You have to show your boarding pass along with your passport at the gate before you board so they know that you’re not using someone else’s ticket.
You do when you board, depending on the airline. Last two united flights needed ID and boarding pass to board

Ms. Manager, if she's flying a commercial flight like most people, she has to fly under her legal name. TSA and DOT regulations and thus legally required. They can discreetly board you and refrain from announcing aloud unless legally required to but for security and manifest reasons, have to have your real name. Even charter flights too for manifest purposes.
