  • To help you decide on buying the right telescope EAA or astrophotography FILTER i did a full side by side comparison between OPTOLONG L-PRO, BAADER NEODYMIUM MOON & SKYGLOW FILTER and BAADER UV/IR CUT L-FILTER with Nebulae, Galaxies and Planetary nebulae in bortle 5 with different night sky conditions and light pollution with my 12 inch dobsonian and my ZWO 294MC. Important details and information that will be valuable for your final decision.

I’m in a bortle 6/7 zone and was actually considering L-Pro or Neodymium filters and your review clarified a lot of things. Thanks!

As I’ve gotten much more into DSO astrophotography, I decided to try the 1.25” Baader Neodimium filter I acquired for visual use but hadn’t used that much. My city of 130,000 is classified as Bortle 8 overall although I believe that may vary from 6-8 depending on which portion of the sky is involved and where one is in the city. As far as street lights go, it’s a mix of LEDs and sodium vapor lights, with the latter being the ones closest to my house. I was amazed at the job the Neodimium filter did for the stars compared to no filter. The stars were far less bloated. So by chance I happened to have just what I needed resting unused on a shelf when I started looking for a filter!

Just found your channel and I am just getting into photography. A very amature. Using a Celestron 120mm Omni XLT, 1000 focal length telescope on a Meade XL70 mount with motor in RA and a SvBony 305 color camera. So, have gotten images of Saturn and Jupiter so far. I compare mine to others using similar equipment. They are OK. Just bought the Baader semi apo filter and will continue on this journey. MY site is light polluted but from what I have seen not like a big city. But, at 3,700 ft above sea level and very low humidity in the north west desert of Arizona USA. Even at my age of 78 ( for real ) it is fun learning from people like your self.

Another good video. I have Bortle 6 and mostly LED lights in my area from streetlights and my neighbours security lights. I think I will buy the Baader Neodymium soon. I have the Svbony UHC filter but its adds an aggressive purple tint and cuts too much detail on galaxies I think.

Thank you so much for such a quality review. I was upset), because just yesterday I bought an L-Pro and the seller already sent it to me, took it in addition to my Askar D1 and D2 for my OSC camera. But on the other hand, my street lights were replaced last year with LED ones and they shine only until 24.00 .. war .. but I still shoot in Odessa.

The filter doesn't need 2 threads because you usually don't put stress on it. It is screwed into other parts that carry the weight of the camera. Extension tubes and adapters have inside threads for filters.

Hi Tiago. Please I would be happy for your opinion. I did collimarion process with my laser colimator. I have it done bit I'm not sure that the colimation is OK. I will test it soon, when the will be good conditions for us. Trouble is. I only colimate primary mirror. I turn target of laser colimator that way I can see it from colimating knobs. I did colimate it well. Laser poin was in center of target. But when I rotate colimatot 180° so I have target turned to the input to the my dobson the laser point is not in the center of target, but is lightly moved. What does it mean? Bad colimation secondary mirror? Or what? Can you tell me what I should do better? Thank you very much. And also thank you for your videos. I look on your channel a thanks of you, my whife have 12" dob now. 😊

Thanks for the intensive Tests. I wouldn‘t compare based on the Color. Because the tighter filter curve has less „realistic“ color. Maybe you could add a Video wer you make a color calibration to the pictures with the stars.

Hi Tiago. Excellent video. Indeed this the type of comparison I was looking for. I have a worse sky than yours (bortle 6-7), though still very sodium vapor lamp based. I'm about to buy a broadband filter. The L-Pro is more suitable for my sky but threads in both sides of Baader Neodymium may eventually change my decision. Ideally filter should be placed between sensor and the cheap reducer, right? How should I do it with L-Pro 2"? Thanks so much in advance for your input and experience

Great video. I have a question. I do visual with my dobs. Will I see a improvement with filters or they are only for photography?
