Buster does look hot in this, but so does cliff. Theyre both such talented geniuses and focused in this, making it all the more deep! Never found out the name of this wonderful song though! NObody knows it!! Hate the way they had to turn it into a comic bit. Would Love to hear then do the whole song! they were friends in real life.

I've seen "fiddle sticks" style duets on a fiddle, but never on an 8-string uke before! Cliff Edwards (ukulele uke) high scat improv was always great. Buster Keaton's baritone scat is terrific too... and I think the third doughboy pantomiming a bass with his rifle sings a few jug band style bass notes too. 3-part scat... shades of Lambert, Hendricks & Ross years later!

The guy playing his rifle is the director Ed Sedgwic, who plays Guggleheimer the cook in the film. He directed several of Keaton films including The Cameraman, Spite Marrage and the early talkies.

You Never Did That Before - Lyrics by Roy Turk, Music by Fred Ahlert
Recorded: Victor Studios Camden, NJ, July 1st 1930
Ted Weems Orchestra, Vocals: Art Jarrett
    ruclips.net/video/EhbioeysWu4/видео.html&ab_channel=TedWeems-Topic
Intro: (Not recorded by Weems, but used as a bridge)
Maybe it's for the best [Elmer] to part,
That you met a girl by chance,
You'll never really guess her heart,
At the height of your romance,
    But something in the air
Tells me that she don't care.
    Chorus:
    You're staying away,
    You never did that before.
    You're dodging me everyday
No, you never did that before.
    You left me a note
You put it beneath my door,
I've gotta go away, you wrote
No, you never did that before.
    Please, if you're through
    Then say you're through
Forget me if you choose to,
But if you're not, then say you're not,
And hold me like you used to.
    What must be will be,
And so there is hope in store.
You want to come back to me
'Cause you never did that before.

i was reading his biography. hes of small stature big on talent and genius. wrote the scripts, was acting since he was 2 and continued till his adult life...did comedy and straight roles/// He even wrote for other comedians later on although he hated it..married into hollywood royalty...then divorced and became an alcoholic. Got himself out if it..but alsas it was too late, hollywood by then was changing...Very sad...What we have passing for genius and talent is shit...He .Also built all the furniture in his mansion. Hows that for genius. The mansion was later bought over by JAMES MASON the english actor with all the furniture...he loved it.

The best thing about this clip is Buster Keaton, and I include in my estimation the lucky chap who gets to play his ukulele, who tries to steal the show with his virtuosity in voice-manner, but doesn't match Buster's eyes. Look when he looks up - O, entire oceans are born.

    • @laurenblainebamartistmgt
      @laurenblainebamartistmgt 6 лет назад +11

That was "Ukulele Ike" playing the uke with sticks. He was very well known in his day and sold 70 million records(!) and acted in films. If you listen closely to the voice of Jiminey Cricket in Pinnochio, Ike is doing the voiceover AND singing "When You Wish Upon a Star". So, in that day, it was an equal pairing.

    • @Typesticker1860
      @Typesticker1860 7 лет назад +4

The song was performed by Ted Weems Orchestra, and there is singing, an introduction which Cliff sings, and probably two verses which is standard for the period. One of which is sung on the Weems record. The music was written by Fred E. Ahlert, lyrics by Roy Turk, the ukulele arrangement was by Milt Coleman, and the version in the movie was copyrighted on the 19th of June, 1930.

When I was a kid, my grandparent's summer house had an old Victrola, and our favorite 78 was a Ukulele Ike disc called "Red Hot Momma." We played it to death. He rhymed "Zigfield Follies" with "Hot Tamales!"
He went on to do the voice of Jiminy Cricket in Disney's "Pinocchio."
