- This is a simple walkthrough of fixing an old image from speckles and damage spots. Two plugins were used to do this, Resynthesizer (with the Heal Selection helper script), and Wavelet Decompose.

[update]
In case it was unclear, the builds of GIMP I tend to use that has these bundled are from Partha Bagchi:
www.partha.com
This is the most in depth healing video I have seen. So awesome to heal all the "colors" at the same time instead of one by painful one.
One of the best Gimp photo restore bids on RUclips, thanks 👍 used this as a basis to fix my M&Ds wedding pics that were scratched. Found technique worked with colour too if you turn up/down individual colour lightness eg Cyan, (some colours strongly show scratches others not) and then create a b&w mask with levels set to only show the scratches. Then the colour select on the white scratches.
Outstanding. You are the best instructor I have seen on RUclips. Thank you
👍
I appreciated this technique because it gives a good result and saves a lot of time, in the very messed up images.
The technique can also be used on other kinds of corrections.
Walking through using Heal Selection (Resynthesizer) and Wavelet Decompose to repair an old image sample.
GIMP of course! :)
Thanks, Patrick, I always enjoy learning new things from your tutorials!
***** hah! Let's not get nuts now. :)
I'm just the messenger...
What are the names of the plugin mentioned at the beginning of the video? Do you have a transcript of the walk through
What is the name of the preconfigured distro that includes the plug-ins?? Could not understand or find?
Walt B. Tom Brander - sorry if it wasn't clear, and I usually don't do video tutorials (I prefer textual tutorials to allow the person following to set their own pace).
The two plugins are:
Wavelet Decompose
Resynthesizer (heal selection)
The build I use of GIMP that already has these included is from Partha Bagchi:
www.partha.com
He bundles quite a few handy scripts and plugins with his package, so makes it easier to manage.
Impressive results with so little effort!
Your tutorial is awesome! Very informative and easy to follow, even for a novice like me! Do you happen to have any tips to prevent over-doing this process? I am a beginner and after using Wavelet on 2 scales, my image was much too blurry? Any tips to prevent over-doing the process? Or, any tips to narrow the process to a particular area on the photo where perhaps there are a lot of white specks very prevalent on a black area of a photo? Thanks so much!
Great tutorial! I can do so many devious thing with this new knowledge! HEHHEHEHE. 🙂
Very useful technique! Thank for the tutorial!
Very informative, thanks!
HI. I been using Gimp for few months already and got the hang of it. I was wondering what kind of plugin/filters would a person need to complete the art of photoshopping. And how do i install them. Thank you
I tried this method on a WW2 photo with landscape in the background and it shredded the fine details on the distant buildings etc. Maybe this type of photo is not appropriate for this method? I followed this tutorial to the word.
Ok so I tried using the Partha Build. It does not have the synthesizer or wave decompose. I was able to highlight all the white specks in my photo but then did not have the option to heal selection. I have downloaded the Partha build and the Gimp 2.8.16. I also do not get the scripts folder with either download to install the plugins manually. I do think your tutorial is fantastic. any direction would be greatly appreciated. I am using Windows 7 64 bit.
@Boris Pejic: He uses the Partha build which automatically themes it that way. See the bottom of the video description for details.
You'll also need to get the "Heal Selection" helper script installed. If you only installed Resynthesizer, you should find the command for it under Filters -> Map -> Resynthesize
Great tutorial :) Which GIMP theme do you use? Where can i download the theme?
Was at the site but not sure which version to download with these plugins? Gimp Standard or Gimp Experimental? Not sure what the difference is.
Awesome!
very good video. I have a problem python fu heal section dialogue box opened behind gimp worksheet, then I have to minimize the gimp to receive it. but your's appears it on the worksheet of gimp. how do I get it in front. please help me. thanks
Hi Iam again, further to my early request, I don't have WAVELVET DECOMPOSE IN GENERIC IN FILTERS IN GIMP. How do i get it.
Gimp 2.8 dont have this option(filtre>heal selection)
pls advise how can i get the option in filtre>heal selection
Thank you very much.
I put them both in. I put the script into the script folder and all of the zipped py files into the plug in folder. I shut down GIMP and reopened. Neither shows up. Thanks though. I read that I was supposed to unzip the resynthesizer and put all of the .py files. Was that right?
I'm just using the Partha build for this. Only one.
what am i missing here...?? i downloaded Partha's build GIMP 2.9.5 64-bit Standard Edition, but did not find the Heal Selection or the Synthesizer as available options...although Wavelet Decompose is there...
Me to, he did not put it in his latest build ether. But I found a working Resynthesizer for 32&64 bit gimp www.mediafire.com/file/gwc928wmwti30g3/resynth_win_32_64.zip unzip and put in the plugins folder.
good job
Are you using two versions of Gimp or just the Partha? I am afraid another build would screw me up big time since I finally seem to know where files are located in the regular GIMP
Is it enough to say Thank You? Because...thank you.
the plugin did not work for me. I followed the installateion instructions, but it does not show anywhere in the filters.
Nice tutorial ! Thx. :)
looking for Resynthesizer for ubuntu thank you
Thanks! In glad it was useful. :)
Wow...thank you
I am wondering if it is because I have my scripts and plugins in two folders. There are two paths for these in my preferences so I put files in both folders. Why are these two paths there?
This looks great but where do you find the heal selection script? I use gimp (v.2.8.16) on OSX and it's not there :(
It's a plugin that you'll need to get and install separately. You can also use G'MIC and its inpainting filter instead.
Actually I found this really cool all-in one installer for OSX -
gimp.lisanet.de/Website/News/News.html. Downloaded that and everything was there out of the box. pretty cool :-) Thanks for your vid!
Thanks for the video =)
Which plugin - wavelet decompose or heal selection (resynthesizer)?
wow great , thank you
Waw excellent :)
@Boris - some stock combination of dark and small icons I think...
Very good .. but next time please mute the lip smacking and other noises .. maybe the mic level was too high too?
PS: you didn't actually say why the same method would not work well enough on the whites .. you might have just shown what it would do, and deride the result :)
Hi I went to Partha Bagchi web site and got the gimp from there but after installing the 64 bit version, did not find the Resynthesizer installed, but the Wavelet Decompose was installed. I had some problems finding a copy of Resynthesizer that would not give me errors. But found a version with 32&64 bit versions in the zip and it works! www.mediafire.com/file/gwc928wmwti30g3/resynth_win_32_64.zip found the info here. www.gimpusers.com/forums/gimp-user/20198-windows-10-gimp-2-9-6-resynthesizer-v1-0#message89619
resynthesizer
GIMP is 2.8.22 (2017-05-11)
