Honestly no, I think mythbusters served a great purpose when it did, but I think the way we consume media has changed so much that it is kinda no longer needed, or at least that is how it feels to me. I actually enjoy these videos with Adam 100 times more than mythbusters, but that might just be because I hate TV in general.

Haha, but id say more like the martha stewart/tim allen lol . Bob ross was a painter that made painting accessible to every1. I grew up watching him sunday afternoons on pbs in the 90s. I would record his show via vhs. Then rewatch, & paint along. Bob ross expanded upon Bill Alexanders method of wet on wet and brush stroke techniques. Simplifying the process. Not paying attn to detail. Adam has expresses his talents using a variety of creations. Apparently, bob ross stated that his son was a better painter than he as he grew up learning from dad. Imagine bob created nerf guns too! Whoa, they shoot rainbows and coniferous needles!

I think it's just to compensate for the brightness of the yellow used, it tones down substantially.

Yeah, but it ends up looking like mud... Or worse. I'm with Lunartist on this one - a soldier would maintain his gun. There's little you can do in the field about scraped paint or worn metal or the various dings and scratches that gear picks up in regular use, so that's fine. But this amount of caked rust, mud and literal crap - which is what it ends up looking like - just seems like the thing spent a few years at the bottom of a lake before someone fished it out and tried using it.
I'm not against weathering and ageing of a prop - it gives the item a sense of authenticity. However, good wear tells the story of how the item was used to wear as it has - smooth edges around harness hooks, worn matches where fingers usually stand, etc. What we see on the prop here is more than anything artificial disrepair, which I'm personally not a fan of.
Not knocking Adam's skill in model-making in the slightest, of course. That's still an amazing amount of work to do in a few hours. It's just... I don't think the "rust" adds to the weapon's appearance, is all.

The real icing on the cake of this project would be to open it back up and add something to most of the hollow spaces to dampen the plastic acoustics and give it some heft. The plastic sounds really detract from the rest of the awesome aura this thing gives off!
This is one of my favorite videos, of any category! I was gifted a Nerf gun at a company Xmas party recently, and I'm hoping to do some customizations like this. I've done some model building before, but this would be my first time doing this kind of movie prop style painting. I would love to know how the "silencer" was made, and how it connects to the barrel?

Love this! For future try taping the clip where it enters the gun to keep the action of pulling it in and out smoother and less likely to strip that paint away

Outstanding build. Love the weathering/aging technique. One minor observation, you put the bipod on backwards, when folded, the legs of the bipod are supposed to point forward.

I used to do this all the time as a kid with my nerf guns, spent so many hours taking them apart and putting them back together again until they worked perfectly. Definitely taught me a lot about mechanics and building!

The Longstrike has, IIRC, poor internals without serious modification, and painting the magazine means it won't be as smooth to reload. I think he picked the Longstrike because it's one of the more attractive blasters, not for any performance reasons.

Yes if they are completely stock...completely overhauled longstrikes go for about $300...nevermind the fact that its been painted and coming with a real scope (which is probably worth $70 alone) and the real bipod (probably another $80), and then there's the hours of work he put into it.
plus it being made by Adam Savage means he could double the price after all that ;)
But this was obviously made for a fan, as a project. It's his job to make cool things and make videos about making those things, not selling them.
These pop up at Goodwill all the time for around $5-10.

Adam another good technique for managing screws is to photograph the part, then print it, cut holes in the screw locations and then put them in there, during the disassembly process, so nothing goes astray.

I purposely treat my AK-74 like crap (sans cleaning it, of course) to get that nice weathered look of metallic raised surfaces. Look at any pictures of AKs used in Afghanistan and Chechnya and you'll see what I'm talking about.

i picked up a huge scope from a garage sale for $10.00 and put it on the same nerf gun for laughs. this is a serious scope too. the guy i bought it from said he had it on a .50 cal black powder rifle that rusted up after putting it up without a wipe down on a trip up in Alaska. by the time he got back to Texas, the barrel was corroded and he just didn't want to chance firing it.

@@interstellish I could argue. I could say regular enough, I could point out pyrite crystals or snow flakes or anything that displays any kind of symmetry. But I know where that will lead. You'll come back with none of those examples are regular enough, it will devolve into arguing over semantics, intelligence will be insulted and it will just get more and more petty despite the fact it's a topic that neither of us really care all that much about.

Symmetry 100% happens in nature as does regularity but you used absolutely terrible examples, the only examples of it really happening are on a very fundamental level with cell structures, physics and the like. Anything we can see with our eyes is completely irregular because they’re under much, much more forces that shape it. Pick any 2 columns of Giant’s Causeway and you’ll find that even though they’re in about the same place under about the same forces that “about” becomes massive after a few millennia to where they become very different structures. Take 2 snowflakes; they’re formed in about the same conditions but the slight variations in air pressure, available moisture, slight change in temperature etc changes their shape, 2 leaves off the very same tree, grow in about the same but slightly different circumstances that changes their structure, size, etc throughout the life of the tree/leaf...

@@dodsonbolles6198 There is no misconception except the one you have. A gun is any ranged weapon that uses compressed air to discharge a projectile. "Nerf Blasters" is a trademarked version of a Hasbro nerf gun. The reason is because "Nerf Gun" is a generic term used to describe any foam dart firing weapon.
@@austinb192 except you also said nerf blasters are "weapons", but they are toy blasters. Another thing is nerf blasters do use compressed air to fire, but that's not the case with firearms. Firearms use a hammer to ignite gunpowder causing an explosion inside the gun to fire a bullet
Doodus the explosion of the gunpowder inside a shell causes a pneumatic propulsion system to move the bullet. That’s what a gun is, a pneumatic propulsion moving an object. It’s the same reason why they call pneumatic nailer a “nail gun”.

My guess is the kit was a PITA to fit and required further modification of the gun to get it installed. He didn't want to besmirch the company who supplied it (ModWorks) so he left the footage out. That's my guess.
LMAO Adam, this looks like the N-Strike Longshot CS-6 from a few Nerf generations ago. Same color scheme and everything. Looks badass, though; I wish Nerf would go back to the yellow and grey scheme.
TheOfficialCzex it's actually supposed to be an "updated re release" of sorts to the Longshot! Really wish this had the second, smaller gun for the barrel extension as well.

they don't have to. all adam did was a paint job and weathering (which looks awesome btw). their guns are supposed to be wacky colors. they're made for kids, designed to be appealing to them and help differentiate toy guns from real ones.

I did something similar to a Retaliator, actually, to make a more DMR-style Nerf rifle. Same mag, extended the stock with a bit of wood, put a longstrike barrel on the front, removed the loading shield and replaced the grip with a worker grip attached to the charger, and replaced the priming assembly with the more sturdy one from Mod Works. I was quite proud of it. It could use some painting, admittedly.

Holy crap most of this video is out of focus. Please chill a little with the zoomed in short focus depth, it makes the vid frustrating to watch
Low light, shallow depth of field, quick movement, one-man camera operation... It's not like it could have been done much easier unless they just mounted the camera onto a tripod and let the entire video be static and boring.
...yes it could have been done a lot easier. The zoomed in short depth of field constant close-ups that turn into a blurry mess, is a choice. Having a wider angle instead of that zoomed in one would have made the focus depth deeper and would have kept things much clearer. You can simply move the camera closer instead. They chose to go for the alternative and my feedback to them is that their choice is really annoying to watch. You might prefer this unclear mess but I don't. They have done lots of videos that didn't have this problem so it is not like they can't.
5chr4pn3ll I agree, but at the same time I don't actually know what gear they use. If there is a "they" and it isn't Joey shooting alone. I do see several angles, but I'm not sure whether he's running around and they cut it that way, or if it's several angles. But yes, you're right. It is personal choice, however, it's a much simpler way of doing it to just zoom in than run forward and back. That really gets tiring. Best option would be to have Joey on one camera for all the hand-held shots and then a static camera on a tripod to the side for the close-ups for most angles. The only problem I see is that Adam is a little unpredictable with his movement since he does think fast and move erratically.
They may just be trying to minimize with staff.
