    Don't feel bad if people perceive this as "graphic".
    You are speaking the truth about things you see on the daily. People need to hear it. People need this info when deciding on a career path. Not everybody is cut out for this.
    I am on the Nursing side of things. I may not see as much tragic things. But I've seen people die, I've dealt with blood, vomit, urine, feces, I've seen pretty bad falls. Prevented falls, seen injuries from falls. I found people dead and so on.... And not all days are that bad. But we have our days when it's a nightmare and we suck it up and deal with it. If we feel too sad, we hide our grief. Hide in a bathroom or wait to go home to feel those emotions. We have to be stable during the hard days. We enjoy the good days.
    If one cannot handle the good, the bad, and the ugly part of this job, they are not cut out for it. They need to know they aren't. Without this knowledge, how can the ones not cut out for this find and truly enjoy their true passions?

    Worst thing for me was a 6 month old not breathing. CPR was initiated and she didn’t make it.

    We have to be able to self care. We need to be able to function and care too.
    Debrief with your peers.
    Vent, use the dark humour, cry.
    And the thing that hits you hard may not be what you think.
    You can suck up some things and then what may sound petty when describing it breaks you.
    Ask for help and ask your colleagues how they're doing.

    Before I start my story, if anyone has seen the Public Enemy video "911 Is A Joke" just know that the EMS guys in that video were pretty much the ones who showed up in my story.
    Basically, a elderly woman passed away at my then place of employment. This is a bookstore and the store had hard chairs for the customers to sit it and she just appeared to be asleep. She was there a few hours until a customer noticed she wasn't moving and he did a check on her and noticed that she had passed.
    After he informed management, 911 was called and when they arrived they had requested that the store would need to be evacuated as they removed the body. That request was fine, but as the customers were leaving the store the EMS guys placed a white blanket over her - as the corpse was still in the chair - and a velvet rope be placed around the chair... so that she basically look like an art piece in a modern art museum.
    Had they simply left well enough alone I doubt anyone would have noticed an old woman seemingly sleeping in a chair, but the fact that they did that drew unwanted attention to this old woman. What made it worse for me was that they didn't cover her right arm and it had this huge ring on it as her hand was clutching the armchair.

    How did you know you’d be able to handle traumatic experiences before you started the job? I have a pretty strong stomach but I imagine it’s something I won’t know until I actually experience one firsthand.

      Long answer short, I didn’t 😅. You can definitely see pictures and videos of things but nothing is like actually being there. Some people do still have a difficult time with the things we see and others have seen it so much it doesn’t affect them. There were also people I knew that had to quit because they couldn’t handle some situations. As with almost everything, I think you just have to try it out yourself to see but with the right motivation I think you could handle it!

    What’s are some techniques you use when comforting a loved one? I’m on spring break halfway through my EMT class and haven’t really talked about it in class yet

    • @Alexia.Mishock
      @Alexia.Mishock  Год назад +1

      It’s very difficult but I usually try to listen more than speaking, I avoid giving any advice (everyone has their own way of grieving), and I ask about the person. Usually people like to talk about how great of a person they were and share memories about them. It is a very tough situation for everyone involved but that is what I have found throughout my experiences.
      Good luck with the rest of your EMT class and thanks for the comment! :)

      Dead people is dead.
      The kids you know shal die is harder to deal with imo. Talking / trying to " be there" for the parents is bad...

    I’m just getting my EMT cert to become a firefighter hopefully. Thinking of applying for theme park EMT jobs until I get hired as a firefighter. Do you think they would look down on that rather than a traditional EMT job that sees more action in the hiring process?

    • @Alexia.Mishock
      @Alexia.Mishock  3 месяца назад +1

      I don’t think so! Most people are probably applying with no experience! And there is definitely a need for EMTs so I don’t think you’ll have trouble finding a job at all!

      Career fireman here. They really don't care. Any department worth its salt will actually want to mold you from the ground up. Best would be 911 experience but that's just for your skills.

    I definitely have a hard time with traumatic scenes including death. My first day as an EMT student I had a GSW to the head. So it was also my first death...hasn't stopped me from working now but I definitely wish I could just turn off my feelings during those calls.

    I want to become an EMT becauseI myself have dealth with a lot of trauma and abuse in my life, since childhood. I especially want to help people with drug and alchohol addictions. I spent my whole life being scared but being strong and taking care of myself has been enpowering and my past has only made me stronger as a person mentally. I want to use that to help people, and I know that no matter what happens at my job I wont let my emotions overcome my actions.

    I am thinking about going into this field - did you feel prepared from the start to encounter such things and, if not, is it something you think you can adjust to?

    • @Alexia.Mishock
      @Alexia.Mishock  3 месяца назад +1

      I definitely never experienced anything like it before so I was not prepared from the start, but if you have a strong and adaptable personality with good mental and emotional health, I think you’ll be okay!
