  • Written by Chris Wood, originally recorded with Andy Cutting on the Album "The Demo"
The tune's been popping up everywhere recently: in sessions, in discussions on melodeon.net and other RUclips videos so I thought it was about time I learnt it. Also in response to a request for more tunes on RUclips, apart from the Tune of the month/theme of the month series.
Thanks to Andy Cutting, John Kirkpatrick, Lester Bailey, Sandy Shallis and others for recording it and/or providing transcriptions and inspiration.
Played by Anahata on Oakwood D/G melodeon

Love this, and have recently learned how to play it. So many people in sessions seem to race through it, and I was recently told it 'sounds like dirge if you play it slowly" so Andy's and your version would seem to be deemed incorrect now! I KNOW there is always room for interpretation in folk music, but really, this is such a lovely tune it deserves bit of respect, and to be played in a reasonably measured way. This is lovely. And is the way I shall continue to play it myself (though not as well, OBVIOUSLY!!! ;) )

"Rushing at breakneck speed" is endemic in predominately young players who misinterpret reels, hornpipes and airs in both English and more particularly Irish traditional music in order to impress those listening...

@@seandwyer1823 I agree. Folk music is much more enjoyable when played at a moderate speed.

You really keep me busy with all sorts of tunes to inspire me and keep up with practice in my lonely DG outpost in North Scotland, thanks for taking the time to share tunes.

It's an Oakwood. From The Music Room in Cleckheaton, Yorkshire, and made by Oakwood Instruments in Leeds. Oakwood do not make melodeons any more, but they are still modifying Dino Baffetti boxes and selling them as "Dino Baffetti / Oakwood" models.

Thank you for the very nice music. Also a very nice melodeon. Do you know if there is sheet music available of this tune? It is hard fot me to play by ear, so sheet music should be very welcome.

It is not so much that the tune sounds nice,
it's the way you play it. There is just so much feeling in it!
Do you make the cords up or do you get them from somewhere?

+Samson James: Thank you! - I mentioned several other players above who have given me ideas. I was listening to them mostly to work out how the tune itself went because there seem to be a few variations and no definitive sheet music, but I must have absorbed some harmony ideas from them as well.
