- In this video I show you how to replace your differential on your E90 BMW. This process would be similar for the E60 or E82 etc.
More info on the LSD inside this diff:

I'm finally installing my converted differential. I converted it from an open to a limited slip differential. I have a playlist on my channel, check it out to see the rest of this series.

For anyone going to remove the drive shaft for any reason, careful using a 2” wrench. Proper size is 50mm and mine was so tight that i needed a 3’ pipe over the wrench just to loosen the red threadlocker. A 2” wrench (50.8mm) would’ve stripped the nut on my diff easily
Bruh your channel needs more attention the quality of the content is amazing 12/10
Bruh, where yat? or from? that's a south Louisiana original word
@@fjdiesi which word tho? Im from texas lol
@@eggsnbacon4283 "bruh" I use it all the time when I am with the guys or at the gym ... its the slang for "bro" which sounds shitty
Frankie Diesi we use that word over here in the bay. SF Cali to be exact.
Fact
With this video I was able to get my E92 335is open diff out and install my wavetrac LSD. This is a great tutorial! The 50mm nut loosening damn near required my full strength, this was a jack stand job so I think I wedged my knee under the wrench to break it loose. Also the final dropping of the pumpkin was super frustrating. Got it done though.
Thanks.
After thrying to find a video on the replacement or at least the removal of the rear driveshaft on a 335XI I realized your video on your LSD swap has the info I need. That rear nut that is a 2 inch nut is the one I needed to know about. Thank you again for your great videos!
50mm exactly. 2in is 50.8mm can strip it. 😊
Only video on youtube showing this job, thank you brother
Sweet! Looking forward to track times. Great video
my racingdiffs kit is getting installed today, i might even make it out to the track tonight if its all good to see if my times have improved, will post results ! Great video
Nice! You'll feel a big difference right off the bat, I can dip into the throttle twice as hard before it'll break traction under normal driving. It feels like the more you push it the better it works. I made a quick right hand turn this morning in the rain and I dipped pretty hard into the throttle and my traction control light didn't even flicker. Huge difference so far. Good luck!
Great video, man. Good luck to you. Getting stuck in Houston mud during hurricane season shouldn't be that much of a problem from now on.
Dude this is awesome. Can't wait to see the long term effects of this.
¿?
I agree with MD. Your car is twin to mine... for now but the other channels are so full of BS. I need to view all your published videos because I am up to my ass in parts to install to make this car untouchable. Thanks for your down to earth explanations too
THANK YOU MY MAN, your videos have helped me so much especially this one, only video out there for this installation
This really helped as I wasn't sure which way to turn as it stayed very hard for so long haha 😁👍
I tune in for the lsd swap. But you do such a good job on this channel ,I wish I had a BMW . ...
I won't give up my Datsun Z but I would not mind getting a bimmer just to upgrade.
Good video man! A diff bolt recently broke on my M3 and this video will be very helpfull. Thanks!
Super helpful man, I appreciate you
But it was hard 😂
Great progress!
Oh man, dis is my kinda guy who reminds me of myself, he did a rearend swap n sandles ! 👏👌👍😁😉😎
This channel is Amazing. Thank You Bimmer God
i'm curious to see by how much will the quarter miles improve. Great work bud
Great video. Appreciate the Info.
Excellent presentation ! Thanks !!
Good video brotha!! ✌️💯
Awesome skill set
Thanks, don't even own a BMW any more but this is cool as I plan to do it on my Toyota.
Can wait to see this
You should totally do a bmw e9X m3 full rear end swap. Would really tighten up things.
Nice vid👍 I'm gonna give it a go, thankyou 😉
Nice job 👍
You might think that if he can turn it by hand it's not going to do much, but the taper on the side gears and spider gears puts mechanical pressure on the clutches when power is applied. The clutches are quite small so it's not going to be as good as a real LSD.
Great informative video 👍
Good info here, looks like I need to swap my dif, starting to make a lot of noise. e91, 6 speed, M Sport.
Did you get round to a follow up in terms of performance?
Appreciate the videos so far 👊
Love your stuff bro. What floor jack is that?
good video, thank you
Torque specs
big 50mm nut to driveshaft.... 85nm/ 62 ft lbs.... blue lock tight on splines (see note below using 2" crowfoot wrench)
Rear diff bushing... 21mm back bolt.... 121 ft lbs torque spec
Front diff bushings bolts... 73 ft lbs
18mm exhaust hangars, just tight.
Axle bolts... 52 ft lbs... blue locktight
gear oil through fill hole and torque to 44.3 lb-ft with 14 mm male hex.
Note: 50mm nut torque spec using 2" crawfoot wrench: The torque wrench was 15” long from center of wrench to center of hand grip. Crow’s foot has an extra 2.25”. the torque will be 15% high or 72.1 lb-ft. The point of the formula is I set the torque wrench at 54 lb-ft to get an actual of 62 lb-ft.
Thank you Moosa aka Vehicular DIY for another amazing video! Just got quoted $1200 to install my new Wavetrac LSD... instead did it myself and all I spent was $15 for the Sunex crowfoot wrench and optional but I got a $130 trans lift from Harbor Freight.
I bought a spare diff to do this to after seeing your install video. Please keep us updated on how it holds up as I'll be ordering it soon
Legend!
I am doing the same job for f25, it's really tough to unlock the 50mm shaft nut!
Hey Vehicular DIY awesome video ive been using your videos for a while when it comes to working on my 335i Im currently doing this and Im about to refit the diff but im struggling especially on my own, in your video you skipped to where it was already bolted any tips on lining up the diff to the proshaft with the exhaust only dropped like in your video? ive had the diff fall twice now and its killing my back lol HIH @vehecular DIY
I just bought a set. Thank you for your video. Do you hear any weird noise from the diff?
Where can I find this LSD? Have a 135i that needs it. Awesome video
dude very nice job recently I bought a bmw f20 116i and i'm looking for a diff with 100% lock do you have any suggestions ?
Probable will take the exhaust off when I do it
I bought a e90 m3 rear differential I thought this video would be the same but you are good enough to build your own!. I was looking for what things I would need for a install on my e90 335i could you help with that?
u gotta put a playlist or something in desc
just wondering did you make a review video of after the LSD conversion diff was installed how did it work out for you ??
Where did you get the LSD diff is that from an M3, a rebuild, or is just a brand new purchase? Also why did you do the yolk nut instead of the driveline bolts? Need to swap a diff and thinking of going LSD while im there, Thanks!
What driveshaft is required? I have a at 09 335 and want to do this

How does the insert nut (the driveshaft nut) actually connect to the Diff Input Shaft? How does the spline on the Diff input shaft interface to the drive shaft. On M3, there are big flange but on this, it seems like the "insert nut" is the only thing that connects the driveshaft and the spline. Any idea what the torque spec on that insert nut? I'm replacing my pinion seal, so I would have to do this first.
I'm confused about the 50mm nut. Are the diffs different by year or engine? I ask bc I'm looking to buy one that needs to be towed and I'm hoping to disconnect the propshaft so that I can use a dolly to tow. I was under the impression that these use E Torx bolts.
I bought the same 2 inch crows foot but it doesn’t look like a perfect fit to that nut did you have issues with it stripping? Thx!
would this be similar or the same to a rear differential replacement on a bmw f30? if not what is different? Would it be harder or easier? thanks
Is it just a straight swap for the Manuel as well?
Hi , I dont really know much about the differential types but I feel difference in the behavior of mine car now. I had plenty BMWs like e46 , e39 , e90,e60,e66 and now again I have my 07` 330xi M sport. I paid the XDelete software to flash my car to RWD only , but when I switch the DCS off and try drifting , the car does not slip like non of my previous BMW mentioned above. What is the difference ? WHat should I do to get it slipping day car.
What are the torq specs for the diff cover bolts? I heard it’s 65nm
Would anyone know if the bmw 240i manual car M performance lsd differential with the 3.23 fit the e8x e9x chassis if swapping only the rear cover and axle flanges????
Did you have to shave down the crowfoot tool in order for it to be thin enough to use?
What is this racing diff set like? im in the market for an lsd, thanks
So I took out my driveshaft with the diff how can I removed it ? I do have a 2”.. but the drive shaft rotates what should I do to prevent it from turning?
hey so if i have a wavetrac lsd is the install pretty much the same? dumb question, but just checking
Were can I get one of this? For my 2010 335i lci e90?
I wanna install one in my clk.
I'm looking for a LSD for my e91 325i where did you get this coverted
I have a 06 330i sport I jack up one rear wheel off the ground get in the car put it in gear ( auto) and I wants to jump off the jack like it’s a possi it’s no m3 just a sport package
is it the same for a 335i rwd manual? where’d you get the diff from
this works for small size diff but does it work on the large?
Does the bmw 335d have a welded dif stock?
arent their different sizes for the driveshaft like 19 mm difference
Any reason this LSD shouldn't work on an xDrive car?
where can i get the kit?
Would this be a similar process for xdrive models
I love your chanel. I wach all your videos.. I have e91 touring. It would be geat if you make a electric parking brake retrofit video. You could use module from e65? Ir regular linear actuator? I have this idea becouse when i coded kombi module i found interesting things... Some kibd of electric parking brake nicht_active.. Please have a look at this and reply. I am willing to help with ideas/information
How did you break your lsd
Would this work on n54 335ix with xDelete ?
Did you reuse the axle bolts?
where do you buy this LSD kit?
how's that holding up?
biiiggg like!!!
Where did you get LSD, is it from an M3?
You can send it to a company and they change the inside for ya :)
Where u can do that??
How did you program it ?
How many hours would take to do this slowly?
Did you do the rear differential bushings also?. I appreciate the video as I'm going to be doing my bushings since mine are toast and starting to push out kinda scary.
I didn't as mine were still in decent shape.
What car did the lsd come out of?
Do you have any lsd laying around
were you rebuilding a mechatronics?
not the valve body eletronics
Where did you buy diff from ?
I'm looking forward to your follow up video. I have just installed mine and am not happy with it. It is only possible to lock in a straight line some of the time. A donut is not possible at all as it completely opens as soon as you start turning. Even if you get the wheels spinning first. Very disappointed
My follow up video will be pretty soon. I'm coding out the electronic diff locker in the DSC and the brake overheat protections as well. I haven't done any extensive testing yet but I've felt the DSC interfere which could be throwing everything off. What year is your car? Perhaps the E-diff is stepping in and not allowing the LSD to function as intended. I'm hoping that overall in a straight line it locks consistently. I plan to test that by seeing if I get consistent 60ft at the track hopefully in the sub 2 second mark. With the open diff I was all over the place, 2.3 to 2.6. If you were lucky and caught a good bit of track then the right wheel would spin less but the DSC was working halfway down the track.
@@VehicularDIY mines an 03 330d so no electrics to deal with. I don't think the unit is up to the job for such a heavy car. I'm sure it will be quicker from a standstill but not for what I had in mind
@@VehicularDIY that's exactly what I heard will happen.
BMW only put LSD on M3, M5, M6 etc.
Other models have issues with LSD as the vehicle is calibrated with open diff.
Anyone know where I can find a cheap rear dif 06 e90 paid 3500 an don’t want to spend 3/4 of what I paid for a dif
did you use all new bolts? I'm in the process of installing my lsd
IDTx how long did it take you to change your diff?
Did you have to do any programming to get the full effect of the lsd? From what I've read, the electronic differential (i.e. brake application to spinning wheel) can still result in some wonky behavior once an aftermarket lsd is installed - even with the DTC button held down for 5 seconds.
I didn't do any programming but I'd be interested in disabling the E-Diff option if possible. I've read that E-Diff is always on even with a long press of the DTC button. What I've noticed so far is it feels like the traction control system is getting confused by the LSD as you get limited wheel slip compared to before but when it does break traction the car remains very stable and keeps going in a straight line but the traction control intervenes hard. Before it would allow some slip and allow you to power through the slip but now it feels like you'd have to long press the DTC button always. So it would need some sort of recalibration. Haven't tried pushing it really hard with DTC full off but if it keeps kicking in I'll definitely look at coding out E-Diff.
I'd be super interested in that coding exercise, I've mirrored what you've done in other areas - huge thanks for getting rid of the fuel pump plausibility warning on my instrument cluster :) I am planning on swapping in an M3 pumpkin with the BMW LSD replaced with a Wavetrac unit, but unless the e-diff is coded out, it won't be operating fully as intended.
Thanks you for all you do to help with the platform!
Nice. Okay, you know what I'll make a video on it. It's actually really easy with NCS Expert anyway.

LSD from which car ?
Where can I buy this lsd???
why not unscrew the hardy? might be easier
Should have removed the exhaust in the first place. Also need to remove exhaust to FILL center Diff fluid in Xdrive AWD
How old was this BMW while making this movie?
instead of fighting with the wrench have somebody put it in neutral so you can rotate the shaft then back in park .
e brake should be pulled FYI
Was this kit only available for automatics? If so, if doing this to an auto diff and install in a manual car, would it fit? I know the gearing will be off, but with a high HP car, would it matter?
They have kit for manual trans. as well. But if you have welded crown it will be pita. to find who will cut it and weld back together.
@@sharklt1 Thanks! I think the really early build 335i's had a bolt in I believe, but they are really hard to find.
