    Hey Everyone !
So this 14-24mm lens looks really promising. IF you can tell I'm a little bit confused because I LOVE my 14-30mm.
It will come down to me being able to use my 100mm Filters on it and that remains to be seen... Although I know one company that wants to get working on a Holder already ;) fingers crossed.
Also I Know you all love sample images I want to hold off and take some really nice images with this lens so I will do a sample image video. I Just haven't had time to go out and shoot some great images with it yet, but I will very soon !
Again thank you all so much for watching !

As a landscape shooter (and big 100 mm filter user) I can't see myself swapping out my 14-30 for the 14-24....not to mention the cost element 😋. However, I am still very interested to see how the image quality differs between the two lenses around f/8 to f/13. Looking forward to your video with a more detailed look. 👍

I wouldn't consider this lens unless NiSi, specifically, comes out with a stepping ring or something that would allow me to use my existing 100mm system with the lens. So, I'm with you on this quandary. I'm also quite happy with the 14-30mm. Not to mention that the 70-200 with teleconverter is more tempting at the moment and I'm trying to convince myself to work that into my budget. I think it's time to start selling F-mount equivalents.

I feel in love with my 14-30 just like you. I sold off my 150mm filters and I love how small and compact the 14-30 is. If Nikon can make a filter adapter that can allow 100mm slot filters then the might have a winner. They should’ve had that at launch. It’s a rough year though

The practicality of the 14-30 and the 82mm filter thread was a big part of what got me convinced to go Z. I don't think I'd trade that for a little extra sharpness and a stop of light.
Really looking forward to the 50 f/1.2 video. I have high hopes for that lens.

In your testing, along with your usual process, please test specular pinpoint highlights at the corners, or just do a night time astro comparison if you are able. Thanks Ricci.

@@EvilNeedle90 Sure, that's a nice lens, but it hasn't got a 14mm setting. It depends on how well the coma is corrected on this new lens as to which I might settle on. I also think that with modern sensors f/2.8 is bright enough for astro, as long as the trade off is a zoom lens.

You focused so much on the filters. I'm pretty sure, that filters manufacturers are designing the adapters at the moment. Just wait a bit for it :). Regarding the f/4 vs f/2.8 - different purposes. I'd use f/4 as a go-to lens and streetphoto. For more demanding/challenging situations - take the f/2.8.

Thank you Ricci great insight. However, from a landscape/architectural/cityscape the 14-30 f/4 is a dream-come-true lens (compact, light weight, takes filters, and sharp as hell + extra range). So I think the new 14-24 f/2.8 will more useful for photojournalism. By the way, the 20mm f/1.8 s has already found its way to most astro shooters.

Hi Ricci, this morning, I have received finally the Nikon Neutral Color NC Filter 112mm for the Nikon Z 14-24 mm f/2.8! I ordered it in December 2020 but it was out of stock for months. I am glad that I have this filter. Accordingly, from now on, I can use my Nikon Z 14-24 mm f/2.8 anywhere, especially in the nature and even under rainy conditions (I like taking pix under the rain), without worrying about the front element of the lens.

I am pretty certain that big 3rd party manufacturers like Nisi or Lee gonna make their own filter holder for this beauty so you can use your existing rectangular filters as well. Anyways, it is already a big step up that you have the option to use circular filters. Man, Nikon Z system is getting better and better. Since I am into mostly shooting wildlife I cannot wait for their telephoto lenses like the 100-400. I can barely imagine what a Z 300mm F2.8 prime would do if the F mount version was already near perfection. Exciting times are coming, we gonna get spoiled :)

I have since purchased the new Filter Holder for the Z 14-24 S and it is amazing! My question to you or anyone else here, is it now worth it for me to keep both lenses? Seems kind of redundant, especially since the Z 14-24 is so small and light and really not that much bigger than the Z 14-30 S....

Hadn't realized it had such an interesting lens hood/cap system - I love the idea of being able to put a lens cap over the hood rather than the lens itself. It's just so much more convenient, and I love that Nikon is including all this with the lens. That might explain part of the higher than expected price.

Shows lens cap.....pulls out dustbin lid lol 😁 Whilst some will bemoan the filter issue with this lens, those who never use filters like myself who want a superwide fast f2.8 zoom for events will rejoice! As you said, the 14 to 30 f4 is likely more than sufficient for the majority of landscape photogs using filters who likely are stopping the lens down anyway. This completes the f2.8 trinity for event photographers and that's an important market. For those who still want to use their existing filter sets with the new 14 to 24 I've no doubt the main players in this field ( Lee, etc ) will have adapters availible sooner than later. I wouldn't even be surprised if Nikon hadn't already been in touch with many third party manufacturers in advance of launch ( much like cellphone manufacturers pass yet to be officially released external phone specs so protective covers are availible on the day of launch). You've already proved your existing Lee set just needs an appropriate mount ring, it's hardly rocket science for Lee to manufacture such a device and I'm sure they will 😉

For me the Nisi aluminium lens hood, a Kase Wolverine 112mm magnetic adapter ring and then the Kase Wolverine 112mm circular filters were the way to go.
There is a nisi 150mm and 100mm adapter for this lens, the later allows the switch to be used. The former then allow the v system adapter to be used.
While I am largely done with ND GRADS, they are useful but when deep in mountains or valleys or by cliff sides being able to take down, say, 4-stops of highlights to even out the exposure, while slowing down water is a big advantage. So magnetic wolverine CPL, night and various strength NDs is one route. The NISI 150 OR 100 with rectangular or square filters including NDHARD OR NDSOFT edged filters is the bigger to carry alternative. I put both in the car, but tender to only fly with the smaller circular filter system. Always leaving the cheap plastic Nikon hoods unmolested in their original boxes.

I almost always have a polarizer on my lenses, but I dont shoot a ton of ultrawide. As much as I love the 2.8 aperture, there is no way I will justify the massive size increase of the filter attached 14-24 f/2.8 over the filter attached 14-30 f/4. When I go to Z in the next year or so, it will be the 14-30 f/4.

    • @lcador9
      @lcador9 4 года назад +2

@@tofu5275 Your right, it depends on your use case. I produce a lot of large prints for gallery sale that were shot at 14mm and above f/10. Good enough just doesn't cut it. I don't want to be forced to shoot at 16mm to get better edges nor to stack images at f/8 or wider. I also shoot wide on the streets and at darker events where f/2.8 and a sharper f/4 just works. Quality does come at a price. Replaced the 14-30 with the 20mm f/1.8 and waited for the 14-24 to arrive. Did love the weight and size of the 14-30.

Only seeing a brief photo of the filter hood it appears that you could simply cut off the two petals and then be able to screw on an adapter for your square filters. If that is the case it might be worth it to buy an extra good and adapt it.

Should say extra hood at the end. Auto correct keeps changing it. Lol

Great video, most informative one I've seen so far. I have the nisi filter system for the 14-24 f mount and really hoping they can create an adaptor for the 14-24s. I really don't like the screw in filters.

Ive never understood why lenses do not have a filter thread on the outside of the lens. That way you could add an attachment and a simple way of adding a further step up to add a filter holder

I know this may not be the correct place to ask - but you do know a lote about Nikon lenses.
Is it possible to use the new Z teleconverters with the FTZ adapter and my 300 mm pf F mount lens ??
or is that just a crap solution ??

    • @shlawchablaas
      @shlawchablaas 4 года назад

He actually discussed that in his video on the Z teleconverters, it's pretty detailed. No, you can't do it, the teleconverters will not physically mount to the FTZ. You need an F mount teleconverter for F mount lenses + the FTZ

I bought the professional NISI 100mlm filter kit for the 14-30. Spent 12 or $1300 on it. I love the idea of the 14 to 24, especially for astro or National parks, but there’s no way I’m buying another filter kit.

at this point i'm torn between getting the 14-30 for landscape and maybe the 20 1.8 for astro, or just get the 14-24... if my squared filters work i think I'm going to choose the 14-24. cheaper (or pretty much same price) and lighter than the other 2 combined, but supposedly better quality!

    Hi,
I've been searching your RUclips channel to find a comparison of the image quality between the Z14-30 f/4 S and the Z 14-24 f/2.8 S. I found a video with a first look of the Z 14-24mm f/2.8 S and a video about using filters on that lens.
Can you please point me to the rughtvideo?
    Thanks in advance.

Though I personally prefer to have the filter on-board while shooting, as time went on, I found that it started to become less and less logical. Yes, I know it's been done for years. But all through my F11 and F5 days, I can remember racing through my filters to get the shot before the light changed. I can also remember getting myself all up in a uncomfortable fit because I wasn't fast enough.
I still use my circular polorizers and don't see myself changing that, but what I did change was having any other filters at the shoot. it was the fact that my best filters may cost $200 each and I'm placing them in front of the glass of a lens that cost $4K! Eventually, I had to admit that it didn't seem like a very good idea to cover up $4000 glass with a $200 filter.
Shooting in RAW images, the DNG files give me the subtle filter options I want in a post session. Therefore, the shot is taken through the lens's glass and the filters are added later on. I don't find myself in some frantic race to get the filter/s I need only to lose the light I had. I don't fell my blood pressure going up and the cost of the filters is no longer something I need to factor in, (with exception to UV and Circ Pol).
I shoot a heavy camera as it is, (Nikon D4S), and at 65 years old, the equipment is getting heavier with each trip I take. I only have to carry small 6-filter, bag strapped to my belt for the UV and Circ Pols. I know not everyone likes to do the filtering in post for a half dozen reasons that really boil down to personal preferences.
I've even put images that I shot with filters on the lens, next to images where I added them in post and then asked several people to tell me if they could tell the difference. No one could, (even I couldn't). As for the Z7 and the 14-24, I can see myself carrying around something like that in the near future. The camera body itself would be about 35% lighter than a D4S and at this point, that may be all it takes for me.
Thanks for the video. Of course, it was an easy thumbs up vote for me to make.
    Rich

Terry Breedlove I think B+W are the only ones who currently make such huge screw on filters (besides Nikon themselves, but they are asking almost $800 for theirs). I use the 82mm version on my 14-30 and it is really good. Very good conservation of contrast and almost no tint
