Well, it was a fight extremely well handed by both of them. Not only by how strong the attacks were but how well they performed on the driving of those bots. Something refreshing from all that bs coming from rocket scientists and MIT kids that can't even get their bots running from the start. Very well done by both of them.
Yeah i think Beta's hammer broke a lot earlier than it seemed, Tombstone got a few glancing blows on the chain mechanism on the middle. 0:43 you can see it trying to fire here, but it just couldn't follow through. If they could make the wedge a little taller to protect the axe mechanism more they could probably beat tombstone. but currently, it's just a little too exposed.
Beta lost because of the rules in this season requires you to use your primary weapon so after Beta's hammer went down it can't gain damage points. I'd like to see a rematch between these two with current rules
With current criteria I'd score this Damage 4-1 Tombstone Aggression 2-1 Beta Control 2-1 Beta Giving Tombstone the win 6-5 which seems fair in my book. You could deffo make an argument for control 3-0 Beta imo tho
@@nametab6415 Aggression category refers to primary weapon usage. Beta only fired it's weapon around 3 times and it stopped working after 30s, Tombstone's horizontal spinner worked all fight and did a ton of damage. Tombstone definitely wins that category but ramming it into the wall was clever so I guess it would score 2-1 in Tombstone's favour. If Beta avoided all the damage in the last minute of the fight, it could have won.
Always felt bad for Beta here, they were able to control the action of the majority of the fight. Unfortunately Tombstone managed to get that lucky shot in which took out the hammer base of Beta. Even despite that I think it was a toss up as to who would win as Tombstone didn't really do anything else. Another reason why damage shouldn't be the most heavily weighted category. It puts anything that isn't a spinner at a disadvantage.
But that is exactly what brings in the numbers - destruction. A clean fight can be impressive, but the impact of destruction is hard to match by simple control. While the control here did have some destructive elements by making tombstone injure itself, it still didn't accomplish much because in that respect, even after taking so much, tombstone still managed to run its p-weapon & get that shot as a matter of fact which shows both good attack & defense/endurance for the bot.
it didn't even look like beta is controlling, it looked like that thing in boxing where one hugs the other so that he can't punch, except here tombstone can still punch and do damage while being hugged driving under and doing nothing else is not "controlling" in my eyes
Shame Beta didn’t win, but it didn’t back down against Tombstone even when the hammer was immobilised. Hopefully team Terrorhurtz will get in for the next season.
Beta could've won if they just used it's hammer That would've been a huge underdog upset if that were the case and if they did win against Tombstone, they would be facing Yeti which would be even mote chaotic imo Who else?
Such an awesome and iconic fight, but the fact that this wasn't a split decision shows how broken the judging criteria was back then (and kinda still is). Damage as a category is well past it's time. If you want an example of a balanced judging system, that doesn't put all the weight on spinners watch BashBots season 4.
I think that the real problem is that we don't know how each of them distributed the points. If it was an 11 points system, maybe it as: 6v5, 6v5, 6v5 for Tombstone. It would be unanimous, but still a very close win.
@@Fiddlesticks258yeah in the reboot which I presume you're referring to they emphasised aggression not damage as the most important criteria. I feel battlebots may in fact benefit from adopting the same approach.
Every time I watch Beta, they refuse to use their hammer. A lot of the time they don't use it for half the match, only to get it destroyed without even using it once. When they do use it, it's quite underwhelming and lacks power.
I think Beta should repair its hammer since the rule is favored for hitting with the primary weapon. And I also want to see more hits with hammer, not just a moving.
the fact Tombstone wins fights 99% of the times is simply because of their no-nonsense approach to design and really really clever-simple engineering. Works upside down too. Things don't have to be overdesigned. Bronco is another good example of a simple yet powerful design.
@@lordilluminati5836 the spirit of battlebots is demolition tbh, not innovation. a Walking bot never made the cut to finals, a multibot never made the cut to finals. Spinners are the mayor dmg dealer, flippers look cool but make the fight iffy cuz the opponent adds some counters and might get stuck on the floor (happend often enough and always ends in some people complaining) and then there are hammers, who i believe are the weakest kind of dmg dealers. The only innovation i see is the advancement of driving skills, which i do love to see cuz great drivers in a strong flipper bot are deadly
Beta could probably win it all. I don't think Yeti have what it takes to beat Beta. And assuming Bombshell beat Minotaur like it was, the Beta probably beat Bombshell in the final, mainly because Bombshell can't use their vertical spinner because it's damaged. But if Minotaur beat Bombshell I can see Minotaur winning
I think that's the big problem with tombstone: while the weapon is very powerful, the mobility is apparently very limited. The bot gets so often outmaneuvered and is barely able to take the initiative.
It shouldn't be about who does the most damage, but who sustained the most damage. Having these intense kinetic weapons basically destroy themselves to then just called the winner due to them if course blowing up both sides is boring. Control and skill should be more rewarding. Given in this fight tombstone did hold up well and I do agree with the overall decision, but just not the point system. Spinners are fun to watch sure, but if the rules stay like they do, doing anything else is pointless as you cannot counter them. I personally prefer technical fights.
It's a bit included in the system as cosmetic damage doesn't count, so a sturdier bot able to take more damage has an advantage in the judges' scoring. Nevertheless that point is rather small and doesn't change my opinion that you're absolutely right with your post (to which I agree).
Big tombstone fan. The problem with the way these competitions are ruled, every match with tombstone is basically tombstone vs a bot that attached a giant piece of armour to it. Yet when Hydra humiliated HUGE with a cow catcher they figured that was bad sportsmanship. Its the exact same thing. They attached a device to block the weapon because they can't defend against the weapon otherwise. Either way though, the biggest problem with battlebots right now is a lack of diversity, and with every other bot having a vertical spinner, a lot is lost in the same way that other bot shows might of had most bots being a flipper and favouring that type under the rules. They need to ammend the rules so that vertical spinners aren't so favoured by them.
@@madpsycho6 So you just said nothing there. I made a real comparison and you essentially ignored it. If its fine to attach a heavy wedge to block tombstone's bar then in what way is it bad sportsmanship to attach a device to make it so the long bar of HUGE can't reach you? Is it because the device turned HUGE into a useless joke with no pushing power or maneuverability? Tombstone is literally a heavy bar on two wheels so creating a device to stop that contact is the exact same thing. If you want to call it bad sportsmanship then be consistent.
@@beauottenbreit7992 the heavy wedge that counters tombstone will counter Rotator, Hijinx, Ribbot, Captain Shrederator and Gigabyte as well so it's not bad sportsmanship, the cow catcher was used in one of the most boring matches in robot combat history (Mr speed squared Vs Foxic had more action in it) and HUGE's following fight against Kraken showed how a anti HUGE configuration can be interesting to watch in action.
Beta tanqueo como campeón a Tombstome y aprovecho su entorno para no dejarse la fácil , si tan solo el mecánico de su martillo no estuviera tan expuesto hubiera podido ganar Aún así creo que merecía al menos u punto por control
tombstone did mayor dmg, why dont they deserve the win? Yes Beta had the better driving/control, while i wanna say pinning a bot at one place isnt really advancing the battle. But the dmg Beta caused to Tombstone was minimal at best. Since it didnt cause Tombstone to be immobilized nor stoped the spinner from working. So yeah, Tombstone destroyed more of beta than beta did to Tomstone. And since this is a battle, not a "who is the best pilot" Tombstone wins
Watch the video again? Beta did no damage to Tombstone, at least not with its primary weapon (the big hammer) which was useless in this match. Beta had the aggression and control but to no effect, other than getting its hammer chopped off...
