Fallout 4 - Building at Starlight 06 (Boarding House, Workshop and Settler Housing)

  • This series covers the construction of my settlement at Starlight Drive In. Apart from Place Everywhere no settlement object mods were used, and only uses vanilla and DLC objects.
    In this part I finish building up the structures that surround the water pump pond. I create a small boarding house with three rooms available to rent to travellers, along with a covered workshop space. I also create a two-storey house with separate homes on the ground and first floors, along with a rooftop area which will house the settlements radio beacon and overlooks the pond.

      Lol, I quite like that weird L shaped wall but agree it can be tricky to find the right place to use it. I have managed it use it in previous builds (I seem to remember using it at Red Rocket and Zimonja), and have also used it in part 2 of this build and use it again in the next part 😁

      Thanks! Great to hear to have been enjoying the progress on the build! Thankfully have a bit more free time at the moment so have been focusing on trying to get the remaining build vids done. Got two more parts already finished, with a few more to go before I can get it decorated and ready for the final tour 😅

    Loving it so far, especially the boarding house. I usually only build cheap metal shacks for my caravan folk. When this is fully decorated I have no doubt caravans and visitors will stay a lot more comfortably in your boarding house, whiling away the post-apocalypse and enjoying the view from one of your many balconies.
    This really makes me want to try my hand again at Starlight, even though I don’t much like those big settlements.

      Thanks! Really been making progress and have almost got the build vids done, so should be able to move on to getting the place decorated and finished. I am quite pleased with my little boarding house and should hopefully look much better when it’s got some furniture in it. I must admit to not finding Starlight the most inspiring of places to build at, and it took me quite a while to get started. Of course if you do give building here a go there is nothing that says you have to use all the space.
      I image a series of small builds placed around the area, or some centred around either the pond or existing structures would also work quite well 😁

      Thanks! I like the name too and can imagine the advertising poster ‘Come relax at the Pondsprings Resort, you’ll leave refreshed and your skin will have a radioactive glow’ 🤣. I have to confess to using the wood materials a lot (all the best toys live there) so have been trying to force myself to venture into and use some the of the other tabs a bit more, to hopefully give the place a little more variety.

    I did massive build here a few years ago. I covered the entire open area with tiles, different colours to make roads. A swimming pool in the centre, two large towers either side of the projector, and a power armour display where the screen is. Probably the biggest build I’ve done. Had all sorts of accomodation and workshops around the sides. Basically a BoS R&R/ Power Armour repair/manufacturing camp.

    I really enjoy how you place and have a sense of space in your head. I went back and tore down most of my Starlight because it was back in my early days of building. In the "pond" of water a found a dead guard dog floating dead and now can't get rid of it. I had, had a circle of buses around the pond with a living area in the center. Wanted to go with the Circle of wagons from the western times. Your way is so much better than the pillar glitch. :)

    • @FiddleflapsVids
      @FiddleflapsVids  2 года назад +1

      Many thanks! I like your idea for the circle of wagons style build, and make sense that settlers would want to build around a water source. Would also be a good excuse to not have to fill the whole build space, as I imagine it would really good with empty space around it so the settlement really draws your attention. 😁

      @@FiddleflapsVids Thanks. All the big builds I'm working on are on PC. With the xbox it's just going to be bare minimum for settlements cause the main grind is going to be spent finishing out getting all the achievements. Got 19 before I started modding it so now going back to vanilla to get the rest. The only big settlement work I need to do is get one to 100% happiness. Once I get supply lines up gonna try and make that happen at Sanctuary.

    • @FiddleflapsVids
      @FiddleflapsVids  2 года назад +1

      Many thanks! I remember getting some confused comments about my use of ‘boarding house’ for my Sanctuary build, so I am glad you get what I was going for with it. It’s not really a hotel as such and more just a set of rooms travellers can use to stay overnight between trips. Unfortunately I don’t really have any major plans for the screen (and some commentors suggested leaving it as they like to use mods to project images on to it), and apart for building a small shack and some wind turbines on top plan to leave it largely untouched.
      When building I try to imagine what the settlers could realistically achieve using limited tools and materials, while also keeping the look and feel of the base games settlements. While it would be cool to build a huge structure hanging off the screen, it does not really fit with the theme I am going for with this series of builds (maybe in a future series I could do something crazy here!).
      Many thanks for the sub, I blame chicken induced food comas for you not doing it sooner 😜🤣

      @@FiddleflapsVids lol yes i too blame the chicken 😂 whatever you do with the screen i'm sure it's going to come out amazing even if it is just a little wind farm on top, that's one of the reasons i like your builds is because of your attention to realism

    • @FiddleflapsVids
      @FiddleflapsVids  2 года назад +1

      Thanks, glad you enjoyed it! Like with most things building requires practice, and the more you build the more you will improve. With each build completed I feel I manage to learn from and improve upon the last. I was inspired to try and improve my building after watching SarDeliac’s ‘building in vanilla’ streams, and they are a great resource for learning how to work with and get the best use out of the games vanilla assets without using any mods. I also feel my building style is heavily influenced by his.
      As I found the games vanilla building mechanics extremely frustrating, using the Place Everywhere mod (or one of its console alternatives if not on PC) allowed me to focus on trying to improve my building and something I recommend if you feel the same way. I also recommend starting small and slowly building up, so don’t try building a complete settlement straight away. I first started by building simple structures, then tried expanding them by adding separate rooms and floors. Using this method you’ll be able to build up a set of templates you’ll be able to use to create homes, shops and workshops in future builds.
      So, practice and most importantly have fun building - in time you will improve👍😁
