting soap 😂 and for some more tips I find choping soap with knife less messy then using a grater, you can also try separating it by colours and pouring it in layers to achieve some more colourful soaps 😊
Though meatball of death is the best ❤💀 the bigger ones lowkey look like terrazzo tiles, which is so cool 😄😊
I was thinking the same thing aha
Usually I just take the sliver of old soap, wet it and stick it onto the new soap bar (kind of have to get it soft, then push/mold it into the new soap, then let it dry for a while, to get it to stick) and use it up that way, so I only ever have one bar of any type of soap going at a time, but I'm tempted to try this now, if only for the fun/chaos!
I do this too, and also use my fingernails to make a kind of crosshatch in each piece before attaching them.
I usually grate mine, melt it down, add a few teaspoons of vegetable glycerin, then put it in an upcycled foaming soap dispenser and use it for hand soap.
loved this! I also do the same with candles and create a Frankencandle and use a piece of an old cotton TShirt as the wick :D
That works for the wick? Awesome😍
Barbara is a PERFECT frankensoap name !!
Barbara is is then 😎🔥
I usually just start using a new bar together with the sliver left of the old one. When you use them and kind of rub them together with water it will make them stick together. I do use the method you're using in the video for candles though :)
I always use the same soap, for shampoo bar and body so I am going to keep the scraps seperatly so I can make the same soap again haha. Thanks for the tip.
"her name is Barbara" love it
"Her name was Barbara"! Hah, you've definitely inspired me to make some soap!
You could put the tins into the freezer for maybe 2 hours and bang them upside down on the counter and they fall right out. Works with candle jars too
I enjoyed the video very much and also your sense of humour :) Here are some well-tried tips. I think the grated soap should be melted even more to produce a very thick smooth paste, then left to dry in the tins for a few days. The way you did it, I'd be afraid the soap bar might soon crumble into small pieces, and clog the drain. What I do with our soap leftovers is liquid soap. Easy and lazy way! Take a jar, add a bit of hot water in it, drop the soap scrap broken into pieces (no need to grate), shake it a bit and close the jar. Later each time you have a scrap of soap, just add it to it and shake. With time, you'll get liquid creamy hand soap, or even a thick paste which you can use to clean the bathroom, toilet bowl, or anyting you want (you can add bicarbonate of soda to make it a bit abrasive). If like me, you do this with true green olive oil soap you can also use it as a stain cleaner on clothes and fabric, or even to protect your plants from bugs, it's very effective! Finally, once I put too many soap pieces and too little water, it became very thick, I forgot about it and by mistake it became a soap bar or rather a soap cake! I had to cut the bottom of the plastic bottle to get it out and was so excited as it made a great dish soap cake!
Now I cannot wait for my jar of little soap pieces to be full! So excited to try this. You are an inspiration :)
what a great video - just thought that a template lined with greaseproof paper with 'handles' to lift out would make it simple to lift away cleanly - sorry about the pun. Going to try the technique when i have rescued all those soap odds and ends
I have done this! But I now use a little fine mesh bag and put my soap scraps in it until it is pretty full, then use it until they are gone and start again. This is easier for lazy me.
I follow the same plan. My soap bag hangs in the shower collecting any scraps of soap my husband finds to small for his use or small bars from a hotel. I also make my own soap, shampoo bars and conditioner bars. Tallow, lard or olive oil. 💙
@@hollyjobitner3285 amazing. Making my own soap like that is a goal for me
I found it most helpful In the personal soap making plan is to keep it simple. I like recipes that call for specific measurements. Scents and colorings for me are not necessary. Things like ground oatmeal and honey are a reasonable place to start. Quality and frugality. When I first started, I kept fat that I poured off of different meats in my freezer. The next step for cleanliness is to clarify the fat to remove any meat particles. Begin without much investment and you’ll be happier. 💙
@@hollyjobitner3285 I love that. Living goals. You're awesome 💚
I found it easier to put the soap in a pot, cover it with water, no more than just above, boil and then pour into a silicone mold. I also used a glass jar lid + covered it with parchment or wax paper and then taped the paper to the back of the lid. I then froze the soap after to speed drying and then took it out after a few minutes to leave until I thought it was completely solid again. Afterwards I just untaped the wax paper/parchment and pushed the soap off of it.
I attempted to microwave the soap but it made the soap dry and didn’t melt. Also I don’t have silicone molds so I just resorted to a glass jar lid
A fantastic zero waste soap hack video Gittemary. This is much better for the animals, the planet and humanity. Love 🥰 the video and love 💕Gittemary.
Love this! been saving my soap to make a giant mega soap!!!
Love this! I've been saving soap scraps but all the tutorials I've seen use either used tetra packs or silicone molds, which I don't have. Glad to know I can just use the tins I have saved for blade recycling :)
We did this as kids (early-mid 1960's) using old tuna cans lined up along the edge of the bath tub....Tuna cans both rust and corrode and, I would recommend a glass container. Simply breaking the original soap bars up left us with crumbles which more often than not left the resulting bar disintegrating when in use. Creating a slurry out of the original bars then letting it dry in the tuna cans, in the humid bathroom, along side the tub subject to additional splashes - made them take up to months to dry out AND subject to growing mold. We didn't have microwaves back then but, im not sure our utilitarian bar soaps without oil-added moisturizers would have melted in a double boiler; we knew better than to ask to try to use the upper end, prized double boiler for soap however. Shredding the soap ends, adding less water to slurry the shreds together, and a dryer environment was what we were concluding about the time my mother ended the soap making experiments with mold in one of the rusty tins, cold slime in another, and one which might have made it 'cause we used the new serated steak knives (another set of issues all together). Plus, we may have been creating soap ends at an accerated pace.
neat idea. i used to cut up melt and pour soap and add scents to it. then i finally got to making my own homemade soap. i enjoy making soap its a fun hobby to have. and ive enjoyed giving my homemade soaps to neighbors, friends and relatives. nice to meet you.
Some soaps expand tremendously when placed in the microwave. I learned about this through experiments as a child.
I learned this through experiments as an adult, clearly 😂
Barbara.. Washington? McClean? 😁👍
I use old sock, i put bits in it and use it also like rubbing sock for my back ^^ 2 in 1
"Well if it's a Google thing, then it's fine..." 🤣🤣🤣
Seeing you collecting the soap pieces finally also made me put up a jar in the bath for the tiny soap bits! I'm actually looking forward to the frankensoap!
Love this video. Obsessed with any "chaotic energy" of yours. Love you. Also your outfit is amazing. Black tights and black skirt with that top combo? Incredible.
Haha you are so super funny! Love love love your humor. Keep up the good work :-) Doei! From the Netherlands
Chopping soap is very satisfying
It is 😍
Can you make a video about candles? Their impact and what alternatives you have
Thank you so much for the diy idea, definitely will try this
This was weirdly inspiring. I'll be trying this!
I enjoyed the video a lot, but I do not have your levels of energy and patience! I just buy flat rectangular pieces of soap and when the current soup is starting to get thin, I wash my hands with both the old and a new bar of soap. Then, I press the two wet and softened pieces of soap together really hard, move the combined piece around in my hands a bit more to have smoother edges and let it dry. This gives you a layered soap (potentially with different colors and smells) without any melting and fuzz. The first two or three times I use it, I handle the bar with a bit of care, but then it is usually just one solid bar. When it becomes too thin...
Thanks G. The moral of the story is perhaps to buy white soaps so that it looks nice when they are all melted together again. No more punk soap bars!
I have been making soap myself for close to a year, enjoying every moment and doing lots of experiments.
It did wonders for my hair, and I was able to stop using all the beauty products and creams thanks to it. I'm curly so it was a real challenge to stop :)
Hey, can I ask, I also have wavy/curly hair.
Did you manage to find a soap or recipe that functions as a sort of gel? That is a swap that I’m struggling with because I find that I rely on gels still to get some hold.
@@stephaniesmith3544 No .. I searched for a long time and did not find. What made the change was the use of the soap I started making myself. It is based on olive oil and coconut. I washed my hair with it for a month twice a week. After that I already noticed that I do not need hair cream at all, apparently all the usual industrial shampoos just ruined my hair
@@יולהוייסבלך
That makes sense. I stopped using shampoo a while ago and I also noticed that my hair is healthier and less dry.
Thanks for the info!
Great video!! Hubby & I started a “soap bits” jar 🥰
Those toothbrush holders though xD
Loved chaotic diys 🤣
I normally have a soap saver bag for my soaps and a smoother one for my pieces of old shampoo bars and they’re a lifesaver!
Why do I feel like I’m smelling soap while watching this video? 😆
a big thank you so much for doing my request from last time! it's really appreciated. loved this so much, definitely going to do this soon, thank you dear! so glad i found you x
We love your content!! 💚💚💚🔥
😂 just tried this for the first time Saturday. I wish I would have waited for this video haha
That was very entertaining for soap making! Such fun! And now I've considered making soap... thank you Gittemary
"Her name is Barbara..." 💀... I just can't this morning! 🤣🤣🤣🤣
sorry 😂👌💀
I've always transitioned my soap from the shower to the sink as they get smaller and smaller. An inch of soap still works to clean your hands...not so much your entire body.
Your nails are beautiful!!
I recently discovered your channel and after just watching one video i had to subscribe! I had the day off today and was wondering what to do when this vidoe popped up by chance! I just grated all my bits of soap and melted them down, let's see how they look tomorrow! Thanks Gittemary!
I usually just slap the small piece of soap to my new bar when everything's soggy in the shower anyway. :'D
I think Google was referring to a soap base, which is not the same as a soap. I would stick to the double boiler method to melt grated soap.
i keep catching your *just* uploaded videos - fun.
Cold process soaps (made with lye) can be melted, but it should be done very gently with a double boiler or slow cooker with a small bit of water (the soaps lose about 10-20% of their weight in water during curing)
The soap google thing, is for soap bases, glycerin, when you make soap from melt and pour soap..... but at least it worked
Meatball of death, ha ha too funny… 😆 I chop up with knife, while water in pot boiling dump soap in double boiler method, then shape in silicone molds. Silicone much easier to pop out when done. Thanks for another great video. I also make our dishwashing detergent and clothes soap. Laundry powder = baking soda, washing soap, borax & some soap flakes, dishwashing powder = baking soda, washing soap, borax, vinegar for separate pocket for rinsing. 🤓👍💕
I wonder if this would go smootly with a bit of new sopa(that thingy you buy for soap making). Like plastic and virgin plastic. It is a good hack to remake soap. I just found that the ones that fall apart quickly or have pieces of flowers etc inside are not good in this proceedure
Bubblara...her name is Bubblara! And gothic chic is her thing
Okay I LOVE that 😂💀🙏
i just love the video. so much fun 😂🌼
I just have to ask… I’ve been switching out plastic bottles in the bathroom in favor of soap. I do love a soap bar and during the past 4 years I’ve used up every kind of soap on the market. While I’m super happy with my solid shampoo bar I just cannot find a hand soap that doesn’t clog the sink. I don’t want to give up and I don’t want to throw a harsh cleanser down the pipes to get rid of the oil film that forms there. Is this a common issue? How do people manage this? It didn’t happen with liquid soap, so I’m thinking about going back to that, just purchasing it in a refillable format to save some packing.
You can try pouring some citric acid crystals (here in Denmark it comes in cardboard packaging - it's far more concentrated than simply lemon juice!) down the drain and then some boiling water.
@@thebadfairyprincess thank you, I'll give it a try!
Så fin idé ❤ du kan også putte de i et lite nett og bruke de i dusjen til kroppsvask 🌻
Do you mix all of your soaps together (shampoo, conditioner, hand, cleaning, etc) or do you only mix hands soaps together?
Same thing happened to me when I used the microwave.
I used to fill a quart jar halfway with soap scraps, add water, & use a hand blender. It was my gel goop laundry detergent 😂
something about ✨gel goop😂 intriqués me 😂
Just a warning-that clogged my washing machine.
Same here, but didn't use a blender as I wasn't in a hurry, I just shook the jar from time to time during a few weeks. But for a quick result the blender is great! I just don't use it in my washing mashine, only for washing by hand, and it is also a great stain remover if made from true olive oil soap. I also use it to clean the bathroom etc.
@@micivalantincic8227 It seemed to work ok. I didn’t put in too much, just about 1/8c & I diluted that
@@Gittemary It seriously looks like something I had when I was a kid. Smells much better 😂
🖤
Can you do the same with shampoo bars?
Yes, the small pink scraps are shampoo bar bits ☺️
If you only wet your hands and not the soap, the soap will last much longer. The soap should never get under running water. Only touch the soap with you wet hands. Like your channel
I made one recently with the end of some solid pink hair dye in it. Hoping it doesn't stain everything pink haha 😊
Uuuuuh it might 😂
@@Gittemary oh it super will 😂
I have so many bars of soap and my mum refuses to use bar soap so I'm trying to turn it liquid but not having much luck. Any tips? ❤
So if you have fun doing that, awsome!! But why not just use one of these little soap sacks in order to finish the last scraps of soap
What about grating the soap in a blender?
barbara the soap hahaha
👍👌
Love this video! But you should never put soap in the microwave in combination with water. I did it once and the same thing happend, my family is still mocking me with it. The convinced me that if you do it without the water it will be fine, but I'm to scared to try😂😅
I mean…. It did work out tho, so who is laughing now? 😂😂
If you want marbled soap just melt the colors separately and pour one color into another and swirl it with your chopstick.
That is ✨next level✨
Just a friendly PSA: Please, please be careful doing this. When heating up and mixing up different soaps and bars you might be creating a bar that is unstable and unpredictable.
Some ingredients in these bars (including preservative ingredients) can’t withstand a lot of heat and could also react with each other or cancel each other out. Not to mention the bacteria that might be on these bars that are now encapsulated within the new bar. In other words you might be creating something that can be irritating or harmful to the skin.
I'm all for using up every last bit of product! 🙌 💚 But if you try this out, maybe don't use the finished product on your skin and hair but for housecleaning or laundry purposes. Also, before use, check carefully for any mould growth!
SOAPrah, just saying 💁♀️
genius 😂✨
(While watching the vid)
My Brain: *eat the grated cheese looking soap*
is the mix of smells from the soaps weird?? i have a few scraps that smell really diferent I dont know if I should melt them together
I tried doing this a few weeks ago, but it just became frothy and brown and lumpy, and wouldn't melt or set again 😭
You're not supposed to do soap in the microwave. Because of the fumes very detrimental. And also could cause fires
You use electricity and water to form that hybrid soap wouldn't it have been more efficient to just use the pieces up?
I’ll promise to save a tablespoon of water in some other project then 😂
@@Gittemary 😂 theres also the grater and the bowl...which probably needs more water to wash up because of the dried soap 😂
@@Annaconda1984 I hope you don’t hyperfocus on such minuscule details in your own daily life, that would be exhausting and deeply unnecessary 😅
What do you do if every time that you buy bar soap your kids turn it into small clumps of goo on your sink? A bar of soap is lucky to last a single day in our household due to this issue. We have several children, so it makes it difficult to even figure out which child is doing it.
Actually I believe that I just got my answer. If I were to just keep the bar soap in those tins it might just might be the fix that I needed.
I forgot that I wrote this, and was worried about account security. Lol
How long did you have to collect soap scraps for this? This is great btw
About 1 year ✨
New name: soaphia 😅
Okay see now that’s genius 😂
If you want it to be prettier, I would melt the different color stories together and then marbleize
Might be a stupid question but is it unhygienic or bad for skin to melt many different kinds of used soap together? Asking for a friend :)
I can’t see why it would be bad for the skin, all the pieces I use are hand soaps, shampoos or face soaps
@@Gittemary I see... sorry if it sounded rude or anything. But yeah love all your videos! Been a silent viewer for months now❤
@@connietaysiewwen257 no no not at all, I was wondering and tried giving some context that might help ☺️
Can anyone tell me the title of Gittemary's you tube video where she made oatmilk? Trying to refer to a friend in Germany and can't find it. Thanks. Anna In Ohio
You can search for “Gittemary plant milk” and I am pretty sure it will come up 🌿
@@Gittemary She actually found it thank you so much for sharing it. Anna In Ohio
I find that grating the soap scraps causes a "powder" to rise that can get breathed into the lungs. Nasty! I use a knife and cutting board and chop the soap scraps into smaller pieces. After the soap sludge is melted, I spoon it into greased mason jar lids and place the lids on waxed paper. I let the soap cure for several days, occasionally flipping the cakes over. When completely dried, the cakes pop easily out of the mason-jar-lid molds. I then let the soap cure several more days before storing.
I also thought about greasing the molds when watching this! 😊
Small word of caution - some soaps wont melt and will go on fire in the microwave....ask me how I know...
I can almost imagine how you know, but tell me anyway 😂🌿
@@Gittemary YEARS ago (I state this because I actually have a vegan bath and body co now haha) I tried to melt cheap supermarket soap in the microwave and what happens is it doesn't melt, instead it....froths up and expands. Then it goes on fire. Definitely don't try it at home lol
Soap pouches exist on online sites, saves time and energy from all this, yeah?
I wouldn't trust the microwave for this. Best do it in a pan with a bit of water.
"It's not very pretty" I think it is! Look at how much waster you saved from just going into the trash, if that is not pretty I don't know what is.
apparently if you put a tablespoon or so of water in it while melting, your life would have been a lot easier. for next time!
I did put in a little bit of water, I also mentioned that as a post-edit in the video ☺️
@@Gittemary ah! must have missed it. then a bit more water maybe? i saw truly batter-like soaps. anyways, good job
