A great all around performance with tempi that enhance the work's intended forward movement. A standard repertoire piece of any great orchestra, the Gewandhaus does not disappoint. Most impressive in my mind is the nuanced choral music, which along with awesome camera work result in a towering video among several others available to You Tube aficionados. An American at heart, Alan Gilbert is rightfully at home in Europe.
This is my third favorite, second is sir gibert levines 2000 in poland and first is 1998 nagano olympics opening ceremonty seji okawa, sr if name is very incorrect, but these are my favortie.

This is Alan Gilbert not Herbet Blomstedt
Great.....but why is the first movement was fast?
it's like the clockwork orange thing.
Beethoven’s marking was still faster.
@2:39
I had no idea Oskar Freysinger played the trumpet.
The conductor is not on home turf in Leipzig and shows quality with a particular combination of impulse and restraint.
Who are the soloists?
