(writing this to help myself) so basically… cast on 74 stitches always slip first stitch and purl last first row: slip, knit, purl, knit, purl…. continue and purl last stitch second row: slip, purl, knit, purl, knit…. continue and purl last stitch continue like this for the third, fourth, fifth, and sixth. seventh row: slip, knit all, purl at end eighth row: slip, purl until end continue like this for rows 30 more rows place a stitch marker between every 8 stitches and start decreases slip, knit 6, knit 2 together, pass stitch marker, continue until end with this pattern until last 3, knit together 2, purl last do this the same but with purl continue doing this until you have 12 rows of decreasing slip two, knit together 2, remove stitch marker, and continue with purling the last. when done use a sewing needle and close the top, sew all together carefully
This helped me a bit more than the video. I tore it apart 5 times before I realized I can’t keep starting on a knit stitch after the slipknot, like she shows in the video. If you notice the first six lines she always starts slipknot then knit then purl.
Thank You.....with the video and this helps a lot.....I am a beginner with knitting and I have not been able to knit a baby hat. This helps 💜 Also a Big Thank You to Knitting for Baby for sharing this adorable hat 💜
I am currently knitting multiple of these hats as practice as I've only started knitting about a month ago and I'm going to donate them. Thanks so much for the clear explanation, because I never thought I'd be able to knit something useful and nice looking this soon!
Yes, if you were to make a hat for a smaller baby (smaller head size) you would use less stitches. BUT it really depends on the size of the baby’s head. The way to measure is to make a Swatch. The swatch will tell you how many stitches are in a certain size (inches) of the pattern. You might need to look up a video on how to use a swatch to calculate sizes.
Hi was just wondering with 2.5 needles for NB size would u know measurement it comes to before reduction round pls as in middle of making at moment lovely pattern thanks 👍💕
If I have #4 medium worsted yarn but want to make a hat for 3-6 mos, which size needles should I use and how should I adjust the overall stitch and row counts? Thank you!
How do you end up with the tail end and the working yarn on the same end when using the crochet cast on method as shown in this video? When I use this cast on method my tail end is on the opposite end from my working yarn.
Hi Sara I absolutely love your knitting videos, I couldn't knit before.. So far since my first Grandchild was born last year I have learnt from you how to knit booties mitts and I have also knitted a baby Cardigan following your so easy to follow instructions, I couldn't knit before, thank you so much for all the time and the Patience you take in making these videos your a Star, I want to make one of these baby beanie hats to match the Cardigan I made, I actually made my Grandson a Cardigan for next winter as he has so many knits so I would like to knit a 12 to 18 month beanie would I use a size 5 needle for that? Thank you in advance for any reply and for your lovely videos you have given me a skill I didn't even know I had and its so relaxing too 😊
Yes I’ll be uploading one really soon similar to this one but in the round. Here’s a link in Spanish with English subtitles ruclips.net/video/08xUO8Yvi7E/видео.html

Hi I made it for a new born baby boy and it was perfecto 👌. You are an excellent teaher.👍 Will you plz share easy patters with Two needles for children teens and adults. Thanks. with love from India.
If we have 74 cast on and the 1st stitch we slip, I am ending with the last stitch as a knit. Should we just do the last 2 stitches in the row as purl? Or do we cast on 75 stitches for the last stitch in a row to be a purl? I'm confused
Here’s what I wrote in the information box Preemie use 2mm needles with #3 yarn NB use 2.5mm needles with #3 yarn 0-3M use 3 mm needles with #3 yarn 3-6M use 4 mm needles with #3 yarn 6-9M use 4.5mm needles with #3 yarn 9-12M use 4.5mm needles with #4 yarn
Ok so for 3-6m you can use 4mm because that’s what I used for that size. For 0-3M use 3.5mm but since you said you only have 3.75mm then go ahead and use that but reduce 4-6 stitches when you cast on. Good luck.
Don’t be discouraged, I’m a beginner, but after tearing it out a couple of times, I watched the video in its entirety, and got a feel for her verbiage, and found my mistake.
I don’t know how many rows but if you look in the information box you will see how to make it in that size. The information box opens when you click the title of the video.
Repeating these 2 rows till couple stitches left is not correct it's slip 1 knit then 2 tog then slip 1 knit 5 then 2 tog . Then slip knit 4 2 tog .......then 3 etc
Well, my first attempt at making a baby hat was a failure. I haven't knit in the circular since I was about 8 years old. That's almost 70 years ago. I knit a pair of mittens then with 5 needles. My "grandma" taught me how to knit. She was German, so she taught me what I guess is the continental style. I'll try knitting with a circular needle next.
Hi Sara, thanks very much for this video. The baby I'm knitting this hat for is also called Sara :) I want to make the middle part of the hat using a knit stitch. Will that make the hat tighter overall? Also, what is the name of the stitch that you have used for the middle part? Thanks in advance!
All you do is switch out one needle at a time. Every time you finish a row, one needle will hold your yarn, the other will be empty and free of yarn. Just switch out the empty needle with a straight one and move your work to straights
I can't believe I followed along this video just to get to the end and u don't explain anything. I'm almost done with the hat. Instead of showing me what your doing you say good luck just keep doing it. See you when u only have 3 stitches left in between the pins. I couldn't be more frustrated. How about you show me how to get there instead of assuming I can do it. Im a beginner, I don't know what your doing. Or how to get there.
Just bare in mind that this is a free tutorial, she has given up her time to do this for free. There are lots of books and other tutorials for the basics or you can pay for more detailed tutorials online. Maybe try them first and then give this a go..
Not everyone have circular needles or can use them as a matter of fact so I give people the option to make them with straight needles. I have other hat tutorials where I use circular needles and I’m always asked to make another tutorial using straight needles.
YOU NEED TO EXPLAIN MORE LIKE , WHAT IS A "PEARL" AND YOU NEED TO DO IT WAY WAY SLOWER SO ACTUAL BEGINNERS LIKE MYSELF THAT HAVE NEVER DONE KNITTING BEFORE CAN ACTUALLY SEE WHAT THE HECK YOU ARE DOING. PLEASE AND THANK YOU. also no hate just advice from a beginner that has no idea what the hell they are doing :)
(writing this to help myself)
so basically…
cast on 74 stitches
always slip first stitch and purl last

second row: slip, purl, knit, purl, knit…. continue and purl last stitch
continue like this for the third, fourth, fifth, and sixth.
seventh row: slip, knit all, purl at end
eighth row: slip, purl until end
continue like this for rows 30 more rows
place a stitch marker between every 8 stitches and start decreases
slip, knit 6, knit 2 together, pass stitch marker, continue until end with this pattern until last 3, knit together 2, purl last
do this the same but with purl
continue doing this until you have 12 rows of decreasing

Hi Why do we slip the first stitch?
Do you have any tutorials for adult hats? Loved this one. Made a newborn hat and it was so easy with your instructions.
Not at the moment but will make some soon 😉. Thanks for watching 😊
do you purl two stitches aswell as knitting two stitches while decreasing the amount of stitches, or do you just do this with the knit row
how many cast on I make if i wanna knit adult size for this patern?
What if you only cast on 40 stitches? How do u do the last part of decreasing stiches
You can divide it by 10 so you only have 4 sections each 10 stitches.
Thanku ma9m
Where can I get a print out to knit along. Thanks. Sheri

How many stitches did you have on for the newborn hat please
please say the needle size, like 6,7,8. I don't know mm and have to constantly look it up.
can it be done without the counter things?
You can use safety pins.
How long does it take if you don't stop
If we have 74 cast on and the 1st stitch we slip, I am ending with the last stitch as a knit. Should we just do the last 2 stitches in the row as purl? Or do we cast on 75 stitches for the last stitch in a row to be a purl? I'm confused
Yes purl the last two stitches.

Why is there so many different cast on numbers for newborn baby hats? Just wondering..
Didn’t catch what size needles you use for smallest size
Here’s what I wrote in the information box
Preemie use 2mm needles with #3 yarn
NB use 2.5mm needles with #3 yarn
0-3M use 3 mm needles with #3 yarn
3-6M use 4 mm needles with #3 yarn
6-9M use 4.5mm needles with #3 yarn
9-12M use 4.5mm needles with #4 yarn
How many stitches do you have to end ?
I want to do newborn do you do less cast on stitches and how many rows
Just use smaller needles.
Can I make in the round using 4.0mm needles
Yes but it will be more for 3-6m size with those needles. Good luck 🍀
@@knittingforbaby Thank you
What size exactly are you trying to make?
@@knittingforbaby O-3m size and 3-6 so both. And I really appreciate your reply
Ok so for 3-6m you can use 4mm because that’s what I used for that size. For 0-3M use 3.5mm but since you said you only have 3.75mm then go ahead and use that but reduce 4-6 stitches when you cast on. Good luck.
Roughly how long does it take to make one hat?
About 1-2 hours if you don’t stop.
❤️❤️❤️
how many rows should i do for a newborn baby
It should measure about 5.5in long.
How many stitches should I cast on if I want to make the smaller 0-3 month hat?
Just go doen a needle size, and cast on 74...
If you start with 74 stitches, how do you end up with 72 stitches at the end of row 26?
I said I have 72 stitches AND 2 border stitches.
How meny stichs for a child hat of age 10 to 13 of age can you let me know❤❤❤❤❤❤ from jodie
