    Today I take a look at the L3 Filmless White Phos Gen3 PVS-14 in a Vyper housing from Shooting Surplus.
    While they offer both a Mil-Spec and Commercial variant of this unit, I have the Mil-Spec version. Largely the same unit, but one having a higher minimum spec. The units I have, respectively, have a FOM (Figure Of Merit) of 2400 and 2600+. Overall, rally nice tubes, and when it comes to getting into the game of Night Vision, opt for the best your budget permits...

      tbf the only gen 3 tubes that arent autogated are the really old ones from the early to mid 90's there is a good chance that 99% of the tubes you will find are autogated.

    One ting to mention is thin filed systems are nothing to throw shade at. Some of the higher spec Elbit tubes such as YH/YG are coming damn close to hitting some filmless tubes specs and don't have the super high price tag. If you want to ball out then do you, but a high spec thin film system is pretty rad for sure.

    im so glad night vision is starting to become SO MUCH more normalized among the modern citizen. Its also CRAZY to see how far night vision has come in such a short time too from what I was issued in 2012-2016 to today. Such a major difference in clarity, sensitivity, gain, its unbelievable. What a time to be alive to literally pay for a super power
    I work in the Military Industrial Complex and i can give an explanation as to why the Spec Sheets are also ITAR regulated and thats because anything regulated under ITAR is not just the end product itself...its the drawings, the datasheets, everything that has to do with the end product even from production standpoints. We had a hack one time at my company where 1 persons computer got locked out with ransomware, and immediately we have to call the FBI and its all because of drawings and datasheets if those somehow leak out and has to go reported. Releasing a datasheet, spec sheet, and a drawing is no different than just giving an adversary the product in their hand. Infact, its actually better than doing that. Yea its weird its just numbers on how they perform and thats it, but its part of the whole package of whats controlled

    14's are nice, I've had 4 over the last 10 or so years. I bridged a couple of them but was never happy with that setup bulk & weight wise. . Just recently sold my l3 omni VIII with a spotless tube & a ton of kit for it & bought a PVS-23. A bit oldschool SOCOM but I love them!!! Yo can find good deals out there still if you have a bit of patience - Nothing wrong with these units here either I've just finally moved on :) Enjoy the Night in Green (or White) guy's!!!!!

      Change out the strap system for Team Wendy straps and properly counterweight them and I find HHV comfortable. Also, there are several videos of them taking hits with 9mm +p and even 10mm with acceptable results. For the money they are not bad. Are there better out there? Yes, but for significantly more money.

    What percentage difference in field of view is there between true dual tubes VS two PVS-14's in a PanoBridge.
    Is it worth the extra coin?

    • @PrestleyPlays
      @PrestleyPlays 2 года назад

      A month late but the PanoBridge allows you to increase FOV to realistically 75°, whereas dual tubes like the RNVG, DTNVS, and PVS-31s have only 40° like a monocular PVS-14. It may weight a few ounces more (the Panobridge system) but it has a good track record with its users and Noisefighters backs it with a lifetime warranty. I used an AX-14 arm of theirs and moved down to the prior X-14 arm and it has been holding my PVS-14 great for a while now :)

    FOM really is the only metric that matters when it comes to NV ive seen so many people shill for Gen 3 but the tubes are barely 1400-1600 FOM.

    • @Slipknotfanatic89
      @Slipknotfanatic89 2 года назад +3

      That's absolutely not true. FOM can be misleading since it is SNR multiplied by resolution. For instance, a 2000 FOM tube could possibly have less than a 25 SNR. Individual specifications should be the determining factor rather than FOM.

    • @nemisous83
      @nemisous83 2 года назад +2

      @@Slipknotfanatic89 FOM is literally the industry standard for measuring tube performance. its pretty easy for a tube to meet the 64lp minimum however a lot have terrible SNRI. However you aren't going to get a tube that is the reverse with excellent SNRI but poor resolution those kind of tubes simply don't exist. The reason why FOM is used now is because there is such a wide range of performance just in the Gen 3 market and people can often get duped into seeing its Gen 3 and get some shitty tube from the mid 90's with barely better performance than newer Gen 2+

    • @Slipknotfanatic89
      @Slipknotfanatic89 2 года назад +5

      @@nemisous83 FOM is not at all an “industry standard” for anyone other than those who don’t understand why FOM can be completely misleading. You absolutely can get high resolution tubes with a low SNR. If you don’t believe me, go ask TNVC, Gooningear, etc. FOM can be indicative of high SNR, or it can be indicative of high resolution. There’s no reason to judge a tube to be good or bad simply by FOM, and any reputable dealer should provide data sheets unless you’re buying Omni or just playing the tube lottery for cheap.
