    Ah, the HD 5450. I got the exact same model as yours for my parents' PC for use as a video decoding card (as you mentioned, it was originally intended for HTPCs), but before that, I tested this card in my own PC to see if it works. One of the games I tried was Minecraft, and it ran surprisingly well, at a very stable 30 FPS at 1080p. Granted, it was paired with a fairly modern CPU (Ryzen 3 2200G) but it was the best performance I've seen in Minecraft from an ultra budget GPU, certainly better than the absolute travesty that is the integrated G31 chipset graphics in my parents' PC.

    • @jtenorj
      @jtenorj 2 года назад

      Are you sure Minecraft was running on the HD 5450 and not the Integrated Vega 8 graphics? Because in that case the integrated graphics should be much, much faster(like several times faster, given the more efficient architecture, double the core clock speed, and several times the computational resources).

    • @jtenorj
      @jtenorj 2 года назад

      I was thinking of the 6450, which is 160 VLIW5 shaders. The 5450 is worse with only 80. That's close to 64 VLIW4 shaders, and the original GCN compute unit had roughly 50% better IPC than VLIW 4. Vega level revision should have even higher IPC(not a ton, but at least a little). So I would say the Vega 8(well, when overclocked to something like 1650 MHz) could be potentially 24 times as powerful(50%+ better due to IPC, 8x the compute units, and double or more the clock speed). I know Minecraft is fairly easy for Vega 8.

    I wonder, if like with the steam deck, if you manually cap your refresh rate to 40hz if it could smooth out any stuttering (maybe more applicable to somewhat better cards lol) . Also I think there are some other variations with better memory configuration, unless that's what this one is

    • @xBruceLee88x
      @xBruceLee88x 2 года назад +1

      @@playerroku4412 in windows you can cap the refresh rate depending on drivers, so you could set to 1280x800 @40hz for example. For some games this helps with frame "smoothness", and the reason I mentioned steam deck was that it had a 30fps cap but was still displaying 60hz. Capping refresh rate rather than frame rate forces apps, when using something like vsync, to limit to 40fps. Look at the phawx channel for more info

    Had one of these for a few years :
    Pentium E2180
    HD 5450 512MB
    2GB RAM
    250GB
    This was about 2010/11 , good times !

    bought this in 2010 solely since it could output 8ch audio over its HDMI port.
    Had it for 9 years, never let it anywhere near a game more demanding than 2D point and click adventures!
    Just last month I sold it to some guy who needed to output screen for his server build heh

      I was about to buy one(the Hd 7750) but i got an gt 730 2 gb,the reason is that in my country the people likes to scam so i get a "new" graphic card,just to discover that actually is not so "new" because the enterprise(afox) reuse chips,altleast from what i heard.

    the HD5450 is really interesting, because it supports fairly modern OpenGL and Vulkan API versions, meaning it's great for Linux/*BSD-based builds

    I do own this card (the 512MB DDR2 version to be exact) and I absolutely love it for what it is because it is amazing when used for it's intended purpose.
    -it is dirt cheap so if it breaks - whatever
    -it is old and simple, I've had instances where with a relatively modern card I don't immediately get a display output (I did own a vegy 56, then a different vega 56 and now a 980ti) and I have to reboot one or two times or I have to remove the card and plug it back in. But with the HD5450? This thing has never even once failed to immediately give me a display output no matter which system I use it in.
    Sot it is great to get a basic display output (with hdmi even) out of a system without integrated graphics and is great for troubleshooting.
    I recently upgraded my PC but kept the 980ti for the new one so the HD5450 is currently responsible for keeping my prevoius computer usable.
    And it can't even run minecraft in a playable manner.

    I still have two of them. One turned an old office machine (HP DC7900) into a Linux box, on which I play old games and well, play with Linux. The other is still in what was an XP based HTPC, but it hasn't, been used in a while. It does play old games too though, things like Civ 4... Come to think of it, I have an old 4350 too, which does a similar job.

    Oh, yeah, had one in a prebuilt pc, dumped it into another and sold that pc, and in the pc I kept replaced it with a 1gb HD5870... what had cooling issues, than I got a 1gb Club3D HD5750 passive, but felt a bit weak after the 5870.
    Than found a 4GB XFX RX460 passive, for 60€... :D That was in summer 2020... Still have it and will keep it. :)

    I have the MSI 1gb edition of this card, and as terrible as it is it serves a niche purpose for PC builders. I have it for testing motherboards and GPUs, since it'll boot and output video in just about any system. I recently used it to figure out why my new used 6700XT wasn't outputting any video since my CPU has no onboard graphics, I could just throw this in alongside the 6700 XT to find out I had a driver conflict.

    I had the 4550 which has the same number of stream processors back in 2009 and for gaming it was pretty good (put hundreds of hours on L4D through that card). Back in 2009 most people were not gaming at full HD so lower end cards were pretty capable (especially playing anything made on the source engine).

    I also have one (or I'm not sure if it's a 5450 or a mobility radeon 5430?) and I use it to test mainboard without integrated graphics, what really comes in handy especially for older cheap 4:3 monitors is the vga port, sometimes I wish newer cards also had one, but I also understand why they don't
    for this purpose though it's perfectly fine
