- In this video I try out 3 DIY tire insert alternatives for the SCX24. I fill my tires with metal wire, BB's, and water and compare them to a traditional foam setup. The results were entertaining and informative! Watch on to see which one performed best!

Great comparisson, we need more of these fundamental test, maybe get a FlubRC Slimeballz insert next for the same wheel/tyre combo on that car to have a direct comparisson.
comparison
Given how the BB's stay at the bottom of the tire, I really like the idea. Probably need a few less. Too many can make them bunch up and get stuck. Small funnel would help putting them in.
Dang it wish I would’ve known this 2 days ago. I just got done building my 3 piece wheels for my SXC24 and man was it a headache lol don’t want to take them apart again 😂😂
But do they look cool? Yes. Just buy a set of cheaper wheels to do this with. And keep the cool wheels for lighter wheeling.
This is spooky because literally I was just talking about some of these techniques yesterday and I believe I have never heard of it seen anyone do this. But like they say if you thought of it, you're already too late. I'm very new to the rc scene and was gifted an accent 18. I have 2 very intense crawler and FPV drone buddies that have done a lot of printed crawler bodies, adjusted suspension tensions, tire inserts but I mentioned water and ball bearings (not bbs) yesterday for super low center of gravity. You can't get much lower than the bottom half of a tire. Many people don't know that large equipment tires are filled with a mixed water to give them mega traction. Super flukey timing with your video. Really appreciate your videos and indepth no drama. I was wondering if you "immersed" the tire in bbs of the amount would give the tire more structure (and weight obviously) and not roll so much.
The water was surprising , I use copper wire and foams and it definitely crawls better than stock setup😊
FYI: Solder coils would be much easier to do and more grams/inch. And if you can and want to go all out, hit a Stained Glass supply shop. They'll have solder that's thick like you're steel wire. Thicker gets you max weight with a single row of coils. If you try to do layers on top of each other, it gets messy and difficult to get even.
I used 12 gauge copper wire on 3 different builds. A Tarantula with 1.3 wheels, a Micro Capra/Injora Rock Buggy with 1.3's and an AX24 with 1.0's. The wire adds ~3 grams per coil and am able to fit 7 coils. Only doing it to the front adds 21 grams per wheel. Drilling a hole in the PVC helps with getting a tight wind on the wire. Like you, I left the foam in. If you use a PVC size just smaller than the ring it will also help keeping it tight. I should probably do a video on how I do it. But the RC videos aren't getting many views or traffic to my channel.
I think you're getting close to needing a new indoor course pal. :D Maybe go 'Reactive Terrain' build method. Much better method than foam for sure.
Great vid Adam! Thanks!!!
I have been thinking about using the bbs. Seems you could weigh it “dry” then add as needed to dial weight bias.
I run BBs on my deadbolt. They need to be counted, I’ve got 45 up front and 20 in the rear. The deadbolt is pretty much stock ( aluminum links, steel rims and upgraded servo).
you can get thick lead soldering wir to wrap around the spacer
People use to do this stuff back at the start of rc crawling when they had to make crawlers by scratch
When using the BBs I usually add 20-25 in the fronts and 15-20 in the rear (bigger tire = more BBs. One thing I also do when using BBs is I cut my foams in half so they still fit snug around the ring but they don’t fill the tires so the BBs can always flow to the contact point of the tire.
Well done. Cool experiment & comparison.
I’ve had a few people make fun of me for putting BBs in my crawler tires, just being total supremacist tools, and then I completely out-crawl them when they’ve spent $100+ on brass inserts. With the right tires, BBs make impossible lines just plausible enough.
I think some bbs along with water filled would be the overall winner, extra weight and the comformity of the water would be a winner!
When using bb. Weigh em up for balance.👍
Cool comparison
What if you try less BB's ... Measure , weigh, or count out the BB's so that they weigh the same in each tire and also the same as the water did. Then try it again. Logically, if you put too many BB's in each tire, and it's too heavy, it can't go up a hill. So it makes me think if you do the same weight with water vs BB's what would crawl better. What is cool about the BB's is you can control the weight to fit your obstacle corse. Thanks for the video.
Have you ever ran the 64mm injora rock terran just installed them on my build and I am very impressed . I was wondering what is your best tire for a crawler and how to comp pins work
Just watched the soap paint vid and then you sneak in another vid! Laying in bed, Cardi B snoring next to me with her head taking most of the pillow, coffee and another Cape vid. That's a good Sunday morning!
Thanks for all of the effort, it was very entertaining. I'm gonna stick with Injora Silicone and brass;-)
I'm sure it's been said but for the BBS my general rule was if they don't roll freely without the rim then you need to take some out, and same general idea for the water,
Don't fill it all the way try only fill the tire to 1/4 or 1/2 full that way the weight stays down low in the bottom half of the tire you'll notice your sidewall will improve tremendously,
if you take a peek at 1/10 comp chassis they generally have a brass mount by the hubs to attach brass weights but with how its designed it's able to sit on the bottom, left or right side of the axle or all 3 and just make it really heavy on all 3 sides
I would love to see what you do with a power wagon. I've spent so much time getting mine to perform. I think if could do mini moab now. You can see how terrible it is stock on any sort of incline, it just rolls right over.
I'm on a mission to see what it can do now!
@@CapeCrawlers if you do your usual work I think you'll be impressed with how well it improves with some attention
Hey Adam great video would love to see you try putting water in the front tires of some of your comp builds 🤙
I think Lite Brite did something similar with their 1:1 rigs...was very interesting to full tires with water. 🤔
😅tripod action! I'm steeling that line Adam👍🤠👍
Awesome video Adam 😁 Love the content
With the bb’s had it on my old ridgerock and we got a kitchen scale and a I little cup and put the bb’s in the cup so we could have the same grams in each wheel
or you could just count them
I use bbs in my c10 that is a very light aluminum truck and that helps a ton. I tried bbs in my gladiator that is mostly brass with RCAWD portals and it didn’t like it very much with that. The bbs work better on lighter trucks
fyi i have seen hair scrunchies and hair buns used in RC tires, so may be worth a try
I did the bb's to my smasher v2 a couple of weeks ago , only adding 24 grams to the front tires as I didn't know how much would be too much. It made a big difference. I have 2 smasher v2's , one for the wife. I also put the spools in , that's all I've done. Looking at getting a set of injora 70mm cling on 1.3 tires and there brass wheels. Looking for a suggestion on these tires or something better. Trying to make the smasher a crawler even though it's not. Thx for the comparison test. I guess I'm not the only one doing the bb trick.
Boy, water tires were a surprise! Nice out of the box thinking! Love these kind of tests! I wonder how a thick oil like fluid would work? Or Non-Newtonian fluid?
try soaking the foam inserts through a "water puddle" i hear you do that then go first in the comp and get the track all wet for your homies behind you :P all the while getting better grip than some stock foams
It's funny you make this video because just the other day my buddy (who works with binding jet printers and isn't into RCs) and I were pondering about putting tungsten powder into the tires. It would be a nightmare to attempt I imagine.
Since you tried water, now you gotta try beet juice. Not seriously of course but it is an actual thing strangely. It's put in agriculture equipment tires as an alternative to water I think mainly because it has lower freezing point and is a little heavier than water.
It’s Sunday funday! What’s on the bench?
I should bring that back
Hope to meet you one day at rc madness to show you my build you help inspire
I’ll be there for some events this summer. Definitely come find me 👍🏻
I've only heard of water in the tires with farm tractors. Otherwise this is quite interesting
Man water looks pretty cool. I decided I would try it on a rig. Embarrassed to say I got the first one done before I realized ALL my tires I have at moment I have vented! Facepalm!
*Does make for a neat 3 way shooting water gun when you bring it out of water and squeeze 😂
i think the tires with wire would of worked with a foam that is smaller to give more tire flex
Pool noodles are good.
I have found the bbs work better with stock tires where the rubber is alittle harder. Like trx4m tires. I used 45 to 50 bbs for front tires and 35 bbs on the rear
Makes good sense. The LGRP tires are so thin the BB's just loosely flop around. Stiffer tires would help a lot
@CapeCrawlers maybe if you could cut and glue stiffer foams to the inner ring and have the bbs lay underneath the foam. But stock trx4m tires and the fcx24 blazer tires work better with the bbs. Great reviews really enjoy your videos.
Now I gotta try some water in my rigs
😂
What flex blades do you use for your black betty trx4m? Could you please pin a link? Thanks!
Why did you do the test by filling all four tires? Only the front should have been filled with the materials you chose! Instead of steel wire, you could use lead stripes. Anyway thanks for doing this testing for us!
dont use steel, its fairly light and hard to work with, if you want a lot of weight use lead free soldering wire, i use the thich ones and they add a lot of weight, making it as heavy as a brass wheel
I wonder if the water will eventually leak. 🤔
What made you think of doing this?
I saw someone in a Facebook group mention the water idea. That was months and months ago and it's been on my mind ever since. My son and I were at tractor supply and I saw the wire and BB's and decided it was time to try them all at once!
@CapeCrawlers very interesting for sure, that's neat. Be on the look out on social media I got 828rc making me a sick wt micro build 👀
maybe weigh for each tyre so all are the same.
I wonder why manufacturers can't just figure out some insert that works best and make that standard for all tires. I am tired of tinkering around too much for the most basic things.
the last one was propably really AQUArd to install......
I see what you did there lol
Not me thinking about this for a 10th scale.
What tires are these again?
Lgrp grippers
@@HEAGames gotta get these, they look great.
How bout some weight hangers? I know this is a budget thing but….
Raise your hand if you watched every cape crawlers video 🙋🏻♂️
I don't get how this channel has blue passed all these dudes have been doing it way longer I'm not trying to be mean to you it just it's very very odd I know I had FB asked me to pay to get my stuff bumped up and get my view count up and I wasn't doing it you know and also after I become monetized My Views went way downhill but before I was monetized I was hitting a quarter of a million views in a month none of this seems right I'm not coming on here to Nag on you Adam at all I just like seems very very odd that I think anybody would say that right
I'll do a video on how I grew my channel. The topic is coming up a lot lately
