    • @ShanghaiRooster
      @ShanghaiRooster 2 дня назад +2

      You really should do some proper reading about colonialism. When the EIC established its first factories on the subcontinent. Mughal India was one of two largest economies in the world, rivalled only by Ming China. Once they had become pre-eminent after the splintering of Mughal power, initially by inserting themselves into tax collection and then later by brute conquest, the Company proceeded to asset strip, turning India from an exporter of goods to one reliant on imports from England, especially cloth. The same model was applied elsewhere by the British and by other European powers. None of this colonial expansion was done with the interests of local people at heart. The scramble for Africa in the late 19th century (under which Kenya became a British possession) was done to benefit European powers. The appalling regime in the Belgian Congo is the ultimate example, but it's true everywhere. Britain had a growing trade deficit at the time, so 'opening new markets' in Africa was attractive. Attempts to dress up such economic plundering as 'bringing civilisation' to Africa still seem to hold sway amongst many modern Brits, sad to say.
      Post-colonial India has prospered because a gradual process of indianisation was introduced into the civil service, police and army in the early years of the 20th century. The pressure for change that led to decolonisation in Africa and elsewhere from the 1960s left no properly prepared officials and local politicians in place to make a successful handover, as we have since seen across Africa.

    • @webbo9798
      @webbo9798 2 дня назад +11

      @@ShanghaiRooster You call "successful handover " the ANC - one of the most corrupt organisations in Africa. • @ShanghaiRooster
      @ShanghaiRooster 2 дня назад +1

      @@webbo9798 Why do you claim I said the ANC government was a successful handover when I said nothing of the sort. Simon mentioned the so-called 'bantustans' during the video. I suggest you read up about their history before coming out with your total nonsense. Although there were a handful of exceptions, eg, Bophuthatswana which benefited from having platinum and other minerals on its territory (and the infamous Sun City casino), most of these supposedly independent states were akin to the reservations native americans were confined to during the 19th century; poor land, little or no amenities and all the rest. Small wonder that corruption in the leadership became endemic, and after the end of apartheid simply moved to the larger stage.

    • @Charlie-oj4wj

      @@ShanghaiRooster Are you under the impression that Africa was a total paradise before colonisation and the corruption, greed and wickedness of African governments is Europe's fault ? • @oliverpearson1577
      @oliverpearson1577 2 дня назад +3

      @@ShanghaiRooster I don't think anyone denies there was economic plundering. All colonising and conquering nations are guilty of that throughout history. But it is ridiculous to suggest that the colonised countries did not or have not benefitted massively. Modernity did not evolve in those colonised nations - it was introduced. I would include ancient Briton in that summary too, thanks largely to Roman colonisation.

      Next Comprehensive education, can never work, because Middle Class children inherit genes for superior intelligence from their Middle Class parents, that's why they're middle class.

    Demographic factors obviously are a factor but I can't help but think in 20 years time all the same problems will happen as we have seen in UK for example. Pre Industrial Revolution 73% of children didn’t make it to adulthood and average peasant life expectancy in England was 35.

    I’ve lived in Africa, there is no doubt in my mind that they need Europeans to help manage their country, it’s not racist, it just seems to be a cultural fact that unfortunately they are unable to keep a country stable. Colonialism is made out to be this terrible thing, when actually, it gave African countries a great starting point to build on, unfortunately when they got their independence, it all went downhill from there, and here we are another country with all the natural resources that they need to make it successful country and extremely rich country, but it’s now Declining into anarchy. it is a very sad thing to see happen, because Africa is an amazing continent, and if they could just manage their countries correctly and keep crime down to a minimum, they would make billions a year from tourism alone. There are many decent African people that I know personally, that hate the way their country is being destroyed and would welcome help from Europeans to get it back on track and keep it that way. It’s not racist to want to help a country flourish and in turn make it a good place to live for the good, decent people who live there and not let it descend into chaos and allow criminals to take over.

Is this why the blatant sabotage by Europe to block infrastructure is so rife, china has created more infrastructure in 20 years than Europe has in 400 years😂 is this why foreign policy is so cruel and unfair, forced Bank loans etc et etc etc etc 😂 is this why without the Free resources Western Europe will crash ? I read a book called Why Nations Fail. It said Botswana was an African country that was doing alright, with a corruption index and standard of living similar to the Czech Republic. Other than Botswana none of the African countries were doing great. The authors blamed the legacy of colonialism in part. He said the colonialists set up marketing boards, which were extractive. When the colonialists left the new elite took over the marketing boards. The authors said the main reason nations fail is basically nepotism and corruption. The elites know what they have to do to improve living standards for their people, but it would mean them losing power. The American Dream was that anybody from any background could become rich and successful by talent, drive and being prepared to take risks. The courts would stop vested interests from blocking them. In many countries a young entrepreneur with a new business might threaten the interests of a supporter of the ruler. The ruler's own position may not be very legitimate and he depends on his supporters for power. Thus the entrepreneur gets closed down.

    • @robm8809
      @robm8809 2 дня назад +1

      Your point about the elites knowing what they have to do to improve the lives of the people, but doing so means giving up their own power is true everywhere. It's certainly true here where the political class prevents ordinary people getting involved and having any real influence over matters.
