    I’m really glad you still made this video Arlo! I hope this means you’re more willing to compromise on these type of videos; scripted content was at some point the premier content on this channel, but what we’ve always loved is hearing you share your thoughts on the status of the gaming industry. If those videos come out off the cuff more, I’d personally be happy they’re still coming and that you’ve taken steps to make your workload lighter.
    Also, generally great recap on the year. Hope the holiday season isn’t too harsh on ya!

    This year my Switch was basically a Smash Ultimate machine. Lack of mental energy meant I just couldn't work myself up to playing most games, but it's so easy to hop on and play a few matches or tourneys. Ended the year with like three hundred hours of Smash, a couple of other games with ten or fifteen, and that was about it. Going to try to tackle the backlog in the new year.

It may not have had the highest highs, but it had such consistent quality with a large console exclusive released almost every month, and most of them were great. The story, characters and world do attract people to Xenoblade games, but the gameplay tends to be what drives people away. I know that in my case, the MMO-like combat in the games is really boring, and Xenoblade X was the only game in the series where exploring the world was actually fun.

      @@matthewmuir8884 Xenoblade x is the most MMO like out of the series. Whenever people say they don't like the combat it because they drop the game before the full combat system is fully introduced or they watch clips online of the first hours where the full combat system isn't unlocked yet. Xenoblade 3 also has exploration closer to X with tons of side content that feels just as good as the main story.

    • @matthewmuir8884
      @matthewmuir8884 Год назад +1

      @@metroidcypher I played all the way through X and most of the way through 1; the combat is boring at the fundamental level (at least to me). X at least had things like targeting specific limbs of monsters/skells to disable enemy attacks and stuff like that; at least some element of thought during combat. Otherwise, every fight in Xenoblade games comes down to pressing the cooldown-based abilities in the right order to maximize DPS; the moment you have the best pattern figured out, the game plays itself.
      It's especially bad in 1, where the best solution they could think of was to introduce _spike damage_ halfway through the game: they made a game where the only efficient way to damage opponents was the break-&-topple combo, and then halfway through, they flooded the game with an invisible punishment for toppling enemies. It was stupid.

    This was a very good year for Nintendo first party stuff, not perfect since the 2 sports games and the technical state of SV bring it down a bit, but other than that we had around 8 very good to excellent games of all kinds, which Is great and most of them were mainline stuff, plus the third party side was super solid, especially thanks to Square Enix. Anyone not happy with Nintendo this year could only be for having a super specific taste or only caring about Mario and Zelda.

    • @leeartlee915
      @leeartlee915 Год назад +4

      I agree with what you’re saying but didn’t this feel like the year of A and AA games? Nintendo’s “big” release was Splatoon 3 and I have a hard time believing that game pushed the developers to push the envelope. It seriously looks like Splatoon 2.5… which is kinda whack since Splatoon 2 was 1.5.
      I think I’d be more tolerant of a year like this if Nintendo stopped pushing out half baked Mario Sports games. Back on the Gamecube, heck even the N64, Mario Sports games were games I looked forward to. My friend and I STILL play Toadstole Tour until today because it really hasn’t been bested. Actually, that’s not true. World Tour was amazing but it’s locked to a handheld so multiplayer is a pain. Just imagine a world where we got all the same releases but Switch Sports and Mario Strikers were AAA efforts. Now THAT would have been a banger year. Instead we got the long troubled development game of Bayonetta 3 (which actually turned out okay but really feels like more of the same). A sequel to Xenoblade, a game that seems to have really satisfied the fans but for people who’ve been curious what else that studio can make, that seems to content to sell to a very narrow audience.
      It was a year where you can’t say Nintendo didn’t put out software but is going to be forgotten quickly. Not exactly like Nintendo during the 2000s when they had some of the best games of all time coming out each year. I don’t know, it feels like Nintendo is doing what they always do late in a successful consoles life cycle: phoning it in.

      I mean... This was a year with 3 pokemon titles, 2 multiplayer and 2 that felt like mainline titles with massive changes from previous generations... Even if both were not as visually appealing as desired and buggy they were both very ambitious. And if you think you played ALL of the content from Nintendo's biggest games this year you're either wrong or have way too much free time.... Though there were dead spots in the early year.

Just like the Wii U, people were surprised with how "so many games" they were only after the fact because they saw the full list.

    I 100% agree with your doubts about Fire Emblem Engage. Three Houses was my first Fire Emblem game and I absolutely loved it. The characters and social aspect of the game were the main reason I loved it so much, but from what we've seen in the trailers for Engage there doesn't seem to be very much character interaction. It seems like Engage will be a lot more focused on the combat, the one thing that has always made me not super interested in the Fire Emblem series. Don't get me wrong, the combat in Three Houses was perfectly fine, but I don't see myself playing a game where that is the main draw.

    • @matthewmuir8884
      @matthewmuir8884 Год назад

      I'm a big Fire Emblem fan, my favourite FE game to this day is Path of Radiance, and I agree that, while it is very important, the combat is not the main draw of an FE game.
      For me, the thing that gave me doubts about FE Engage are twofold:
      1. The first trailer said that the protagonist is a divine dragon, and yet, all we've seen of the protagonist is them being a typical sword-wielding FE protagonist. It was bad enough when Fates heavily advertised Corrin being a dragon only for it to only be relevant for 1 chapter in the game, and this is even worse: you promised a dragon protagonist; give us a dragon protagonist.
      2. Day-1 DLC. This is a big one; they announced an expansion pass for Fire Emblem Engage all the way back near the beginning of December, with wave 1 of the DLC releasing this month (the same month the base game releases) and wave 1 is pretty substantial: extra levels, an emblem of the house leaders, and an emblem of Tiki. Wave 1 of the DLC reeks of being content that was removed from the base game so they could charge extra for it, and I don't want to spend full price on a butchered game; I don't want to support anti-consumer business decisions.

      If you enjoy (and have time) RPGs, this year was incredible. But take out those titles and what are you left with? For me, if I wanted to get a couple of rounds of Splatoon in, I can boot up the edition they already released on the Switch. It’s kind of hilarious. Splatoon 2 still has a huge amount of players. I think that while the die hard fans bought the new game, there is a huge segment of Nintendo fans that were like me and said “ummm, yeah I’m not paying 60 bucks to play a game I feel like I already own”.
      I don’t know, this always happens with Nintendo. Each year seems to really do it for half the fans and lets down the other. But if Nintendo keeps to their releases schedule next year, I think they will satisfy the majority of people. So that’s my hope: 2023 will be the swan song for the Switch.

You probably didn't feel this way because you only played it briefly, but there's very little variety and barely any content. Mario Strikers 3 could have been the next big thing, it mechanically plays great. But the online multiplayer is restrictive and discourages friends from playing together by limiting team play. This did a LOT of damage in the early days. I don’t know if the game can recover from that.

      Everyone of the Mario Sports games should have been bangers. My favorite Mario sports series is the golf games and the last one, World Tour, was incredible. They literally could have just remade that game for the Switch and it would have been better than Super Rush.
      I think those games really highlight why the Switch years of Nintendo have been a really mixed bag for me. There’s been amazing titles, don’t get me wrong, but there’s also been a lot of phoning it the heck in titles as well. Mario Sports games are the lettuce that holds the sandwich together: at first seemingly unimportant but when it’s bad, it makes the whole thing fall apart. Nintendo seems to be really good at giving us AAA titles and some solid A releases…. but what the hell happened to the nice creamy middle AA games? They just don’t seem to give a crap about those being evergreen.
      There’s a reason why people still play the Mario Sports games on the Gamecube; they were quality releases. Instead, we got a sequel to Splatoon…. a game we got at launch that was honestly not all the different to the game on the Wii U. There’s a reason why people called Splatoon 2 essentially a Deluxe version of the Wii U title. Guess I’m just salty that we got that instead of a new Star Fox, F-Zero, Donkey Kong, hell I’d even take a Pushmo title at this point.
