Today we’re dissecting Connery’s infamous hot takes on his successors, especially singling out Moore for turning Bond into an overblown parody. We’ll cover their alleged feud, despite mutual respect behind the scenes. From box office showdowns to their radically different acting styles, we break down how Connery and Moore diverged in their legendary Bond portrayals and why Connery Shade still gets thrown decades later!
Was Moore’s humorous charm offensive to Connery’s stoic purist vision? Did producers sacrifice integrity to keep Bond trendy in the '70s and '80s? We’re revisiting that scathing archival interview where Connery clowned his buddy Moore before providing essential context on their friendship, including closely coordinating their comebacks in 1983's dueling Bond blockbusters Octopussy and Never Say Never Again.
Beyond Bond, we trace Moore and Connery's early careers, breakout opportunities defining them as icons and their enduring legacies as two definitive actors representing how 007 stays timeless. Connery set the tone, but could Bond thrive if he only quipped smugly and judo chopped villains? Would Moore’s effortless wit eventually turn the franchise into an SNL parody? Together they balanced each other out before passing the torch.
Relive all the drama, laughs and legacy as we analyze Sean Connery’s notorious beef with Roger Moore’s lighter interpretation of Bond while celebrating how their passion and talent preemptively shut down anyone dismissing Bond as expired. Their rich friendship behind the scenes shows how even when you shade your friend, it comes from love!
So get in on the rivalry, choose your fighter and decide whether you’re on Team Connery or Team Roger! It’s the Battle of the Bonds up for debate as we revisit why Sean Connery threw eternal shade at Roger Moore’s Bond makeover! Stick around for this deep dive into a beef that reminds why nobody does Bond better than JB himself. The name’s Bond - James Bond!

Initially Moore was my favorite but the more I watched Connery's films, he became the #1 Bond for me. By the time he took on the role, the films just lost their fun factor and charm for me.

In order to choose who is the best Bond, one needs to read Ian Fleming’s novels. The character in his novels portrays Bond as rather cold and calculated. Therefore the choice is easy, Connery. Roger Moore, although a good actor, brought humor into the character which took away from Fleming’s Bond. Perhaps Moore might have won from an audience’s point of view who were not familiar with Fleming’s Bond. I also think that Danial Craig comes into a close second. Heaven knows who will be the next Bond. As a true fan of 007, I can only hope that he follows in the footsteps of Connery and Craig.

Ah, but he did. Almost. At the end of the book of "From Russia With Love", Rosa Klebb kicked him with a poison-laden needle sticking out of her shoe. Bond collapses on the floor, watching Rene Mathis starting towards him. As I understand things at the time, the books were not doing particularly well and Fleming decided to end the series. Then he had a change of heart (maybe when the books got a boost when President Kennedy said he read the books, or maybe the movies started taking off), so Fleming whipped up a soap-opera-ish, last minute save by Mathis, presumably.

To me the best portrayal ofJames Bond (using the books as the reference) was Timothy Dalton, the only one that made Bond look stressed and afraid on a regular basis.
Craig became a close second, but he didn't quite look like Book Bond, so the crown goes to Dalton.
The worst was, without a doubt, Lazenbi, but that could be considered au concour (sp?).
The second worst would be a tie between Moore and Pierce Brosnan - that is, without a doubt, an excellent actor - I blame the scripts.

Sean Connery’s Bond was the original (although Ian Fleming didn’t care for him). He was a man of taste(food, fashion, spirits and women). He has a knowledge of weapons and can fly a plane or helicopter.
Roger Moore’s Bond was charm , sophistication and humor. Moore stated that he saw James Bond as a superhero and a clown, which helped him become endearing to Bond fans.
George Lazenby’s Bond had the distinction of being the only Bond to fall in love and get married, only to lose his wife to SPECTRE, thus giving Bond a driving motivation for revenge.
I think deciding which actor is the best one to play James Bond is an exhausting proposition, if it can be approached objectively. Each actor brought something different and unique to the role because James Bond is the hero of these stories written by Ian Fleming.

  • @knightterror2826

I'm personally not a fan of Moore's slapdash and fanciful approach to playing Bond, but I recognize that Bond himself is a character that can be appreciated through various lenses of tone and style. If the producers had attempted to make Roger replicate Connery's performance instead of doing his own take on the character the franchise likely would have floundered and died, because only Connery can play Bond like Connery. So I respect Roger's tenure as Bond for keeping interest in the franchise alive, which eventually afforded us Dalton, Brosnan and Craig, who were all brilliant in their own unique method and styles.

  • @MrBarrystuart

Great video, thanks for posting! Moreover, I too believe that Sean Connery is definitely the best James Bond. However, I also believe that Sean's critique of Roger Moore's portrayal is a bit misplaced and also a bit unfair. As I heard the story, the producers of the franchise, namely Cubby Broccoli decided that the worst mistake they could possibly make would be to have the new replacement (Roger Moore) attempt to play the character in the same way that Sean had.
They understood that Sean had basically created and breathed life into the film version of the character, and as such, it would be extremely difficult to replace him - especially as international audiences had already embraced him as the true James Bond. So, replacing the actor would also mean replacing the character of James Bond with a uniquely different version, while also maintaining the core elements of the character himself.
So, we can clearly see that Roger Moore definite had a daunting challenge ahead of him. He had to create and present a brand-new version, while also maintaining the character of James Bond - and hopefully, not alienate audiences and fans. Cubby made him understand just how important all of this was to achieve ongoing success with the franchise, so there was definitely a lot on the line. Consequently, I believe that Roger's version was quite successful in achieving all of these goals.
My personal belief is that he probably borrowed heavily on his former character of Simon Templar (The Saint). Both characters share a lot of similarities and are definitely enigmatic figures. Also, Simon Templar's character exhibited a lot of wit and charm, not to mention humor, and he could also be quite disarming as a protagonist - all of which I believe Roger rolled into the persona of his version of James Bond. Thanks again for sharing!

It's not fair to criticize Moore's approach without taking into account the tone of the Bond films he starred in. Connery himself said that Moore was the best fit for the kind of movies the Bond franchise had become. In fact, it was this change in tone that caused Connery to leave the franchise in the first place ( aside from type-casting fears ).

A great Bond who was deserved by not so great scripts. Craig is fourth. He could have been higher. His performance in Skyfall was stellar. But it’s hard for me to forgive what he pushed for in his last movie. He had too much power and didn’t used it as effectively as Dalton, who had the perfect balance and didn’t made the serie around around himself. Then Lazenby. The one time Bond wasn’t bad in the role and had an amazing movie. Too bad he only made one and so didn’t grow as an actor in the role. One or two more film, and he would have been awesome instead of having to leave in Sean Connery’s shadow. (And DAF wouldn’t have been such a trainwreck). Moor would be last, for me. And for Heaven’s sake, the man’s name is pronounced LAY-zen-bee!
In promoting “Never Say Never Again” (an excellent film), Connery was asked about Moore’s approach. All he said, basically, was that it was a different style for a different audience. He didn’t blast Moore, and even told an amusing story about meeting him in London in 1982. Moore asked Connery, where are you off to now? Connery replied, Bahamas, then the south of France. Connery posed the same question; Moore replied, with less enthusiasm, India!

A lot of the negative comments about Moore's acting came from himself and I think critics decided to latch onto that, even lewis Gilbert director of the spy who loved me said Moore was a much better actor than he gave himself credit for, Lazenby while great in the action scenes and the final scene where Tracey dies, he was awful in the rest of the film with some really god awful wooden delivery, at least Moore knew to change his tone of voice or facial expression when a scene called for it.

What I really don't understand, is when Sean Connery retired from the role, why they didn't just ask his younger brother "Neil Connery" to play Bond. I understand that Sean and Cubby Broccoli had a falling out, and I'm sure that Sean told Neil about it, but it wouldn't be betraying Sean if Neil would've auditioned for the role. He had to think about his career as well.
    * I don't think Sean would've considered it betrayal. All he would've probably said to Neil is "Don't say I didn't warn you." I mean, think about it. Neil was already an established actor by 1967(even though his acting debut wasn't released until 5 months after "You Only Live Twice"). Neil also looked like Sean Connery's twin. All he would've had to do, is shave his beard and mustache. His acting debut also just happened to be a spy movie. In that movie he acted alongside "Daniela Bianchi"("Tatiana Romanova", the Bond girl in "From Russia with Love").
    * Also, in Neil's first film, he acted with "Adolfo Celi"("Emilio Largo", the main villain in "Thunderball"), Bernard Lee(the first actor to play "M"), Lois Maxwell(first actor to play "Ms. Moneypenny") and Anthony Dawson(played Prof. Dent in "Dr. No"). It was even said that he played the role of James Bond in the movie called "Mad Mission 3: Our Man from Bond Street"("Aces Go Places 3" or "Mad Mission III"), but that turned out to be a false rumor. The role was actually played by "Jean Mersant" in that film.
    * Neil looked almost exactly like Sean Connery(only, perhaps a little younger). Neil would've been 28 years old in 1967. Sean Connery was 37. I think that Neil would've been willing to play the role of Bond for the next 22 years. This means he would've played Bond in "On Her Majesty's Secret Service", all the way to "Licence to Kill". It would also mean that he would've held the record for the number of Bond films he starred in, which would be "11"(which is also a lucky number). I don't know. I think that would've been pretty cool. I don't know why they didn't even so much as ask him if he'd like to play the role, and I have no idea why Neil would've turned the role down. It would not have been betrayal. It's called an acting career. You couldn't hold that against him.

Our critical look should be at what we have been forced to endure such as invisible cars, a Bond theme song sung by a man in falsetto; of late, some very homely bond girls, and soundtracks meant to make a name for the composer instead of staying in keeping with James Bond music. Even a Bond bad guy or two have been unbelievable.... this should be our focus to improve upon future films and thus our enjoyment of the adventures of fictional characters in the James Bond series.

Connery is a beast of a man, Roger is slight. That's the point. The "real" Bond is really of course an ego projection of Flemming (Eton-educated MI6 naval intelligence officer) and Flemming loved Roger for the role as it was more like him or at least as his fantasy version of him. But you can see Roger is not a fighter, every fight he wins he has to innovate. Hell he kinda struggles against girls. Connery? He's more like the Seals/SBS, a one-man special-forces hit-team.

I first became aware of James Bond as a kid in the 1970's as the Roger Moore movies came to TV. It was years before I even heard of Sean Connery, but once I finally saw the early Bond films these are now my favorites, especially 'Dr. No' for its reliance more on story plot and action, and less on gadgets. About 'On Her Majesty's Secret Service' I have very mixed feelings. Diana Ring - YES! Telly Savalas - yeah, OK. And American James Bond - NO! And Lazenby's antics after filming didn't help. James Bond pretending to be gay - aw hellz naw! Overall I don't generally watch it. In spite of Sean Connery 'Never Say Never Again' is a bad remake of 'Thunderball'. I'll just watch 'Thunderball', thank you. 'Moonraker' - awful! The series picked up somewhat with Timothy Dalton. I really liked Pierce Brosnan as James Bond, it was overdue, but the movies - not so much. With Daniel Craig they rebooted, and I liked Craig's portrayal of the character.

Younger viewers were coming along. I also like Sean Connery as James Bond. Sean was a rough around the edges Scotsman while Roger was an elegant Englishman. They both made the franchise suitable for them and the audiences. George Lazenby? The worst miscasting in cinema history.

So who was the worst actor to play James Bond? wasn't I paying enough attention because I seem to have missed something there. Still on the subject of Bond, considering how good On Her Majesty's Secret Service was I wish George Lazenby had done Diamonds Are Forever, had he done so the Bond franchise might have led to a grittier more serious direction and Roger might never have become Bond. No disrespect to Roger but his Bond was too campy, but there are those who think his Bond is the best. I also wish Timothy Dalton had done another two or more Bond films with his gritty take on the character, he was as good as Sean if not better. I don't think defining the best Bond is a generation thing, I was born in 1959 so you'd expect Sean Connery to be my favourite Bond, but no, as I said above Dalton's Bond was as good if not better than Connery, Daniel Craig's Bond was as good if not better than Dalton's. Perhaps it could be defined by my favourite Bond film countdown of each actor to play the part. So from 6 to 1, The World Is Not Enough, For Your Eyes Only, On Her Majesty's Secret Service, From Russia With Love, Casino Royale. and No1 The Living Daylights. Now, sooner than kill Bond off in No Time To Die, I'd have preferred he had a happy ending with Madeleine Swann at the end of Spectre, that's what Bond deserved, not to be bumped off, but now Bond is dead perhaps he should stay so, because if the franchise is re-booted what will we get? A WOKE James Bond? That's what worries me because instead of making films for the life long fans of such franchises the directors and producers these days seem to disrespect them and pander to the easily offended WOKE audiences of today. A WOKE James Bond... No! No! No!

I don’t remember Sean saying who was the “worst” Bond. He did say there was less emphasis on the character, and more on the effects/ hardware/ gadgets , but this was a movement the franchise took , rather than the actors’ fault, notably , Sir Roger Moore itself. One thing is that both Sean and Roger brought “ presence and authority “ to the character, their voices having authority as you would expect as a Commander in the Royal Navy. I found Timothy Dalton brought a grittier Bond back to the role but was very quiet in his voice tone , it somehow lacked the authority the previous actors had. Pierce seemed to revert to the Roger Moore type of Bond , but was very “boyish” a almost too youthful Bond. He left because he knew the franchise was taking the character in a different direction, which brings me on to Daniel. Daniel has less hardware and played the part as a darker Bond , taking into account Bond lost both parents at a young age, that fits well. However, Bond was left with private school upper class values a good taste of wine , women , and a higher class of style. Daniel Craig presents a UK Bourne Identity . The upper class Bond has gone. He is foot soldier commando rather than a Commander of the Royal Navy. I’ve enjoyed all the Bond films , all actors brought something to the role . I particularly enjoyed OHMSS with George Lazenby as it followed the book closely , more so than later films, it would have been interesting to see how the role progressed with George , had he decided to stay with it. That said , Sean still to me sets the template for how Bond would have been , something the franchise needs to look at very closely rather than pandering to social wokeyness and inventing a totally different personal to the character.
