Oooh can we have a "brands that are made to look like small sustainable brands but are actually owned by Nestle or Unilever" -video. I think greenwashing is strong in those

Unilever - for several months this winter they were advertising on RUclips how earth-friendly their products are by mentioning all Dove products (I believe) are in RECYCLABLE containers. Not made with recycled plastic - recyclable. This would have been impressive in the 90s… but now? Do better! 🙄

Great video as always Gittemary! That spray bottle piece reminds me of the woven durable bags that supermarkets sell (branded with their logo of course!). They're suggesting that fabric bags are something new when all you need to do is go back 50, 60 years or so and ask 'how did people carry their shopping home back then, before plastic bags were a thing?'. The answer of course is a combination of fabric bags or baskets, plus, people shopped more locally for smaller amounts of food at a time so there was never a question of loading up a trolley and putting it all in the back of a car, or carrying 4 bags of shopping home from the town! On a separate note, I remember watching someone on a YT video (it might have been Ramit Sethi) say that he chooses clothes/accessories without big name branding because otherwise you're just walking around as an expensive billboard for these companies! Loved your comment about capitalism and innovation too.... so true! 😂

In the US coach has a take back program for store credit & will refurbish, repurpose and resell the bags they receive from the trade-in program. They’ve also published info about working on sourcing their materials more sustainably. I think it’s a step in the right direction, but there’s more they can do to be a better company.
If anyone chooses to thrift a bag from Coach, learn how to fix the zipper, they break easily. I thrifted a coach bag about 5 years ago and have had to fix the zipper 2x since owning it.

@@spannajupiter Oh I mis-typed. I didn't get the 2nd hand bag directly from Coach, I thrifted it elsewhere. I have heard mixed reviews about their re-loved program regarding quality. Also, I could be unlucky with the the bag that I purchased.

Hi Gittemary, thanks and keep exposing these buggers! The only note I feel like saying is that I have reused a spray bottle for 5 years but it then broke up. I had to buy a new one as I make my own cleaning solution (water and vinegar) but I didn't want to buy just a spray bottle as I wanted to buy one that lasted. Then I think it's good that there are some companies around that make bottles that are meant to last and be reused. But this is the only exception 😊

The last segment of the video (around 12:30) reminds me of the idea of technological fixes- an issue exists and then a technology is created to offset or reduce the harms of the issue when it could be fixed without tech (i.e., heart disease: we have open heart and other surgeries when in some cases, implementing a better diet and more exercise in the general population can reduce the risk. but nooo the junk food companies want you to feel like crap)

The greenwhasing that I encoutered in Romania was from Jysk, Lidl and Kaufland. At Jysk I found so called "green products" that they were actualy still made from plastic. And at Kaufland and Lidl. Kaufland they advertise as "A certified zero waste company" when they in reality they think we will turn a blind eye only they install car charging station and they have recycling bins and green bags and sell products at half the price when they are about to expire. In the past they where good at selling products in bulk, back then you can buy from fruits, vegetables, bread, meat and chese to coffee, sweets and dryed nuts and beans. And now you can only buy fruits, vegetables, bread, beans, meat and chese, which I think is a shame to their past. At Lidl is the same thing, because they owned by the group who also owns Kaufland.

I’ve seen so many shirts like that, reminds me of when I saw a shirt all about mindfulness and everything at walmart, so mindful to buy a fast fashion t shirt… another thing is that plant based label, they really are putting it on everything like today I think I just saw a commercial for a plant based candle??? Or something that’s definitely not meant to be eaten, I also see a lot of products where they have big letters for PLANT BASED and then you find out it’s full of dairy and it just happens to have faux meat which I guess is good for vegetarians but at least say it’s just plant-based meat and not the entire product

the Walmart t-shirt that people had an issue with I just don't get why y'all have an issue with it. its just a coincidence its not that serious and shouldn't even be offensive its just people being little whiny cry babies. when it comes to innovation I ask you as well as everyone else what kind of "innovation" do you want done on the consumer end of things? big companies can do refill stations at grocery stores and use glass bottles or stainless steel and just keep using them and that would be cool its not innovation its been done before you cant innovate on much. when it comes to the medical field and research there is innovation I just don't see what you want for innovation on the consumer end there is nothing to innovate on.

To continue the saga of the reusable plastic spray bottle: When brands promote the "solid body wash" like it's this groundbreaking product.... But in fact it exists since the dawn of humanity and it's called "soap". I mean, come on... 🙄 Soooo annoying!

    • @katp4782
      @katp4782 Год назад +16

Well, as someone with sensitive skin I can confirm that not all body wash is soap! The key thing here (for me at least) is that soap is alkaline (pH usually about 9-10), and ideally a gentle skin wash would be technically "soapless" and slightly acidic (pH about 5.5). Having said that, yes, there's still a lot of marketing bs around it and they also don't need to be that expensive. In the UK I find it so hard to even find information about a products pH, but when I visited Switzerland last year, they had store's own brand bars of pH 5.5 wash that was as cheap as any other soap on the shelf 🤔

I have a t-shirt with the same words written as the Walmart t-shirt. I never realized the words spelled out cunt lmao. This is my favorite t-shirt anyway (it's a very pretty blue color) and I love it even more now.
Sidenote: I'm from Bangladesh and this is where Walmart probably made these t-shirts. I didn't purchase it from Walmart ofc. We have entire markets selling the rejects from these factories and I buy from them if I can't thrift 'cause these were destined for the landfill either way and this way, I'm supporting local small business owners and not rich companies/industrialists.
Also a depressing fact for y'all: these rejects cost around a dollar apiece for us buyers to purchase. Pretty sure the factories are still making a profit on these rejects so you can imagine what the factory workers are actually being paid.
Looked up the median wage for garment factory workers in my country. It's around 113USD/month for an 11hr workday (legally). The living wage in the city where all the factories are is 271USD/month. You guys (people from the so-called developed countries) are the primary consumers of these products. Please DEMAND changes from your brands and corporations.

Similar situation where I live, its difficult to find Thrift stores focus on second hand items bc its cheaper to buy Big Bulks of clothes from the US that didn't get sold and were destined for the landfill, sent them to mx and sell the items in the marketplace for cheaper. Big consequence of being neighbors of the USA, we're practically their landfill for clothes and tech that didn't pass the quality standards. And yeah those things didn't make it to the landfill and get a second chance but they are new and yes families live out of what they sell but I don't think this situation teach the producers of excess clothing anything to better their ways of operation.

I'd love for you to super sleuth into them and tear them apart. We all know planting a ton of trees isn't the answer. And I really feel like they just made a game to target people who care about the environment so they can make ad revenue off of us.

We call ourselves 'reduced wasters' not zero wasters. I agree about the NEW reusable plastic bottles. I am using 3 old spray bottles. My multipurpose cleaner in them is from a 5 litre concentrate bottle. You only add 20 MLS of concentrate into the 500 ml spray bottle and fill with tap water. It takes so long so use the big concentrate bottle. I can't even calculate how many so called single use bottles I have not bought, and therefore not thrown away or recycled. Side benefit is the amount of money I have saved as the original 5 litre bottle was only AUD$28, roughly €14
