Hi Karen, just found your channel. Thanks for the inspiration.
I used to be a woodwork teacher, now writer, watercolour artiste', use ink and collage too. I started in art school, art teaching, but really I never taught art. Printmaking and etching was my true love in art school and uni.
When I was young I had a real lot of trouble with sketchbooks.
I am growing to like them, and follow utubers, "The unexpected gypsy" and "Adventuredenali" and have had a lot of inspiration. Size matters , and as a kid, it is hard to know why a sketchbook felt wrong, and you can't explain "the exploration" as a child....it wasn't just the white, the stark, the contrast, the personal holding, the blankness, the perfection, but it was size! (and content)
I am not an urban sketcher, but I do like to go to the Botanic gardens and sketch the plants and structures there, and want to do more of that with Jane Blundell.
So I suppose it was also the "topic/content" as a child that I also didn't really feel right about. I always felt like it had to be of a "thing"...and it often floated in the white of the background.
Only as an adult can I use them for just colour fields, and playing with marks without the feeling to need to put "something" in them.
I really like your adding space up and down, never thought of that!
Collage and abstraction never came to mind in a sketchbook for me as a younger person.
    I wonder why that was?
Do you think it is abstraction, and that is just a natural progression as an adult?
I think your channel has the possibility of reaching children with this dilemma!
I love the Etchr ones and have bought a few just in case they stop making them. (it happens) I use small handmade watercolour 100 percent cotton journals for swatching ink and watercolour. I have also found some thin paper journals great for collage from China.
The concertina sketch books are intriguing...
Can you tell me how you hold the snake when working?
When out and about, is it just a matter of working on a small section, with bulldog clips?
Could you give me the name or link to the concertina ones that you like?
    In kindred spirit

Hi Eliza in Sydney! Thank for your thoughtful comments. Firstly I use Seawhite sketchbooks from www.artesaver.co.uk They are difficult to get in Aus, when I came over a couple of years ago I brought a suitcase for a mini workshop! Debbie McKinnon uses them alot, but I think that she makes hers. Regarding the snake 😀yes, I use clips or big elastic bands to hold the two ends of the snake compact.
I know that I am veering more towards abstract, I taught in school and we always encouraged collage in sketchbooks.
      Keep creating! 🙏🏽

    You are very talented 😊
Your art studio reminds me of where I use to take my art lessons.
My choice of art was mainly Cartooning.
However I also took pastel, oil as well as chalk. In addition to basic drawing from life, and water coloring.
Cartooning has been my prime choice of art since my teen's.
By the way I've been told in order to draw even comic's one has to understand human anatomy.
I disagree, though wanted to get your thoughts on that.

Hi Mike, I don't think that you do either. I think that a love of the human form and humanity in all it's forms helps. A connection to your subject 🙂

I've just discovered your work and absolutely love it -- if your google search has suddenly spiked, that would be me. :)
I am I'm curious -- are your concertina book pages one long piece of folded paper? Or are they several strips of folded paper attached to each other with masking tape or some other kind of tape? Many are using masking tape and I am wondering if there is a better option.
