  • Part 3 and the final part of our trip from Germany to Italy using trains and a boat.We used the excellent information at the man at seat 61 website to plan the trip. This was the sea leg from Split to Ancona on the Eastern coast of Italy. The tickets for the night ferry cost £69 GBP (€79 euro). From Ancona we travelled north by train to spend a pleasant morning in Pesaro before catching the train to Rome in the afternoon. The Pesaro to Rome leg was picturesque in parts through the mountains.
The boat to Ancona was a basic ferry type voyage. We travelled in April and there was nothing going on in the way of entertainment. the boat leaves between 8-9pm so its a good idea to have some food then get to bed.
The food was pretty good Croatian/Italian fayre. I had a broth like soup with spaghetti bolognese as a second course. We paid for an 'outside cabin' (a window with an outside view) that included breakfast which was plentiful. There were lots of people sleeping rough on chairs an settees in the main rooms which would be a good option for budget travellers. It reminded of my days roughing with my parents when they did booze cruises across the Irish Sea!
When we got to Ancona, its a short walk to the bus stop which takes you a similar distance to the train station (just follow everyone else) It would be possible to walk to the station but we happened upon the bus an decided to get on it. (pay as you board).
The ship was operated by Jadrolinija Lines this ferry was basic but it was good value and a fun way to cross the Adriatic Sea.
    Happy travels!

My girlfriend and I are thinking of taking a trip to Rome, visiting her grandfather's hometown in Chieti and then taking the ferry from Ancona to Split. This video was really nice and very helpful! If we ever meet, I need to hear about these "booze cruises." That sounds hilarious!

Jeffrey Crace oh yes in the days when Barry Mcguigan was an Irish top boxer. The boat was like an Irish Ale House. Hope you make it to Rome, such a fab city.

Now you've got Carl Frampton but I imagine it's not the same. By the way, I just have to say that the Ring of Kerry is the most beautiful place I've ever seen. Not sure Italy can top it but I'll let you know!

There are two ferries connecting Split and Ancona: Jadrolinija’s Marko Polo (Croatian) and SNAV’s Aurelia (Italian).

@@rushirushworth Everything was fine. They had more than enough food, plenty of beds to sleep on so there was no case for emergency evacuation.

Thanks for that video. I am in Split right now and plan to take this ferry next tues. I hope to get a good space in the lounge for the night and was wonder if you know what DECK it is on? I can't find that info anywhere!! I am assuming it is one of the upper decks. Or if you remember seeing a place with some comfy bench like, sofa seats, that would be helpful. Thx

Thanks fot the comment. The lounge is on an upper deck. Towards the front there was more space to crash out. The boat was fairly quiet during our trip. Have a great trip!

Thx. Not sure how many decks the boat has. Would you say it is on the "upper most" deck or "one down" from there? From what I can find out, the lounge is one of the FEW places that has couch-like benches one could sleep (or at least rest) on. I don't have any kind of mat or blanket to sleep on the floor. Seems like if you have to spend time looking for it though, you could lose out to others who know exactly where to go. Sorry to pester and thank you for your help. I can't find anyone else who has been on the boat or knows much about it (not even the Jadrolinja staff). :)

@@nspires1 I can only remember it's on what I would call "the main deck there was an area of seats but I suspect there may have been metal handles between them which would make it difficult for horizontal sleeping. However at the front of the boat there was many people dossing around in more spacious areas I think you'll be fine if you just get on and have a look around I don't think it will be busy enough for you to lose a space. Good luck. Dont miss the sunrise!
