    10:21 had me like "What?! Where did that come from?" as I would have never guessed there could be such a beautifully seamless piston mechanism. It goes to show that high-end Japanese pens are crafted with high-end Japanese precision. Truly astonishing! I can't think of any other piston mechanism incorporated so perfectly into the barrel of the pen.

      I said the same thing! I was just in the Pen Boutique and they had a Vermillion Emperor on display, I ogled every inch of it in the display case for at least 3 minutes where my face, almost pressed against the glass was literally no more than 7 inches from the pen. I didn't notice the line that separates the barrel from the end piece at all. This pen is a masterpiece!

    Thank you for this very well documented pen review that encouraged me to make the big jump of buying a Namiki Emperor last month in Japan. Every day since that purchase, I enjoy the wonderful feeling of precision and dynamism in writing with it. Useful to mention indeed that my handwriting is different that with my other loved nibs (MB149, Pelikan1000, Lamy2000, Waterman Edson, Pilot 845…). It’s more expressive with the nib asking for bigger mouvements and allowing some changes in pressure safely. What a joy!

    Good review! I agree with all the comments. It's impossible to find a single flaw about the Emperor Urushi. I've beening using mine (Vermilon) for a year and is the favorite in my collection. I've always been a big fan of eyedropper pens and the Emperor Urushi is probably the best - huge ink capacity, flawless ink valve execution and unmatched finish that conceals the finial nob. The pen is exquisite in workmanship, beauty, and physical presence. Despite its huge size, it writes like a normal fountain pen. The #50 nib stands out and complements the design aesthetics. My medium nib is very smooth with a minimal amount of feedback on good paper (e.g., Rhodia). Ink flow is medium wet (as most Japanese pens tend to be on the dry side required for the complexity of the Asian characters) and is suitable for any occasions. The pen has an uncanny emotional appeal revealed only to those who own and use one. It's special to hold an object that requires months of artisan labor, embodies century-long history and tradition, and commands time-tested accolades and adorations. I personally believe that the Emperor Urushi is the best fountain pen regardless of price. One may argue that there are more expensive, more elaborate, more decorative, more exclusive (limited editions), more intricate pens than the Emperor but few, if any, can provide such joy to use on a daily basis.

    Wow, thanks! I remember seeing/handling one of these at the DC Supershow....oh, must be 20 years ago. It was early in my pen hobby days and I remember noting how HUGE it was. I appreciated the two surprises in your review: first, that it will actually fit in a shirt pocket and second, that there's a turning knob on the end. I would never have guessed either!

    @shaunpearson7905 5 лет назад +2

    I got mine about the same time. I picked one up from Nibs and paid through the nose for customs, but it was worth it. I didn't realize there was usually a wait.
    I don't know what I was thinking, but I had Mottishaw grind the M nib to a cursive italic. I probably should have left such a special pen alone and a Japanese M is rather fine for such a modification. It took some practice and the line variation is ultra-subtle, but it's become a favourite writer. It dances across the page and the ink lasts forever - a deep, dark red of course! :) The vermilion is hard to describe and I look forward to it aging along with me. The size and weight combination is perfect. Thanks for your review.
    edit: I wanted to add that although I have small hands I do not in any way find this to be a large pen. I don't know why. I only notice its size when it's beside my others.

    How do you like the emperor vs the Genkai? I’ve been waffling on which to purchase and from what I’ve read (coupled with my gut feeling having owned both Yukari Royale and smaller Danitrio’s) is that the Emperor is a cut above in terms of tolerances, balance, etc. To be expected as Danitrio is far more ‘handmade’

    I have the Jinhao 9019 and looked up this pen out of curiosity since people said it’s a copy of this pen. I think it’s funny that people say this pen is huge cuz for me, the size is damn near perfect! I’m only 5’8 but I have really beefy hands for my size so the Jinhao equivalent of this is wonderful to write with, and I find small grips like the Pilot Metro kinda painful to write with and chubby pens like this are just so comfy to write with, although my Lamy 2000 is hands down the comfiest pen I’ve ever written with. Hopefully someday I can buy this pen for myself and my kids who come after me!

    • @herrkeks8509
      @herrkeks8509 Год назад

      Uhm… that Jinhao 9019 has some styling aspects of the Namiki, but it is nowhere near the size of the Urushi No. 50/Emperor. Like not at all. The Jinhao is more comparable to the Montblanc 149 in size/length that you see at 12:38. The Namiki is about that much bigger.

    • @herrkeks8509
      @herrkeks8509 Год назад

      @@kevinharrigan2727My best idea I can give you to see if the size might be something for you is (if you can’t try it in person)…
      1. Watch a comparison of the Jinhao 9019 and the X159
      2. Then see how the X159 compares to a Montblanc 149
      3. Then see how the Montblanc 149 compares to the Namiki (the 149 appears in many videos about the Namiki)
      Because you will likely not find a direct comparison between the 9019 and the Namiki.
      The X159 is close to the 149 in size, the 9019 seems a bit girthier. The Emperor is just a different size category. It is much longer and the nib is much larger than those of the others. The Namiki Yukari Royale would be closer in pen body size to the Jinhaos and the 149, but it just has a No. 20 nib (instead of the massive No. 50 nib on the Emperor), which is closer to a standard No. 6 nib. Which is smaller than the nib of the 149. There isn’t really a direct match in all terms in the Namiki line. Another noteworthy pen is the Pilot Custom Urushi, it is bigger than the 149, but has a Pilot No. 30 nib, which is comparable in size to the one of the 149.

    I can’t seem to find the FM of this pen but M is readily available and I write somewhat small. Thanks!

    Repeat performance as I've already posted these comments, so here they are, fresh out the box: Figgy, let me ask you a few questions. Like, who cares about the bloody box? Or who uses bloody pen boxes? Or how many pen fans out of a hundred revisit their bloody pen boxes over a period of ten years? Or why use valuable resources, time and effort to come out with a bloody useless and expensive box that nobody will ever use anyway in their lifetime? Comin' across, mate? I call it bloody madness and I dare say that love of waste is not my cup of tea (or glass of Scotch whiskey). Period. But the pen is really great, don't get me wrong, figgy! End of citation...

    Starting with 40 seconds of ads, without been given the option to skip them (when you are not interested), really makes it challenging to like some videos.
    I understand RUclipsrs need this income, but keep it civil, guys; a viewer may skip your whole video in the first place. So, you may be damaging yourself at the end of the day, by accepting this ads strategy!
    Just saying…

      Just an fyi that we have no control over pre-roll, non-skipable adds. Thanks for watching. Even if a video is not monetized for a creator, RUclips can still place pre-roll ads as they please.
