  • Hi All, I'm really enjoying this Excalibur! It is a bit hot on the landing so, I took the y-lead out on the ailerons putting them into seperate channels and added a Spoileron/Flaperon mix to a slider.
    Seems to work well.
    If you have any questions, please post them as comments and I'll get back to you.
    Cheers
    Michael
    I got mine here -

    And I'll run it with this -

    Flaps are not supposed to slow you down (though they will), they are to increase your lift. More lift means you can fly slower, so use them at start and landing.

    Just got my Excalibur the other day and man, what an amazing plane. I've put about a dozen packs through it already and I can't wait to fly it again. Taking it up high and just dive bomb it to hear that whistle as it comes past at 100km+ with no throttle is little listening to a beautiful symphony. Haha. And it carves up the sky just like the name suggests - a sword!
    I did have one issue so far and that's the prop getting stuck under the canopy when it folds back. A bit of tape on the side of the canopy fixes the issue, but it is annoying to have to do it before every flight.
    How's yours holding up? I know you crashed it on the slopes, but how's it been since you fixed it?

      G'day Vas, great to hear you've picked up one of these. It is a ripping plane for sure. I have taken it back to the slope a couple of time since the fix, but unless there is a lot of wind it struggles at my preferred location, my 1600 Phoenix is a lot lighter and almost as quick (at the slope). But off the flat field it is still running straight vertical up and then huge dives back down again. No issues for me with the prop catching on the canopy. I have added a rubber band to the canopy of my 1600 Phoenix though. It is to keep it on in heavy landings and to avoid the prop catching. I think the rubber bang is a common solution for the Phoenix canopy which otherwise just clips in with four small nipples. Plus easier to deal with than tape. Cheers Michael

    Very interesting. I have only used spoilerons to stick a slope landing in strong wind.

    • @xxMADxMICKxx
      @xxMADxMICKxx  7 лет назад

      Andrew Newton I did think the affect was going to be different, but really happy with the results. I'm going to build one if those delta wings that Allen has to learn to slope, I'll definitely add in this sort of mix for that one too.

      I think with a wing you just have to land it at speed, spoilerons will just flip it. You're welcome to borrow my old yellow sloper for a very easy sloping experience.

    Howdy Michael, they seem to work well! I've seen how hot those excalibur's come into land, so anything to tame them down will help. Matt

      Matthew Ogborne Thanks Matt. Yeah I quite pleased with the results. Especially since it didn't mess up the trim for normal flying. I may add in a tiny amount of elevator to the mix as well, but it really slows up the approach for landing. Cheers Michael

      Michael Downie Morning, I've pushed my "exceptions list" to far already this month. Have two new flying wings on their way to me at the moment. I need to have a clear out first & also get that Phoenix 2000 flying again before I add any more to the hangar :) Matt

      I did see you're looking at the pre-order for that Drak race wing (x2) so I guess you'll be busy with that one. I think that your Phoenix would be a reasonably similar to the Excalibur in some ways. Maybe wait for a Hobbyking sale to get the Excalibur hahaha

    • @RagTheNutsOff

      Michael Downie Ha Yea :) The issue with the Phoenix is there is very little airflow over the motor, hence why I burnt mine out the other day. Ooppsy :/ !

    I realize this is a very old video, but I just bought an excalibur from a friend. When you set the spoilerons, do you remember what you did with the elevator mix? It seems the spoilerons would push the plane down - so add a bit of up in the elevator? Thanks in advance!

    • @xxMADxMICKxx
      @xxMADxMICKxx  3 года назад

      Glad people are still watching! From memory I didn't add any elevator mix. Just had the ailerons on the slider at a mx of maybe 30% of full travel.

    Great video michael i always get a laugh out of your routines. Are the stress marks from just flying or any hard landings? Do you think they could weaken the plane for it to give in some stage later on?

    • @xxMADxMICKxx
      @xxMADxMICKxx  7 лет назад

      bob jones Thanks Bob. I do like to have fun when I'm flying, so I'm very glad to pass on the laughs. I think the stress lines are from flying hard or at least pulling out of the big dives. I would like to think they are not going to give way, but a little worrying with only about 10 flights on the airframe at this stage. It might be accentuated by the stickers and it is on the joins from the plastic to the foam, but I'll be keeping an eye on it. Cheers Michael

    so you had better roll control with spoilerons than with flaperons? did you happen to mix your elevator in to keep a higher angle of attack when on spoilerons or are you just managing it by yourself on the stick? Thanks.

    • @xxMADxMICKxx
      @xxMADxMICKxx  2 года назад

      G'day Jeferson, Roll control was fine either way, but my goal was to slow the plane for landings. Deflecting the ailerons up (spoilerons) seemed to be far more effective than deflecting them down (flaperons) . I didn't mix any elevator. The effect of the spoileron was to lift the nose of the plane, dropping the tail which gave it a higher angle of attack. Worked well for me.

      @@xxMADxMICKxx Thanks! I have this problem, a plane with high lift characteristics and a short space to land it on, and I have to 'nail it' right there. I think I'm gonna go with spoilerons then! Seems the way to bring it down fast without adding extra horizontal speed.

    Super flew. How much% have you set the brake (flaps)? Placed downwards for braking?

    • @xxMADxMICKxx
      @xxMADxMICKxx  7 лет назад

      Hi Martini. I have 30% set to the slider, which provides about 4mm up and 4mm down. I noticed that it will slow down with the ailerons down, but slows down better when I set them up. Cheers Michael

    nice video. hey quick question.. for 4s 2200 mah.. how many C does it has to be?thanks

    • @xxMADxMICKxx
      @xxMADxMICKxx  7 лет назад

      Thanks Bryan. As far as the C rating, I think the higher the better. I've run mine with 65c down to 30c. In the air I didn't notice a lot of difference. Cheers Michael

      Dont buy nanto-tech batteries, they are junk. Stay with Zippy with at least 30C to 40C, maybe w 25C but thats pushing it and with short wide open throttle passes, and recovery in between.

    This plane has a very high landingspeed. What do you preffer: falperons or spoilerons to land?

    • @xxMADxMICKxx
      @xxMADxMICKxx  7 лет назад +2

      I think that the spoilerons slow it up better. The flaperons give it more lift so it does stay in air at slower speeds, which is good for some occasional gliding, but for landing I add in the full spoilerons. It is not like air brakes or anything, but certainly helps wash off speed. Cheers Michael

    G'day Mike, how's things? I was thinking of jumping on one of these during the Easter sale. Just wanted to ask you how easy are they to hand launch? Did you need any up trim? Also, did you work out how much deflection for spoilerons and elevator? Cheers mate!

    • @xxMADxMICKxx
      @xxMADxMICKxx  7 лет назад

      RCWASP hand launch is a snap, three quarter power and it is like an arrow. I had my surfaces all level and didn't need a click of trim. The only thing I'd say is that you need a bit of space to wash off speed to land. And during the build be careful snapping on the control rod clips, I snapped two. It is a very precise plane and a lot of fun to fly.

    Did you ever try the prop upgrade to 13x8?

    • @xxMADxMICKxx
      @xxMADxMICKxx  7 лет назад +1

      G'day Jase, no change to try prop for me. I have not really felt like it needed more prop. So considering the reports of the firewall cracking, although I have never had any sign of that, I don't want to risk any anything by changing the prop. It is warm enough for a warm liner...
