You missed the whole origin. You are correct in the "why" of naming. The need to specify a particular storm. The naming practice began in the Caribbean where they would name the storm after the saint whose feast it was on the day the storm made landfall. That is the origin of naming hurricanes.

A couple of thoughts. I didn't know that the Mayans had a god named juracan. I did know that the Tainos (natives of the Caribbean) had a God of death name Juracan, that is what I learned in Puerto Rican schools. Also we in Puerto Rico have been giving name to huracans at least since the 1800's. They used name of saints. The most mentioned ones are San Siriaco and San Felipe (Saint Phillip) at the early 1900's.

The only Atlantic storm to have its name retired without reaching hurricane strength was Allison in 2001. It formed quickly in the Gulf of Mexico and hit Houston with some moderate wind and rain. It was blasted offshore by a high pressure system, re-formed, and dumped 19 inches of rain on Houston in just a few hours when it came back ashore. It was pushed back over the water again and moved east to flood Louisiana. Allison then stayed fairly well organized as it moved over land to the north east. Allison ended up dumping its last rain on Philadelphia a week later.

"Extreme weathers" here in Norway also get names but these are local, decided by the national meteorological institute. But these are so few that they don't start from A each year but take about 7 years to use the alphabet. They also alternate between male and female. Dagmar (2011) is probably the worst of those that got names since 1995. Oddly, the last one (Knud) followed Birk, I suspect we imported the name from Denmark since that's a Danish name.

You could've also mentioned that in the event of too many hurricanes forming in a season (technically in the Atlantic/NE Pacific, a storm gets named once it becomes a Tropical Storm; just prior to a Hurricane), there is a backup list (usually another alphabet) which is then used. That happened in 2005, when the WMO actually had to use the Greek alphabet for the last few storms to form that season (which extended into 2006). The last storm that season was named Epsilon.
Also, hurricanes are capable of spawning tornadoes and waterspouts.

It's only recently that they started retiring names, and I *think* fewer rotations. Two or more score ago, I recall two storms, different years but same name, both having devastating effects on the same area. That must have been a fun conversation with the insurance agent. Agent: "it saus here we already paid your claim for storm Andrew." Claimant: "that was for Andrew 1976. This claim is for Andrew 1982."

    Me, a nerd:
Quite an accurate video, tho I'd like to point out that "cyclone" is technically a much broader term than "hurricane" or "typhoon". "Cyclone" refers to any weather system that rotates clockwise in the southern hemisphere or counter-clockwise in the northern hemisphere. All hurricanes/typhoons are cyclones, but not all cyclones are hurricanes/typhoons. Hurricanes and typhoons are more specifically "tropical cyclones", which is the kind of cyclone you mainly discussed in this video. "Cyclone" is used as a shorthand for "tropical cyclone" in the Indian Ocean/south Pacific like you mentioned. Other nitpicks I have include the depiction of eastern Pacific hurricanes hitting the west coast of the U.S. (ocean temperatures get too cold north of Mexico's Baja California coast) and that I just wish you included the fact names are usually only given once a storm acquires gale-force winds (except for the Philippines but that's irrelevant to the video). Sorry for sounding pedantic, but not a bad video!

Typhoon Mangkhut was named for the Thai word for mangosteen. While it didn't effect Thailand the furthest extent of its rain bands stretched to Bangkok and Yangon (without looking at a radar map you wouldn't have realised it wasn't just normal monsoonal rains), and on the other end reached as far as Taiwan. That's the same as going from Portugal to Russia, or from New York to Palm Springs, California! That's one big mangosteen.

They should name hurricanes after memes so that they end up on places such as r/fellowkids, therefore raising awareness on it. I mean, what could go wrong, I would love to have Hurricane Thanos Car destroy my house.
