I think there are labour voters moving to reform, maybe not huge in numbers. Also although Labour seem to be on course for a large number of seats, I'm not sure it will be from a lot of votes, more like a lot of apathy from disillusioned Conservative voters. But who knows!

It wasn't top of the range, but there were and still a lot of people far worse off. I can still remember visiting my grandparents' home in Leyton - a terraced house with an outside toilet, no shower, and so on. I felt lucky when I saw their home. Starmer wouldn't recognise such places.

Convincing the mortgaged up working classes that they were middle class was one of the greatest tricks ever pulled off. Most are a month away from the workhouse, at best. If they did but realise it.
If you are working class, brought up in a working class household, even if you get a posh job you'll still be working class in many ways, in your tastes and manners, and other working class people tend to notice. And you'll be able to spot a phoney, whether it's the professional BBC "working class northerner" types, or indeed Sir Keir.

Similarly Angela Rayner's claim to being working class is based on once having had a part time job as a council care assistant. If she'd worked full time she would have lost her single parent benefits. She became a shop steward despite only having worked part time for a short period, wangled a job as a full time union official, despite having left school illiterate, married another full time union official, and has never looked back.

My maternal grandmother was appalled that my father worked nights as a maintenance electrician. She was quite posh and formerly well off. His claim to fame was that he decked the shop steward because he was harassing him for his union dues. He worked there for 50 years and never became forman, I wonder why? 🤔

Hmm. One of my grandfathers born in 1875 went to work part time at 7 down the mill. Full time there at 11. Except....it was his brother in-law's weaving mill. So he was a weaver... then he emigrated to Africa and did all sorts of things. Sadly never met him as he died in 1950 before I was born. He was 75...
