Reach: Green’s way of saying “If I can’t have flying, no one can!” Edit: You may want to update either the old title to state it’s outdated, or this title to state it’s the 2021 version.
I used to have a Cloud Thresher when I was a kid, and I thought it was awesome. I loved building cool flying decks like drakes and dragons, and the folks I played with also liked building around fliers, such as angels, and I always thought it was great (and it looked funky and cool, so that helped).
Nizzahon, out of curiosity can a card lose points under your system if the player was retroactively disqualified for some reason? like caught cheating or something like that?
It seems like that would be so rare and unimpactful (only 1 or 2 points) that it’s kinda not worth the time put in to check every competition for potential top 8 disqualifications prior to the event, and we would never know unless Nizza took time out of the video to tell us anyway
Cards like the Aboreal glazer show that the rarity of a card can sometimes be misjudged. Would be interesting to see which other common creatures did well in the highest forms of magic competition.
let's be honest though: with WotC's recent design choices, a green common has very good chances to be more powerful than most of white and red red rares.
Rarity of a card only really matters to your bank account, and in sealed formats. How often a card randomly shows up is a big deal. And you have to have at least a few powerful commons in draft/(some)cube/sealed. Otherwise players would basically be forced to play the best four cards per pack. No matter what the cost, or color, or what the effects of the card are. Which would remove a lot of the skill involved in deck building in those formats. And I believe it would make the people who lucked out and found synergy at even more of an advantage. Strong decks would be stronger and weak decks would be weaker. All in all. Not having powerful commons and uncommons, would literally turn those formats into playing craps. And nobody wants that.
In standard, Deadly Recluse was good because of Reach due to Thundernaw Hellkite being heavily played. Even its flavor text was meant to reference its use against dragons. But yeah, Reach is rarely good by itself. Deadly Recluse also needs Deathtouch. Can you tell I love spiders?
Well, Reach isn't far reaching. It's not used in offense. It's only used in defense against fliers. And it doesn't do anything else - defense against fliers (and a few other flier-like cards). You're going to be hard-pressed to find a renowned card where Reach is the primary focus of its accolades.
Creatures with only one ever-green ability are unlikely to see play even in standard. Imagine a 5-5 for 5 with trample or 4-4 flying creature for 4. You would definitely not play them in constructed. There are just better options. Only crazy stat-boost effect and a single keyword may change your mind, imo
Reach is a large part of what makes Elder Gargaroth so good. Really, it's a combination of everything that it does, but it wouldn't be _nearly_ as good without reach because flying aggro decks would just wreck green decks that had Gargaroth as their top end.
@@SkyBlade79 It was, when you didn't have powerful dual lands. (or mana generating creatures/artifacts.) Nowadays? Mana cost ia a fucking joke. Unless it's 5 of a single color in the cost, it means nothing to any deck.
I wonder how long it's gonna take Endurance to inevitably climb to number 1, it's already an ultra-staple in every format it's legal in, being among the top 3 most played creatures in Modern, Legacy and Vintage right now. It's also a card that greatly benefits from having reach, as it currently is one of the best creatures against Insectile Aberration//Delver of Secrets as well. I also feel that saying Arboreal Grazer has been used in "ramp decks" in Pioneer and Modern is too general and slightly incorrect, as the Grazer is only specifically played in Lotus Field combo decks in Pioneer (which don't ramp in the normal sense) and only specifically in Amulet Titan decks in Modern. Similarly, Elder Gargaroth in Modern is only used in Ponza/Gruul Midrange decks, which also aren't really dedicated ramp decks.
I've been debating building something around Gargaroth or World Breaker lately. They're both pretty incredible, but modern is moving so fast I'm not sure either card will be playable before too much longer. E Tron has found an opening, but G Tron and U Tron have been falling by the wayside. Stoneforge Mystic, Ragavan and Urza's Saga are just lightning fast, and I'm not sure if there are older cards that can handle being sideboard options to deal with it. Alpine Moon is nice for Saga, but forces you to splash red somewhere. It's a little strange seeing dorks like Noble Hierarch drop out of lists too when they double as bodies to remove Ragavan... Not that I'm complaining, but I am a little concerned how homogeneous decks will appear in the next few months vs how many decent brews pop up that combat this new and powerful meta.
Elder gargaroth, realy good one! also it makes 3/3 token or gain 3 life or let you draw a card & it´s not legendary. I would choose this is the best reach creature ever i think. not too much to hardcast it and also you could attack with it and block again to trigger his ability twice because he has vigilance. In reanimator decks is a combo with grave titan 6/6 deathtouch and when it enters or attacks create 2 2/2 zombie token. The grave titan is even harder on the battlefield but elder gagaroth is also a good choice because of his flexibility. A really good card!
I would say TOO good: like Questing Beast, a perfect example of WotC simply overpushing green and its creatures. The gargaroth in my opinion should have no right to have Vigilance (a keyword green stole from poor White) and gain life (I'd dare to say also drawing a card). A 5 CMC 6/6 reach trampler that creates 3/3s every time it attacks or block would have been close to a bomb in every other colour, but of course since it is in green WotC had to push it even further. Disclaimer: yes, I hate green (or at least what it has become in the last few years, namely the go-to good at everything best at most colour).
@@ROMANTIKILLER2 thats why i play reanimation. every new edition i watch up for better creatures as reanimation targets. elder gargaroth was one of it. i bought it from cardmarket very early, for 10-11€ now you have to pay much more for one of it. even also i just need one of these new creatures for my deck, even if they are legendary creatures. i´m sure that this card could be much more worth in future. also the double sized lands and the recovered fetch lands could be much more worth if they actually cost on cardmarket. but a green deck could hardcast him maybe in turn 2 or 3 in best case. it´s also even the cheapest reanimation target in my deck but one of the best.
