I have seen many a gay parade where I live in Sydney and I can tell you that its basically normal for parents to bring their kids to watch. It's aim is clearly discriminatory since it is designed to promote traditional values while suppressing untraditional ones (i.e. homosexuality).

It's like saying "Oh, I've never been told to become a thief or a drunkard, yet I became one". There is nothing to be proud of. But it's quite obvious that teaching children that drinking or theft or homosexualism is morally wrong reduces the number of thiefs, drunkards, homosexualists.
I'm not gay or lesbian. I do come from the USA. If you are going to say "Don't interfere in my country's affairs." don't. It tells me that you don't want people to criticize the discrimination suffered by gays and lesbians in Russia.
Here's a tidbit of information about Isinbayeva. Her first big international competition was at the 1998 World Youth Games, held in Moscow's Luzhniki Stadium. Boris Yeltsin was President of Russian Federation at the time.
-Extent-, meaning the effect it has on the people who have to follow it. I made no claim to be free of -assumptions-, what argument is? And I never used the word "barbarian" (..sorry if I insulted you or anyone you care about, it was not my intention.), anything akin to it would've been directed towards people who actually deserved the title. And I don't feel like "Picking and Choosing" information to misuse to come out the winner of this argument. You may now have the last word. I'm done.
Please let us reason correctly. Yelena Isimbayeva is not against gays, but just do not agree with homosexual behavior and its paradigm. It's just a way of thinking about human nature and society. No homophobia. The concept of homophobia is for anyone who is not prepared to accept criticism.
"most gays are homophobic" - I knew that! OK, I see what you mean. I am glad that you do not have any problems in your country. All the best to you and stay fine.
But by saying that gays and lesbians should not marry each other, adopt kids, etc. you are declaring that they don't deserve the same rights as heterosexuals.
Not allowing same-sex marriage isn't the same as causing them physical pain but it sends the message that same-sex couples don't have the same rights and benefits as opposite-sex couples. That is a discriminatory practice no matter how much homophobes would say otherwise.
Speaking of religious freedom in Russia I read that some years ago (in the 1990's) I think that a law was passed that required registration of religions other than Russian Orthodox, Judaism, Islam, and Buddhism in order for them to be allowed to worship in Russia. I find that discriminatory and against freedom of religion. Does anybody know the status of the law today?
Back during the cold war Leny Lopate ,then at WBAI, invited a soviet spokesman on his radio show. During the call-in segment someone asked the colonel about how gay people were treated in the USSR. As expected, he responded by saying that homosexuality didn't exist in the Soviet Union. Apparently they've made progress and now accept it's existence. However, they still don't like it.
First, Isinbayeva said she wanted to live in Monaco. Secondly, she said that she would leave Russia when she completes her athletic career because she can not develop her athletic skills further in her hometown of Volgograd, because there is no basis for such athletes as she's.
Спасибо, Братцы! I suppose all should understand for what purpose all parades. That is why it should be isolated somewhere. For example like with casino in Russia. Government create few areas where casino is legal. but on the other territory (main territory) it's prohibited. The such kind of constrain measures should be apply for homosexualism demonstrations.
I'm not talking about heartily greeting someone. I'm talking about same-sex relationship, gay sex if you will, it was ripe in Russia before Peter the Great's reforms. In fact Saint Boris was apparently gay too.
I see you might not share her opinion, but what you do here is cutting the meaning out of context! She didn't say that gays have no rights to be gays, what she says is that its traditionally different in their country, that she doesn't want to change! You're coming to OUR country with OUR laws so YOU respect it! When we visit YOUR country (which supports gay rights officially) we respect YOUR laws and do not bitch about your country overwhelmed by gays, do we?...
Having same-sex marriage doesn't remove all the homophobia. Most of us have been raised to be homophobic or at least we have always been surrounded by some homophobic people. Internalized homophobia is a big problem among LGBT people. It's sad but we can fix that for the future generations.
Elena's opinion is correct and respectful. She is wise person , which is rare among professional sportsmen ! The law is supported by majority of Russians. A Guest coming to a country should respect laws of the country. I guess, there will be exceptions for 2014 Olympic games participants which are of homosexual orientation .
Attempts to demonstrate that homosexuality is simply a matter of genes or biology have been unsuccessful. For example, among identical twins, if one twin identifies as gay, only about one in nine twin siblings will also identify as gay (Bailey, Dunne, & Martin, 2000).
If you want, read the article called 'Back to hostility: the roots of Russia's anti-gay attitudes'. It mentions among other things that since same-sex relationships were widespread in Russia in the Middle Ages and later they were condemned by the Orthodox Church. And yes, the punishment was not nearly as severe as in Europe at that time which is kinda ironic.
Could you direct me to a copy of the law on the internet, preferably in English? I think I read from your posts that the law against gay propaganda among minors is an amendment on the law against heterosexual propaganda among minors. When was that law passed and why wasn't they both in the same law initially?
Fact 1: Homosexuality is naturally occurring in the human race and many other species. Fact 2: Being homosexual does not mean you are also a paedophile, either biologically or other. Fact 3: It is not possible to 'turn' or 'make' someone gay, just as it is impossible the other way round as it is a product of your birth (see fact 1) Bearing in mind these concrete facts, can someone please explain to me what this new law is trying to avoid or solve that doesn't go against basic human rights?
Did you count how many gays are in the Russia? Let me guess, you looked through cities via google maps and identified gay people, thus counting how many gays are currently in Russia?
You say that it doesn't matter that a person is homosexual but then you say that you don't support gay rights. I interpret that to mean that you actually do care if someone is homosexual. Also, what is straight people's territory, which you don't any gay or lesbian to "assault"?
You want people to believe that Russian traditions are above criticism. I don't believe that and I think some Russians don't believe that their traditions are above criticism.
First of all, you need to understand what mean Russian. Russian - "россиянин", and doesn't matter, if you ethnic tatar, or uzbek, or russian, and you have russian citizenship, for foreigners you'll be russian anyway. Second, if you are talking about ethnic, so dagestani is not nationality, it's like turks (тюрки) for tatars, uzbeks, azeris. So, don't be stupid and open your foreign passport and look, that tatars is russian too.
The 2013 law's title states in effect that non-traditional values (i.e. homosexuality) should not be transmitted to children. That means that Russia wants to promote traditional family values. The title alone suggests that it is discriminatory.
But you said that you hate gays and lesbians. And you defend traditional marriage, culture, and morals, which in the past included the subordination of women, persecution of minorities, and attempts to impose one set of values on others. If that's what your defending then it's not worth it.
A couple decades from now, after the current climate in Russia changes, you'll have a conversation with one of your loved ones and learn how difficult this time was for them. There's a good chance your opinion will change when it becomes so personal. There have been millions of such conversations in Europe and North America over the past few decades, and that's what's led to the changes in attitude.
I totally agree with Yelena. Notice she said @ 1:09 thereabouts is that they are against PUBLICITY. But then after she says they are NOT AGAINST the choice of every single person. She then goes on to emphasize: ‘IT’S THEIR LIFE. IT’S THEIR CHOICE. IT’S THEIR FEELING.’ I just don’t seem to understand why she’s being bashed left, right and center by the Western press and the international G & L community. Maybe the latter are the real haters.
It is public, but then read the whole thread in order not to make wrong claims ;) "acknowledging that you lack the qualifications" - I base my opinion on 1) genetic studies that I have read on monozygotic twins and homosexuality and 2) my religious beliefs. While the later you can agree or not, the former is simply a fact that you have to live with. So, what is you were saing your qualification to discuss the origin of homosexuality?
Banning homosexual propaganda is a requirement of public order . The fact is that majority of R.F. people is strongly against the idea that HS relations are normal for humans. The low is more tolerant to H.S. than it's desired by people.
Personally,(& I've said it here before),I believe she had a sufficient grasp of the English language to know exactly what she was saying & her words certainly weren't misinterpreted or misunderstood.Thatcher's government introduced Section 28 banning the 'promotion' of homosexuality in schools in England which was, thankfully, repealed.Interestingly there has been no proof that young minds have been 'ruined' as a result of learning about other sexualities. But we always knew this would be so.
So your saying that those gays and lesbians in Russia should just respect a law discriminating against them, not rock the boat. Would you have told the Jews who were in Nazi Germany to respect their discriminatory laws? I certainly won't expect them to accept such laws.
When men kiss each other in Russia it doesn't exactly mean they are gays. It's a very old tradition. Unfortunately you don't see a difference between kissing people of the same sex and being homosexual
Most likely, Europeans and Americans are motivated by empathy. Although only a small minority are gay themselves, the vast majority (around 80%) know someone who is gay. Often these are close friends or family members, and they see the emotional toll societal hatred can take on them, and want to prevent it happening elsewhere. It's almost certain that someone you know and love is gay. You probably don't realize how hurtful your attitude is towards him or her.
Reading what you wrote I am assuming that gays and the majority are two different groups of people. Treaties are made by two different groups. Does that mean that gays are not part of majority society?
I basically don't agree because it is a known fact that sexual orientation (innate inborn trait, thus not changeable) doesn't determine who will get STDs and who not. STDs are spread by your own sexual behaviour or by lack of information in places where information is not brought to people. There are basically 3 sexual orientations, heterosexual, bisexual and homosexual. Most people fall in the second category (bisexual) and few people fall in the exclusively hetero and homosexual ones.
Are you in favor of genocide too. In the Bible God allowed the Israelites to smite the Canaanites, just because they were on land that God intended for the Israelites alone to occupy.
The problem is that it was a UNANIMOUS Duma decision, which include social democrats, communist and liberals. So, it's not only Putin's party that is being homophobic, it's the entire russian political spectrum.
Referring to Sodom you are referring to a fairy tale. In Ancient Greece homosexuality was generally accepted and it didn’t prevent the Greek civilization from reaching unprecedented heights in arts, science and democracy to the extent that Ancient Greece is considered the foundation of modern Western culture.
Not 'trying' to do anything, merely explaining 'homophobia' in context. And why would I want to become involved in a 'deep discussion' with someone who's ideas of something different is so firmly set? "You can do what you want...we don't care" Well clearly you DO.Enjoy your life in the Dark Ages.
She basically says she is against the public promotion of homosexuality, not against individuals who live that life.

Honestly, I don't care of any western values, I read European medias and see how well-spread anti-Russian propaganda is working there. Seems, Europe and US are still living in the times of Cold war.
Now truth about freedom of speech in Russia. I have to tell you again, that in Russia people are more free to express their opinion than anywhere in Europe. I have lived in Holland for a while, I talked to many people from different European countries, and I was impressed how much they are afraid to say about their opinion if it is different from "official" one. Yes, they can say anything about their president and government, but freedom of speech is not just about the authorities. Most of my European friends are used to repeat something what they heard on TV or read on the newspapers, they truly believe in everything what they read about. And they can't imagine that there can be other point.
Russians are more opened about any topics, they can discuss anything and are not afraid to express their opinions.

It's aim is clearly discriminatory since it is designed to promote traditional values while suppressing untraditional ones (i.e. homosexuality).
I liked her before, I love her even now!
Right words, thank you!
Правильные слова, спасибо!
всё правильно она сказала. молодец.

Glad she is a good athlete. Cuz she did not get much between the ears.
Vlad Putin Stay in your swamp of ignorance and enjoy the sanctions!
Vlad Putin Hitler enjoyed Crimea as well. He has as much right to it as you fascists do. Putin = Hitler one and the same person.
USA has the biggest warmongers and terrorists. Yours days are running out
Vlad Putin Hahaha The fascist federal russian fuckpublic now has junk status!!! Your fascist state is a big toilet. And you are a proof of it.

It's like saying "Oh, I've never been told to become a thief or a drunkard, yet I became one". There is nothing to be proud of. But it's quite obvious that teaching children that drinking or theft or homosexualism is morally wrong reduces the number of thiefs, drunkards, homosexualists.
Yes, you can totally control someone's sexual orientation by telling them not to be that way. That is totally how sexual attraction works. 🙄🙄
Yelena Isinbayeva, you are a sportswoman beautiful, sweet, correct, patriot and surprisingly wise.
Very good! This beautiful woman is a living example to the health of mankind.
My respects
BASED
I'm not gay or lesbian.
So glad to see someone else is just as bewildered by this comment as I am.
I'm done.
I live in Russia, and i can state that gay is a stigma here, not an orientation.
Please let us reason correctly. Yelena Isimbayeva is not against gays, but just do not agree with homosexual behavior and its paradigm. It's just a way of thinking about human nature and society. No homophobia. The concept of homophobia is for anyone who is not prepared to accept criticism.
Correction: It should have said "therefore", not "therefore therefore".
Well done Yelena !! Thank you so much for taking a stand against this thing!
Not allowing same-sex marriage isn't the same as causing them physical pain but it sends the message that same-sex couples don't have the same rights and benefits as opposite-sex couples. That is a discriminatory practice no matter how much homophobes would say otherwise.
"please understand you need to show respect to the majority !" We tried that in 1930's Germany and things didn't turn out so well.
Incredibly smart! ❤❤❤
The hypocrisy in your comment is palpable, but let's just ignore that. Would you care to highlight said inaccuracies?
That implied that she knew the questions about Russia's anti-gay propaganda laws in advance of her news conference and prepared a statement.
100%agreeing
How can you compare the two? Being gay isn't wrong, illegal, sinful & is consensual.Whereas paedophilia IS illegal, wrong & does not involve consent.
First, Isinbayeva said she wanted to live in Monaco. Secondly, she said that she would leave Russia when she completes her athletic career because she can not develop her athletic skills further in her hometown of Volgograd, because there is no basis for such athletes as she's.
Elena is supported by every normal Russian person.Respect to her!!!!
Fact 3: It is not possible to 'turn' or 'make' someone gay, just as it is impossible the other way round as it is a product of your birth (see fact 1)
Bearing in mind these concrete facts, can someone please explain to me what this new law is trying to avoid or solve that doesn't go against basic human rights?
Did you count how many gays are in the Russia? Let me guess, you looked through cities via google maps and identified gay people, thus counting how many gays are currently in Russia?
I simply think that gay ideology is wrong just like nazism or racism. Does not necessarily mean that I hate people who are mistaken.
It is public, but then read the whole thread in order not to make wrong claims ;)
"acknowledging that you lack the qualifications" - I base my opinion on 1) genetic studies that I have read on monozygotic twins and homosexuality and 2) my religious beliefs. While the later you can agree or not, the former is simply a fact that you have to live with. So, what is you were saing your qualification to discuss the origin of homosexuality?
She doesn't promote hatred. She's neutral towards gays. If you want everyone to like gays it's only yout choice, please don't impose it on others
Banning homosexual propaganda is a requirement of public order . The fact is that majority of R.F. people is strongly against the idea that HS relations are normal for humans. The low is more tolerant to H.S. than it's desired by people.
Nobody's trying to stop her expressing her opinion. In most peoples' opinion, what she said constitutes unadulterated bigotry.
I get her point. She is just saying that every one residing or visiting her country should respect her countries law which they should.
I think it's sad that if 2013 is the last year of Isinbayeva's pole-vaulting career it will be remembered for her support of an obvious anti-gay law.
So if something offends the majority then it shouldn't be publicized. Then it shows that they don't really believe in freedom of expression.
Its not about perversion, it is about perfectly natural homosexuality.
"You can do what you want...we don't care"
Well clearly you DO.Enjoy your life in the Dark Ages.
