One reason I think the Portuguese roads are so well maintained is that they don't have freezing cold temperatures which causes the roads to break down due to freeze and thaw of water. Also they don't have to salt the roads to melt the snow or ice like we do in Canada.
Coming from tropical Hawaii where the roads are third world, I'm not so sure about that. That aside, thank you so much for taking the time to watch our video and hope you'll stick around for more!
@@dainasworldnumbers88 thank you so much for watching and appreciate your comment very much. Glad it was informative even if a bit after the fact. Please share with anyone else you know visiting Portugal. 🇵🇹 cheers!
4:10 - I think you misunderstood what the dealership person said, there's no ban on 4 cylinder engines or above in Portugal. That would be absurd. In the urban option the majority of ICE vehicles are 4 cylinder and every rental car company have luxury options, where you can find vehicles with 6 or even 8 cylinder engines. 5:38 - In Portugal it's impossible to put diesel on a gasoline vehicle because the width of the gasoline's filling pipe is narrower than the the diesel nozzle. Unfortunately, for that same reason you can accidentally put gasoline in a diesel vehicle. 10:35 - There's no such thing as a fast lane in Portugal and the slow lane only exists on steep uphill sections and it's mainly for vehicles that lose speed in those sections due to transporting or towing cargo or to being old and underpowered. You can drive at the speed limit in any lane (bearing in mind that it's mandatory to keep right on motorways). 20:15 - Some of those signs are wrong: the signs that indicate the end of a prohibition are all grey, the expressway/motorway sign is blue and the "One Way" sign is square.
Thank you so much for your reply and it is quite possible I was misinformed at dealer but do keep in mind also my tongue-in-cheek humor along the way. "Mandatory to keep right" on the motor ways is what was being referred to in terms of the lanes. Thanks again for watching!
We rented a car on Faro and road tripped all over the Algarve for 3 weeks. The tolls??? Were a necessity if you didn't want to get stuck in small town dinky roads behind a tractor or a large truck... In a roundabout. We have runabouts in Calgary EVERYWHERE. So no problem driving in them. You just have to assume just because YOU know how to navigate through them. Not everyone stuck in them knows what they're doing. Gahhhh But much better scenery on the non toll roads. But it's inevitable to get pissed after a long day of getting stuck behind local traffic... Just take the toll. There were days we spent more in tolls than petrol. We rented an automatic. Hang the $$$. Neither of us (sisters in our 60s) know how to drive standard. Our Airbnb's was at the marina in Albufeira(right in the middle of the Algarve but... No suitable transit except a hop on hop off little tourist train). For a tourist supposedly party town tourist trap no good transit was surprising. We usually walked into old town to avoid the non existing parking & toke those overpriced putput (sorry forget the name of them) things back if were we knackered. Did that only once... Very overpriced. Had to rent a car in Terceira Azores after being their for 4 days in Heroismo. Great transit in the town but that's about it. Had to rent a car to explore the island... So many steep Hills for getting about. Sorry we didn't do it sooner. But we didn't know what we were doing just got on a cheap cheaper than cheap excursion March after covid in/22. Bucket list trip for my sister for years. She finally convinced me to get on a plane because it was sooo cheap. Sick of all the lockdowns might have convinced me too. I guess the Azores really suffered over covid with no tourists, all the lockdowns etc so subsidizing excursions on SAS and hotels was the way to get tourist $$$ back. It sure worked. I was surprised with all the EU subsidies how much cheaper the Azores were than Hawaii. My sister has a time share that gets used for the months from mid Dec to March. I dropped in finally and wanted to see what all her hype was about for the 20yrs she spent on the island. DID NOT LIKE IT. Might have been that trump was about to take his first office? So many angry people everywhere... But found the homeless, drugs, crime, mental health etc... Frightening. And sooooo expensive. The Azores were like night and day in comparison to Maui. Sorry this got sooooo long Just started my D7. Waiting to see what happens with the new visa crap by March. Also started visa process for Spain. See which one comes in first for passive income. Not planning on buying anything. Malaga or Eastern Algarve??? It's a toss-up for me. But leaning towards Villa Real'/Ayamonte Portugal side. 🇨🇦 Looking for no more snow and warmer winters
@@upcycledcopycat8389 thanks for your comments and we look forward to spending more time in the Azores as well. All the best with obtaining your D7 soon! 🙏
Thanks for the video! I'm worried about the roundabouts as we don't have any where I live in Toronto. They look a little scary to me. I don't think I will drive there until I'm more comfortable with the terrain. Btw, here in Canada we call the 'thingy' that automatically charges you for tolls a transponder. 😂
Yes, the roundabouts can be a bit intimidating at first but you do get used to them. "Transponder", now that makes sense, lol! Thanks so much for watching and hope you'll stick around for more content coming your way. All the best!
