I'm sure we'll all look forward to whatever content you create, whether it's two videos a week or not. :] I gotta say, it was great to get to the page of earth tones; easy to see why they're your favourites.
This was really fun to watch! I put it in the background while doing school work and your voice was so soothing to listen to, so I really appreciated how long these two videos were.
Every. single. colour. Man that's a lot! I hadn't encountered metallic watercolour in a tube before... Interesting, interesting. Might put the Copper and Bronze on my "someday" wishlist, except for some of those lovely~ earth tones that will just have to come first, should I get the chance!
I was literally *just* looking at Daniel Smith watercolours on Jackson's website (which I only just found through this channel, actually) when I got a notification for this video. You have me so hooked on Daniel Smith watercolours right now! I've never used nice watercolours, and I'd love to start a basic palette of Daniel Smith's, but they are so, so expensive! Thank you so much for these videos! Hopefully this will help my hunt for the perfect starters, and maybe for some special granulating paints unique to Daniel Smith. ♡ Your channel has really made me obsessed with watercolours and has helped me branch out artistically ♡
Very true! I'll have to rewatch your other swatch videos, particularly Schminke (and Da Vinci; thank you for the suggestion, Zarah), and this time I'll jot down some physical notes on the pigments so I'm not clouded in my decision. Daniel Smith seems to still have claim to my heart, though, with their granulating colours hahaha
Sarah - are you in the US? If so, check out Dick Blick for Daniel Smith. I find their pricing to be much better. Jackson's is based in the UK and great for European brands like Schmincke & Sennelier. Brands like Daniel Smith and M Graham are made in the US, so you definitely don't want to pay extra to ship US products overseas (and back) if you are in the US...
Sarah Parker-Ford If you are in the UK, Daniel Smith essentials set is £30 at Jackson’s and well worth it for the 6 colours that will serve as a great starter set where you can mix most colours. You can then add single tubes over time to your palette. That’s what I did, as I am on a very limited budget. It has taken me 12 months to get a palette of 15 DS colours together, starting with the essentials set bought from my birthday money last year. Christmas is soon too if you celebrate that, so drop some hints ;)
Are you already working on re-swatching the full Sennelier line on better paper to see this crazy amazing glazing properties we all hear about? I prefer bold, intense, high pigment colors so was thinking DS or M Graham BUT I'm so intrigued by this whole Sennelier "glows" and is so "light and airy transparent" description I've heard from those who love this brand. I'm not sure if that would mean it's less intense, less bold or if there's truly some kind of glow going on?
It's in the queue! Not sure when I'll get to it, but it will happen. They have a very transparent nature that is subtle on the first pass, but subsequent layers really pop :) I do have a few videos here on the channel aside from the first SWM as well. There's kind of a hidden one from this time last year where I paint a Dryad with them.
I haven’t tried them in watercolor yet, but I’ve used duochrome and interference acrylics, and you can glaze them over different colors for different looks as the underlying color somewhat shines through. I may pick up a tube of one of these just to experiment.
Jane Blundell's writings convinced me to get a Raw Sienna because it can be used with blues and they don't mix. Thus you can use them together in skies. I've found this to be somewhat true.
Denise, I have a tube of Burnt Yellow Ochre and it really is as red as the dot card. I think the brochure is wrong too. I also agree that its not transparent. I have Fired Gold Ochre also and neither of these are very transparent. I found them to be on that heavy side too. I should have bought the dot card because I expected more transparency in them. Have you ever had DS "Yellow Gold Ochre"? Its a soft goldish light sienna color. I have the name written on a full pan from several years ago. I had forgotten about it. I had put it in the pan myself. I failed to write down the pigment number too. But I cannot find it anywhere online now. I thought maybe you would know if this was something they once had and discontinued.
I have kinda stopped liking my Perylene Maroon. So nice when wet and fairly thick, but 3 days later it seems to become a 'dried blood' red brown look. Perhaps the DaVinci is not the best version of this pigment?
I don't like mine either. Most of the brands I've tried is a dirty dried blood color just like you say. I have used that exact description of it many times. The worst one I found is in M Graham. The nicest one that is the least brownish and more deep red is in Winser & Newton.
I don't know why your Violet Fantasy behaved like it did, but I have it too(dried in a pan) and it's one of my favorite luminescents! It shows much better on dark paper, and when you tilt it you see a greenish color:)
Have you seen the "confused black girl" meme? That was my face when you painted the burned yellow ochre. But if it is pr102, historical Sienna, then this might be the right colour. I just don't see why they call it yellow! They could have just called it red ochre. Ochre means an earthy, muted colour, not necessarily yellow (like how vivianite is also called blue ochre). Ochre comes from Greek ωχρός which means pale, muted. When it comes to ratings, I have to say there are problems with every company, even ds. I don't think they mention anywhere how fugitive rhodonite and sleeping Beaty turq. are. And they are very, very fugitive.
Indeed! I get "burnt yellow ochre" if they're roasting the yellow ochre pigment, but given that it's PR102, it's just odd lol. What I've heard about rhodonite is that it *oxidizes* rather than being fugitive to UV, so I guess that's how they test it. The transparency is a hum dinger though.
@@DrPhilologist kind of. From my understanding, once it oxidizes it never goes back to the other color, but the cause of the change isn't UV. From what I've heard. I'm not a chemist :)
It sounds pretty persuasive, with or without a degree. Oxidization is permanent in that it is a chemical reaction that changes the very structure of the pigment. Btw, since I got you here, can I ask something (somewhat) irrelevant? I was surprised with what you said about ds carmine in your previous video. Recently, I am craving for a "permanent alizarin" (I tried the original, fugitive one from w&n and I was mesmerised...). At first I though about da Vinci alizarine quinacridone but it would cost me about 80$ to order a big tube here (this is ridiculous by the way! What a shame Jackson's, arguably the only place with reasonable shipping, doesn't carry them.). So, I was conflicted between ds pr176 and pr177. I am not too fond of ds (especially their earths and blues) but I have learned to respect their reds. As I was about to order both tubes you pulled me back to that hesitant state!!! What do you think about these two colours?
@@DrPhilologist I'm sorry I haven't used the PR177 much for comparison! I do love my Carmine, but it's hard to know how the other one would be in practical application without having used it. I wish I could be of more help!
I just wanted to mention that i got a set of PrimaTek colours (the mini 6 set.) and literally. The hematite genuine was wrongly packaged. Véry wrongly. It looked like a brown on the packaging, but when i check it was a grey/black colour. I went back to the shop and the colour of the open stock tube looked completely different on the packaging! (I got a free tube though. Gotta love that store.) so within that i don't neccessarily trust Daniel Smith 100%
A lot of their labels are NOT accurate, that's why it's so important to use swatch resources! I don't personally think its a warrant not to trust them, but conventional printers can't replicate the translucent nature of watercolors. I'm glad you got a new tube.
Oh! The transparent gold ochre was from me - I’d recognize my horrendous handwriting anywhere! It was a limited Christmas edition, it might have only been sold in stores. They had a Hot Mulled Cider one year that was another earth yellow type color, they had a Cranberry once, etc. I have the tube, is there anything specific you want to know?
Thanks Kathryn! I thought it was you but I didn't want to accidently say the wrong name. Thanks again! That's so interesting, I had no idea! It seems pretty straightforward, I was just curious that there was no record on line 😁
Would you say that the colours of the video are well calibrated? Are they close to life? Because I am comparing some browns with J. Blundel'ls swatches (espc. Perm. Brown and Peryl. Maroon) and they look very dissimilar (your swatches look much warmer).
Intriguing! Haven’t tried MG PY42. I’ve been missing my PO49. Does your PY 42 do a similar beautiful shift from the mass tone to the dilute? And glow in mixes? If so, I’ll grab a tube! Do you find it opaque?
It might be because I'm on mobile, but I cannot find the scans of these swatches at all! The link at the top of the description takes me to a patreon post about the limited-time lion print perk (now expired) and there wasn't any way to search for it on the main patreon blog page. Could someone please give me a link to these scans?
You just mentioned Stevia, I found out the hard way that if you are allergic to the ragweed protein structure family, you might not want Stevia. My throat was closing up...needed emergency meds, thank God my daughter is an advanced care nurse and I had the emergency supplies on hand.
It's good you know your love limits. hahaha! * Totally agree about Tiger's Eye. SO beautiful as a stone. Can't capture it as a pigment.* I can never hear Cricket so don't worry about her making noise. Also, feed the her ASAP. Geez, waiting for dinner two hours in advance! Poor child! hahahahaha
I still have a full tube of it, thank goodness. I had ordered another back up and found it was not the same as my original. I also still have Quin Gold Deep with only the PO49 in it. Both Quin Gold and Quin Gold Deep used to be made with PO49. I still have a few back up Quin Gold PO49 stashed away. I bought several when I found out DS bought up all the last stock of that pigment and it would end within 5 years, which it did.
A wonderful explanation and demonstration the different types of watercolours.
Sparkly browns = DRAGONS!
Good one!
The dry dot of Tigers Eye Genuine looks like a sweet litte fat mouse 🤣
I'm sure we'll all look forward to whatever content you create, whether it's two videos a week or not. :] I gotta say, it was great to get to the page of earth tones; easy to see why they're your favourites.

I'm so glad it's a helpful resource, but remember, you have Schmincke too! They're lovely as well :)
Da Vinci is on a great sale at Cheap Joe's.. they're pretty great too.

Yay swatches!
I don't have any DS colors but I guess you could use the sparkly browns for some fantastic creatures with sparkly fur :)
Thanks so much for this series! 4 hours worth just in the last 2 videos, wow.
I just bought the yellow ochre because I needed one and remembered how much you love the DS version! Thank you for the recommendation.
I hope it doesn't let you down!
all those colours are so beautiful. its so hard to pick just a few natural colours. I also agree with you on the two black colours.

Excited to finish watching this video
I am very grateful for you doing this, it saves me a lot of money. Thank you so much!!!
What a marathon! Great job!

I use these cards as actual paint 😂. Fell in love with the duochrome colors too, bought them all cus I tried them on one of these
I bought nap maroon and my mom had bought me pery maroon…. So I think I’m set! Lol
I think I sent you a sample of the deep scarlet, too. If I didn’t I can. It’s one of my favorite earthy reds
You did! Thank you 💜
Jane Blundell's writings convinced me to get a Raw Sienna because it can be used with blues and they don't mix. Thus you can use them together in skies. I've found this to be somewhat true.

The Vivianite Blue Ochre just says “Blue Ochre Pigment N/A” on it. Sorry I don’t have more info!

Did the name of the channel get inspired from the show, In Living Color, from the 90s?
Nope, I didn't know about that until after! Watercolor - liquid color :)
Now I feel EXTRA old!
