We “repurposed” at 55. No more corporate craziness. Went to Tech College and learned HVAC. Now I can fix the Heat and AC for single moms, the elderly and other people on a tight budget. We don’t need the money so most of it is free or just my cost of equipment. We are God’s handiwork, created for good works in Christ
A P - Actually I was 58. Just turned 60. Just finished a year long apprenticeship. Learned so much from my 63 year old journeyman and 64 year old contractor.

My mom went to nursing school in her 40s and now at age 59, she makes 75K as a RN. You can do this! 👍
That’s awesome because I’m almost 40 and am considering a nursing degree (RN/FNP) as a backup.

I'd say go back to work, even PT, or volunteer.

People have been known to start new careers at 60 or even 70.

Caller: "I am forty."
Dave: "How old are you?"
Caller: "I am forty."
Dave: "You are forty, right?"
Caller: "Yes."
This pattern is what I have noticed taking place on the show recently. I swear, Dave no longer really listens to his callers.
Daniel Valiente He’s an older guy lol give him a break. He’s bringing in personalities to help him too
Dave does this every call. I even wait for it to happen and keep count. We bet on it at times.
He has a military pension, which takes 20 years, and was a cop for 7 years. So he joined the military at 13?
Lol I noticed that. He was focused in the bigger stuff not the personal details. I notice that with him. I think it is part of his personality plus age may be a factor as the other commenter mentioned. And with his popularity and experience I think he just doesn't slow down to listen thoroughly as much as he used to because he doesn't have to. Lol
Age is not a factor. The guy runs multiple businesses with thousands of employees. I'm sure his mind is working wide open but that means he is not always present in the radio conversation.
Yeah, he needs to work for his emotional well-being, not financial well-being. Even if it's just volunteering somewhere. Retirement = idleness causes death of the soul, and then early death of the body.
Problem is you guys keep saying "work".
I've already spent 3 months under quarantine since April and now retired.
Probably more active than you.
I figure you must work sitting at a desk.
Completely possible! I’m 35 and decided to finally go to university, I’m a FTIC student and I’m studying for my bachelors in Mathematics. Got in on a full scholarship and I have a 4.0 GPA, my plan is to get my PhD in applied mathematics with a cryptography and machine learning focus. I was worried about starting so ‘late’ but have been told by my department heads and internships that age is not a problem it’s all about ability! San Antonio, Texas was an excellent choice. The west coast especially Portland is attracting the drug addicted homeless population and the state government of Oregon like California punishes success.
Wow wasnt expecting to get so inspired ! Great work guys :)
The math is off: 40-7 (cop)= 33 at military retirement. Which means he joined at 13 years old. Medical retirement would not work as cop. Suspect!
There is such thing as a disability retirement for law enforcement for various federal/state/local agencies. If you are hurt in the line of duty, and it is deemed a permanent injury where you can no longer perform your duties (as in the case with the caller), you would receive a pretty decent portion, even up to 100%, of your pension as if you worked your full 20-25 years. So not "suspect" at all, just lack of knowledge on your part!

Bingo! I know at least 4 veterans that never seen combat or got injured and get paid for the rest of their lives.
Most likely he has a military disability pay and police pension from injury also. His kids have college paid for, so most likely 100% VA disability.
Right! I was doing the math as well. I'm also a veteran and it wasn't making sense. I've noticed many veterans don't like to divulge that there were medically retired. I guess they think most people don't respect that type of military retirement.

If dont need the money then go do a job thats fun. My first job was working at the movie theater and that has been my favorite job out of every one ive had. If money didnt matter, I might go back to working at one or maybe buy a small one. Theaters these days are overpriced, serve bad food and dont show the best movies. To be fair there arent too many great ones coming out these days. And yeah their chairs have gotten better but still they use that as an exuse to jack up the price.
Point is if you dont need the money, do something you love. My uncle retired at 60-70 area. He had so many health issues. The guy decided to work at a golf place. The guy loves golf. His health improved, he smiles more. I have never seen him glow so much. And its been a few years since he started and he still looks better than when I saw him in his 40-50s. Do a small job that you find fun. You will not regret it.
Time to explore areas of interest to do for free or cheap now and turn it into income and then give to non-profits. Get involved in city government. Help with youth organizations. Coach. Etc etc.
I'm 34, I've no experience.. Will I be able to get a job?
