    I'm Indonesian but have lived in Milan, italy, for many years, I agree with every point here as I've lived in many countries as well and Milan was our home base to return to. I prefer London to NY but foodwise, until today, after two years of having left Italy, I still suffer and miss the components of everything authentic Italian be it cappuccino, ice cream, and the usual pizza but also the people wearing the right outfit.

    After watching some of your videos I'm truly impressed about the amount of Italian culture passed on to the older generations of my country (Chile) such as the bidet, waiting for others before eat, put the full table, some traditional dishes, some words and expressions, and some other things you talk about in this channel. I'm myself a fourth generation-Italian (basically I just keep the surname, nothing more) and is pretty sad to see all these good traditions disappear in the new generations. I hope you'll keep doing such a nice videos :) yo have a very nice and interesting channel! Ciao!

    I discovered your channel fairly recently, and after watching a few of your videos, I immediately became a subscriber. I really enjoy your positive disposition and I admire how adventurous you are. I find your discussion about the difference in the quality of foods between Italy and the United States, as well as the big variance in customs surrounding food between Italy and the United States quite interesting. I think the simple fact that our fruits and vegetables are so lacking flavor, and the fact that people in most of the US have disassociated the act of eating with being with family, friends and a broader community goes a long way to explaining why we have a far greater problem with obesity in our country than you do in Italy.

    • @WhatashameMaryJane
      @WhatashameMaryJane  4 года назад

      Hi Drake, thanks for the nice comment. I'm very glad you like my videos, I put my hear in each one of them. Food in the US is a real problem, also because, though the comments to my videos, I've discovered that it didn't use to be like that in the past, the lack of flavor of produce is something that happened in the past few decades. This is the confirmation for me that it's not "normal", it's not about the difference in soil in America or whatever other intrinsic reason, it must be a choice of the market and that is scary.
      If you find my channel valuable I encourage you to check out my Patreon page, where I upload videos about my thoughts and my opinions on different topics.

    When I go to a restaurant, we all wait until everybody gets their food before we all start to eat. When I am invited to others' homes, it's usually a potluck of food where everybody just picks up food from the table of all the food and eats right after getting their food, unless, it's a special meal like during Thanksgiving or Christmas Eve or Christmas Day.
    Everybody I know that goes to Italy, says that foods they are allergic to like gluten, dairy, soy, and eggs, are totally acceptable to their body. Americans use a lot of chemicals for preservatives and GMO for mass production.

    My grandfather had a huge vegetable garden in Connecticut. During the summer we would feast on garden veggies including tomatoes which are nothing like you get at the store. There fairly sweet-were the seeds rigged for American taste buds as well?
    I would swing on a hammock between two cherry trees in my grandparents’ yard, a gentle summer breeze blowing in the “real” air.

      It's nice and reassuring to hear that these features are not simply "American" features, but rather the ones of the big cities or just of NY. I'd like more Americans comment on this, since I haven't visited much outside of NY, Pennsylvania, DC, Virginia and Maryland.
      Also, the A/C is a bless when temperatures go so high, even in NY in July it was so relieving! The problem is when it's on those first days when you can finally stay outside without a jacket (and you have to put it on inside the places...)

      Oh gosh...I hate saying it 😂 I’m 45. “My sweet loves” are my 3 kids ~ & husband. My name is Tara ~ I think if you click my icon you can see a recent pic? And yes, our life here is different from what you experienced. We live on a couple acres of land, I have coffee each morning on my porch swing and watch the deer graze. It’s very quiet and when it’s not hot, the windows and doors are open to fresh air. We love to grill healthy meat & veggies a lot and always wait for each other to sit, fill our plates and pray before we eat. I travel every year to NYC in September when my hubby goes to conference. I found your channel bc we’re going again and I look for offbeat ways to experience the city. I’m by myself during the day, exploring everywhere via subway and I love it. But it’s peaceful to come home 🙏🏻❤️.

      @@mysweetloves6947 Oh yes, now I saw the picture, for some reason it doesn't show on your comments though. Tara, thanks for this introduction! Your life and your home seem lovely from how you describe them! Why do you hate your age? I think 45 is the peak age for a woman, especially if she's also a mom. We're also 3 kids, I'm the youngest and the best time I remember my mom she was 45-50 and a gorgeous mature woman, with lots of experience and wisdom collected during the years, but still very much charming and attractive.
      It's interesting to hear how you discovered me...I actually haven't made much content about places to see in NYC because I feel like there are already many youtubers in the city and I imagine they make that content already. But to be honest I've visited quite a bit of unconventional places in the city and maybe I should pull off the camera more often and film during my explorations...

    Signorina Mary Jane,
    Your list of "6" I take to heart, due to the fact that I was raised in Queens New York who has been transplanted to Miami Florida. Ultimately I agree with the things you missed from home because home is where the heart wants to be. Growing up during the 1970's in New York City, family dinners where extremely important in the development of a family unit... Family dinners and gatherings even extended to loved ones who were not even blood related. However, I'm not sure it's the geographical location that differs… It has been my life experiences that it's more the "times" we live in than the “place” we live in. Unfortunately, as time races through the years, family circles shrink and are dispersed across vast distances for one reason or another. Electronic devices with the additional fuel of social media contribute to the rat races most of us live in… Nevertheless, modern advancements are a double edged sword… With these technologies we’re becoming more isolated but without them; we wouldn’t be able to enjoy your blogs.
    Thank you for your heartwarming messages and interactions with the “Dolce Vita”… Here’s to “alla famiglia”!!!
    In the meantime, thank you for your time and for flying Lufthansa Airlines…

    You should have come to Upstate NY, like Syracuse, NY (sister city to Siracusa in Sicily).
    There are MANY farms within a few minutes drive. You can get all the fresh fruit and vegetables your heart desires during the summer months. And even fresh meat and dairy.
    It's MUCH quieter here.
    It's MUCH more laid back / relaxed here.
    And you haven't met my family. They will stay in a restaurant for hours until the place closes. :)
    But we're 100% Italian (my grandparents are from the old country), so it's to be expected. :)
    We still do the sit-down family dinners,
    Oh, and I also don't like air conditioning. A LOT of Americans don't like it. Building owners & managers make it freezing for those people that are always hot. I guess they think it's easier for a cold person to get warm than it is for a warm person to get cool.
    I only use it on the hottest days and I don't make it freezing (no cooler than 74 F).

    Very true about most of US fruit and vegetables. They are picked unripe and sent to market and there is very little flavor. To get decent produce, you need to go to a farmers' market. Unfortunately, in tourist areas of major cities, farmers' markets are not convenient. I laughed when you said you don't know how Americans nourish themselves with our food. The unfortunate answer: we don't. Our country has so many people suffering from diabetes, obesity, digestive disorders and food sensitivities. Collectively, we need to slow down and eat nourishing food in the company of others.

      As far as things changing here, there are good points and bad points. I miss Sunday dinners with the whole family and we used to have a butcher and bakery in my town. Those things I miss. I do, however, appreciate the fact that I can go to a store on Sunday and it is open. I guess it is a case of "some good, some bad."
      Overall though I think we are missing out on connections and cultural nuances that we once had. I am not sure if that makes any sense.
      I actually just had someone give me a hard time because we went to get lunch together and I waited until he had his food until I started eating. I think one thing we (or myself) could learn is the importance of eating as a family, taking time to talk to each other and as you say sitting down all together. I think that is a very good trait of most Italian families? I admire and envy that. The world would be a better place if everyone took the time just to do this one small thing (in my humble opinion). Enjoyed the video by the way!

    • @WhatashameMaryJane
      @WhatashameMaryJane  4 года назад +3

      Yes, please try to incorporate that into your life, it's such a good habit both to reinforce family bond and to make your eating habits healthier. When you meet with other people to eat you are more regular with your meals (less binge eating between meals), you eat slower because you talk while you eat and you enjoy the food better, meaning that you give more importance to it because you consume it while you show affection to people you love. I'm very glad you enjoyed the video!

      @@WhatashameMaryJane I can only agree. But I feel (maybe I'm wrong) that this is perhaps a culture that is more common in Italy than perhaps Uk or America because again the importance is on spending time together as a family. I also noticed I think in the chestnut video (?) about how your country seems much more welcoming for" strangers" to invite others to join them at their house etc. It just seems a much more friendly, welcoming atmosphere towards each other. Maybe it's because your are in a smaller region but the one thing I personally think is amazing in all the videos in Italy is how good that community spirit is towards each other. Well that and the fact you enjoy good food wherever you go 🙂. Great video and thanks for replying I appreciate that!

    We have to keep the temperature colder in summer in the US, because there’s always that one individual who needs to have things really cold. I rent out the back half of my house, and we share heat and ac, and there’s always that one tenant who needs the temperature like at 68°F in the summer. I am okay with the temperature around 75°. But they will literally feel sick if you keep it warmer, whereas I can deal with the colder temperatures, I just have to wear a sweater or something. So I end up keeping it cold to satisfy them so they stop complaining. This happens in most households or at work, or in public., So we end up adjusting the temperature colder, for those few people who need it very cold.
