Jimmy Barnes, the singer you said had spent some time in a Black church, has definitely been influenced by Black gospel and soul. He named one of his daughters after Mahalia Jackson, and he has also been very influenced by the likes of Sam and Dave and Tina Turner. He actually did a duet version of Simply the Best with Tina in the early 1990s that manages to be better than the original. He and Tina go toe to toe vocally in it. It's worth checking out. 😊

Fascinating seeing your reaction to this, and glad you enjoyed it. Jimmy Barnes is an excellent singer and Cold Chisel an excellent live band. From the same tour, there is a video on RUclips called ‘When The War Is Over’: this really highlights the talent of the band doing a stripped back version of one of their popular ballad songs. Also, Jimmy’s high/restrained backing vocal really highlights the control he has over his voice and highlights his skill/talent as a vocalist. I’d highly recommend watching it - even if you don’t do a ‘react’ video of it (though would love to see your reaction to it!) Thanks for the video!

Australia has a wealth of bands and singers like this that the US just never heard of during the 70s-90s because whenever they DID go over, they were told to change to "fit" the US sensibilities. Cold chisel told the Label that brought them over for a try out to F%CK OFF and wrote a song about it called "You got Nothing I want, You got Nothing I need". Same shit happened to Sky hooks, Angels Ice house, Midnight Oil, etc. The only ones who were able to keep their "sound" were AC/DC and INXS, and INXS were only able to do so because David Bowie told the record label to back of and don't touch them or else.

You couldn't be more wrong about the upbringing and vocal "training" of lead singer, Jimmy Barnes. He grew up in an alcoholic, abusive environment which meant that in his teen years, his only refuge were the streets and the alcohol, drugs and fights he found there. That's where that voice came from. You should check out his books: "Working Class Boy" and "Working Class Man", they tell a story of thriving in spite of everything life has done to you, and what you have done to yourself.

Don't make assumptions i.e. "He definitely been around some black church folk." because you look silly when your are way off the mark. Jimmy Barnes was born in Scotland, migrated to Adelaide Australia when he was young and he has been singing this way since he joined the band at age 17. He didn't visit the USA until Cold Chisel toured briefly in 1981, eight years into the life of the band, when Jimmy was 25. He picked up his style from listening to his older brother's and sister's records, not from people singing in church (there are very few "black church folk" in Australia), though he may have heard the odd gospel song. Also the lyric you liked is "the money I've saved", not "seen".

If any one asks what's Pub Rock ...just point them in the direction of Cold Chisel.

Jimmy Barnes might be reminding you a bit of Brian Johnson from AC/DC.

It ain’t ‘pub rock’ anymore when they’re playing big venues like The Hordern Pavilion. Pubs are where they started and graduated out of. It’s not a real music genre imo. The album version is better also.
