- Blue squadron and Silver Spar squadron attempt to seize two Cylon tankers on route to the planet Gamoray.
I do not know who made this, but it is an amazing reworking of the aerial combat scene. I hope that more of these will come out, and even be added to a new release of the classic 1978 series. - Развлечения
This is a pitch reel put together by Adam “Mojo” Leibowitz, a CGI artist and effects supervisor whose impressive resume includes work on Babylon 5, Serenity, Star Trek: Voyager, the 2001 restoration of Star Trek: The Motion Picture, and - appropriately enough - Moore’s Sci-Fi Channel incarnation of Battlestar Galactica.
Lebowitz created the reel around the time the Original Series restorations were happening, and he used it to pitch the idea of a similar BSG upgrade to Syfy and Universal Studios Home Entertainment.
Thank you for that information! I pinned your comment so that the original artist(whom I did not know) gets proper credit. I would LOVE to see something like this done with the original series. For the stories, I'm a purist... but even I admit the limitations of the FX work that was done at the time, as revolutionary as it was. I would definitely buy a "remastered" version of the series if one was created.
My pleasure. Here's a bit more detailed info:
- The Colonial Viper and Cylon raider models were created by Derek Smith
vfxart.blogspot.com/
- The Galactica 3D Model was made by Effects Supervisor Lee Stringer and two of his friends in their off time.
www.leestringer.com/gal_bsg01.html
- Adam Leibowitz did the layout, animation, lighting and effects work. It was all done in Lightwave.
darthmojo.wordpress.com/2009/10/08/coolest-cgi/
Sadly, Universal later decided not to do it due to the cost of reworking 22 episodes of custom FX shots - So this little clip will probably forever be one of a kind.
yeah I was about to say that was some impressive work haha
Clean lines and all
The best part of this CGI, is that they merge so effortlessly with the original effects.
@@JasonAdank No chance for a Kickstarter or IGG to show Universal there is a path with this?
Looks like I picked the wrong time to quit smoking
Oh Frack ! I didnt see your comment before i posted mine lol !!!
Good to know we are in the same squadron though :0)
God i miss this!
I still want one of those jackets.
@@DOCTOR_SONG the pilot was in “Airplane”
@@DOCTOR_SONG They used to sell those jackets in Starlog magazine back in the 80's, so I know they are out there some where.
@@JENDALL714 oh yes ive got my eye on a few different variants . i will have one,oh yes i will :0)
Lol, Looks like I picked the wrong time to stop sniffing glue.
Looks like i picked the wrong week to stop sniffin tylium !
I was siting here going "What do you mean remade?" It took me a minute to realize it was CGI - it blends so well with the original footage. Excellent job!
"Yes, yes, we could turn on the lights and escort those tankers safely down...
But that's exactly what they're expecting us to do!"
I like that the artist included a shot of the Vipers coming out of the launch tubes. Back when this show was on the air, I never knew exactly where they were supposed to be launching from. It always just showed them flying out on an angle from the landing bays.
Better than the reboot version which has someone inside launch control pressing buttons to launch the Vipers like they would on a modern day aircraft carrier. In the original series, the Vipers turbo boosted themselves out of the flight pods.
I like how you see the pilots being taken to thier vipers. That's a really nice touch and makes GALACTICA feel like a much more real ship.
Turbos, Lasers, and flight like they have Gravity in space! The 80s were awesome.
Decent remake.
This series dates from 1978 though.
But I agree on the feeling.
Um, this show is from the 1970s.
This is late 70s, right after StarWars came out, I saw these on tv as a tiny kid
The Viper pilots are pulling Gs because they are in motion. I assume the ships in the fleet have some type of artificial gravity.
@@richardlahan7068 You will still pull Gs if you change direction quickly, either in a straight line or a turn.
You will not, however, fly like a jet fighter with banks and other aerial maneuvers.
I would love to see the entire original series remastered like this and re-released. Now that would be awesome. Excellent job.
Murrell that would be awesome 👍👍👍
I agree
I loved how that was done, mixing in new effects with the original ones. It was such an awesome show.
Me too!
Very good remake. They should remaster the Original Battlestar Galactica and do more of this. Nice job...👍🏻
Nps1016
1 year ago Me too. The CGI work on the classic Cylon tankers are awesome.
Yes i love this! I despise when someone makes a "reboot" and it lacks the look, feel and sounds of the original.
If anyone ever wants to make BSG the proper way and adhere to classic continuity PLEASE INCLUDE ME IN THE CAST . I know my way around and all i ask is that I get to keep the jacket.
Really love this show deeply in my heart. :0)
I agree. I would love to see the original series remastered like this. It would be incredible.
Can we digitally remove all appearances of Boxy?
@@JS-wy6uw Nah, he grows up to be Troy in BSG 1980! Good idea on paper, but a badly executed series.
That was awesome. Way to enhance the magic of the original. Nostalgia satisfied
I love how the new effects mixed with the old ones pretty seamlessly. The original series had great effects for the 1970's, but it grew repetitive seeing the same shots over and over again over the course of the series, as their budget didn't allow the creation of many new effects each week. The tankers in this episode were repurposed effects from the first episode. I think adding new effects to compliment the old ones would have been a great way to enhance a series restoration.
True Story !
I was thinking the same thing on all those points.
All the laser fire was done by habd and with tight network deadlines corners had to be cut. My pet peeve was too many 2 hour shows.
The Best special effects by John Dykstra. A true genius for his time. This original show had millions of fans glued to their TV sets on Saturday night evenings. Lorne Greene, Dirk Bennedict, Richard Hatch, Maren Jensen, and a the cast were brilliant! Kudos to all and the directors.
I agree completely. Big fan of original BSG, Star Wars, Babylon 5. Met Dirk Benedict last year. BTW, My grandmother was born Fuselier in Eunice, LA.
This is so fantastic, Universal should update the series with these effects!
That's what this pitch reel was about. NBC-Uni was interested, but wanted Mojo to only do the pilot and the two-part episodes. Then it was cut back to only The Living Legend. Then they decided they didn't want to spend the money.
A second proposal was made by Dale Long following the restoration of the Galactica model for Gary Canavo in 2014. Universal was already deep into the 2K remaster of the series for the Blu-ray and wasn't interested.
@@dalethelander3781 A crying shame. With some of the drek they do spend money on these days....how much more proof do they need of the staying power of the original BSG?
@@Gamble661 I still want a colonial warrior uniform, blaster and helmet! 😁
Wow! This is excellent. Yeah, I agree--the original BSG should be remastered like this.
It was.
wow...looks amazing.....cylon raider...best fighter in any sci fi universe
They remastered the original Star Trek series to great success and it revitalized sales of the dvds and bluerays, totally worth doing for battlestar Galactica especially when their in talks for yet another remake...
They've got some of those new series for Star Trek that look as good or even better than the original series.
A dead cylon is a good cylon.
You have to hand it to the designers, able to make a space helmet look ancient Egyptian.
I just saw one of the "GALACTICA 1980", D Squadron helmets, that was put up for auction, by one of the 'Prop' studios.
"Forty centons to target."
"Hey Apollo, that voice sounded like Cain's."
"Commander Cain. Don't speak unless spoken to, Lieutenant... Boomer, is it? I make it a point to know the names of everyone in my command. Thirty centons to target."
"I'm not picking up any Cylons on my scanner."
"You won't find them on your scanner."
"Then how can you ---"
"I can feel them, Captain. I can feel them."
Thank you. Still won't stop me digging out the series now to confirm. Think I'll start with episode 1. :)
I like how the starship "engines" can still make turbo boost sounds (or any sounds) in the vacuum of space.
Space is so cool....
@BADSPOCK LOL! It was a joke. You're the one taking it too seriously, spock.
I was impressed with the original effects when this came out in the 70s. Had I seen this version back in the day I would've lost my mind!! How cool was this!?!?!? Bravo!!!! 😁😁
Lloyd Bridges before becoming admiral Benson. Every minute this man was on the screen was priceless..miss him ever since.
THE BEST TV SHOW of all times ❤❤
Great job! A bittersweet taste of what could have been with better CGI back then or, what could still be with enough imagination at Universal to remaster the original...or should I say any imaginations at all at Universal.
Zero dislikes because, well because... fracking Sheba!!!
Serena, Athena, Sheba, Casiopia....YMMY !
Yeah well there needs to be a Doctor Song too *hint hint*
This was SPECTACULAR!!! This is why some of the best talent isn't in Hollywood! The fans are some of best talent and can do CGI with the best of them! WELL DONE!!!
Star Wars gave us good films but BSG gave us a TV show tp watch every week with awesome effects ,Its to bad George Lucas didn't jump on board back in the 80's because it would've worked even then ,I still to this day love to watch on my dvd collection of BSG
2 years late. Sorry. Highly enjoyable! Great work. I grew up with the original show. Makes me nostalgic. Thank you. 😊
As a kid I always thought the Vipers launched out the front on the landing bay, like fighters on an aircraft carrier deck. It wasn't until years later did I realize they launched from the sides.
The camera and effects never really made it clear as to where precisely the Vipers were launched. It wasn't until much later that I realized as you did, that they came out of the sides of the flight pods.
Thank you for making this. It looks great. I really wish that they could have brought this show back when it was possible.
Love the pacing! I’ve been binge watching this over the last week. I just recently watched this episode.
This is much improved over the original.
Wow! I would happily throw money at a remake like this.
The important thing is that Battlestar Galactica is good enough to want to remaster. After seeing how deep the pilot of the modern bsg was I went back to see how much more sophisticated it was than the old one. The old one was deeper. There's meat on that bone. Tricia should play Commander Adama.
Need this for the entire series! Thank you for this!! Outstanding!
Nice work so long as BG doesn't get screwed up like Star Wars.
I love the canon sound of the old vipers. Almost sounds better then the Tie Fighters cannons.
This modern edit looks great. 🖐
That is much more dynamic, and the animation is superb A brilliant short.
Excellent video dude! I felt like a kid again!
WOW! Fantastic job!! You even got the smokey/gassy thruster exhaust spot on
👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿 Awesome! Love to hear those old sound effects merged with fresh visuals
Fantastic! Thanks for posting! If they gave the original series this full makeover treatment, I'd buy it again for sure!
Just found this. Loved it. Nice and effective re-do!
Universal really needs to watch this and hire this genius and remake all the episodes like this, at least the 1978 movie, maybe even Netflix or Amazon can make this an exclusive improve fx special, better hurry up before Disney does it for star wars, really awesome work man.
Why am I only now finding out about this?
I know right?
Same here!
Excellent remake! Really enjoyable to watch. Great job! Do more, like the entire series...I would buy it!
Just watched this like 5 minutes ago and you did a hell of a job making it better.
Please see the "pinned" comment. This is not my work, nor have I ever claimed it as such. I am simply sharing it so that other fans can see what would be possible, and hopefully get this kind of "Remaster" done to our beloved series, as was done with the original series of Star Trek.
This is how I remember the show looking years after seeing it as a kid! We 70's kids didn't know no better
That's so very well done. I wish the whole series could get that treatment. The original show reused so much footage - especially during battle scenes. It's understandable, but also a shame. Maybe, all the external shots could be redone & even scaled up to HD, during battle scenes. I remember seeing re-runs on Sci-fi channel, and you could see blocky artifacts around ships. Also, it might be nice to do something about the visible wires during space walks. I still love those episodes, and they were cool when they aired, but they are awfully hard to ignore, with adult eyes.
Thank you! Very good! Please do all the episode! Especially the first episode "Saga Of a Star World"!
Damn that was freaking amazing. Wish Universal would do and update for the series and recreate all the space battles. I would buy it right away. The new Battlestar Galactica was a good series but the original was the best, even if it feels cheese today, it was the best.
Heck yeah! I picked the right week to do my annual BSG/Gal 80 marathon👍🏾👍🏾
This looks really good. Well done!
Love this! It’s amazing the simple act of making the Vipers go faster and doing barrel rolls can have a profound difference in feel of if. The cgi makes me wish this pitch would have gotten the green light. I feel stupid admitting this but it took till the mid 2000’s to realize the Vipers launched from the tubes at an angle from the middle of the flight deck in the original show I always assumed, at that time they launched from the front of the flight pod and landed in the rear of them like an aircraft carrier today.
You know, that's exactly how I assumed the Vipers took off and landed; shooting out forwards from the nacelle-like outriggers and returning through their rear-facing openings. I wonder how much of a nuisance it would've been to bring in the Vipers, have mechanics do checks, make repairs, refuel them, then haul them to the perpendicular launch tubes and strap them in for the next sortie.
That's exactly what I thought too and I was the biggest fan as a kid. It doesn't make the slightest sense in hindsight because you can see the tube they launch from! lol.
Great job! Love to see these FX visuals updated for release of the original series!
One hell of a job on this.. and it also looks like they had the Battle in the clouds of Bespin...very cool!
Fantastic! I would love to see this whole series remastered like this!
That was totally EPIC! Wanted to see more!
Me and my dad used to watch this TV show all the time
Same here!
Fantastic job! Congratulations!
Thank you very much. This was much needed.
Wow. Outstanding job on this. As a fan of the original, this would be great to see as a remake of some kind.
Very well made. It really improves the quality of the scenes.
Fantastic work!
That's some really great work!
Nicely done. Makes you wonder how cool it would have been in the old days if they had had more money to do it this well.
Fantastic CG that meshed so well with the TOS BSG video!
This awesome. Thank you sharing it.
That was amazing. I'm a huge fan of this series and have the boxset at home, and the one thing that makes me cringe every time I see an episode is the constant reused outdated fx shots. This felt like I was seeing it for the first time. Great work!
Holy shit, this was amazing. Universal should definitely re-release the original Battlestar Galactica series with modern CGI included.
WOW!! This is REALLY damn GOOD!! THIS is the Galactica that I want to see!
Just now seeing this. Great work.
Looks like I picked a bad week to quit amphetamines. Lloyd Bridges in Airplane just a year or two after this. So good!!
Very well. Excelent work!
Very nicely done!
They should do this and release the original series on DVD, just like they updated the Star Trek TOS.
Badass!! I wish the whole series could be redone like this!!!!
The worst part of these scenes are the cockpit scenes where you see the stars moving by ... that is incredibly inaccurate in the real world. Those stars are so far away that you would not see the moving from that perspective.
It's called Dramatic Licence. If the stars stayed still. The viewer would think that the Viper wasn't moving.
@@Armadacon Exactly!
Great Job. Would love to see the best episodes of the original BSG have all its special effects remastered like this and similar to what was done with the original Star Trek series. Very well done👍🏻😃‼️
Great job, John! I loved the original series as a kid ( I was 12 in '78), and the two parter "Living Legend" was my second favorite story. Not taking away any deserved praise from Ron Moore's remake, but Glen Larson's original series doesn't get as much love as it deserves. If CBS/Paramount can remaster the original Star Trek why the hell couldn't Universal/Comcast do the same?
That was fantastic!
WOW! Now this is the Galactica I knew, loved and grew up with.
The Remade of BSG is Super cool. I remember this old 📺 show. STAR TREK the 1960 s was also redo.
Redo BSG is great 👍👍
Nicely done!
This is amazing! Good work! Original Galactica was always best!
I get chills watching the update.
Very well done!
...i was 12 when this show dropped. I was so rapt with attn. on every scene & word & ofc Starbuck was my idol & Athena was my crush, ahaha. I had Monogram models (the best kits :) of 2 Vipers & a Battlestar & 1 Cylon Raider.
Plus ofc I had a full contingent of Star Wars models & a D cell powered
Storm Trooper blaster than I dang well wish I still had!! ..where did that thing get off too? aha.
Excellent! Love it!
Love somebody to do this fx upgrade to the last starfighter!!!!!
Beautiful!
Nice work. Way to modernize it yet keep it looking nostalgic.
Awesome. Loved it.
That was awesome! It was like what they did with Star Trek TOS. I wish they would do that to the entire series, replace all the outdated special effects with all new cutting edge ones!!!
Universal was offered that twice. They're not interested. Eventually, the Blu-ray rights will be given over to low-budget operation Mill Creek or Kino Lorber.
@@dalethelander3781 Mill Creek is releasing the Ultraman series, and they look pretty good so far for a lower tier company.
Looks great. I agree they should remaster the whole series like they did with Star Trek TOS. Thanks for the video. 👍🏾✌🏾💯
This remake is better than the original
You are full of it
@@altha-rf1et Am I now? I liked THIS version because of the added special effects that just weren't available back in the late 70's. I was a kid back then so I saw this series when It was freshly made and released on ABC on Sunday nights.
