She was ELEVEN years old when this song came out. Last Christmas, Brenda Lee broke the record for most years between number one hits! God bless her!
Eleven? Wow! Packed a punch.
Wow, for real? Amazing!
Brenda Lee's record producer was Owen Bradley, famous for producing Patsy Cline, Kitty Wells and Loretta Lynn's records. The saxophone was played by Boots Randolph, who was famous for the song "Yakety Sax". The background group was the Anita Kerr Singers. This was an updated version recorded in 1960 of Hank Williams classic. Brenda originally recorded the song in 1956 when she was 11 years old and was a huge hit for her.
Have to lol, sounds like Benny Hill to me!
@stevetreloar3129 That's because Boots Randolph's "Yakety Sax" was its main theme for opening and closing credits. It was one of the instrumentals that made me pick up a saxophone.
Best version Karen Carpenter...
The very first impression I got of this once the music started was that the sax sounded like Yakety Sax.
It's kind of amazing to hear someone so young reinterpret an all-time legend's material so confidently as she did with a song everyone knows only because of Hank Williams. Usually, when a younger artist, even one in their 20s, does a cover like this, they stick close to the original and don't feel emboldened to change it up so much. No doubt this was the influence of her amazing team on this song!
Boots Randolph on sax here. He's best known for "Yakety Sax", later used as the theme song for the Benny Hill show.
One of the greatest shows ever! 😂😅
THOUGHT that sax sounded familiar!!!
@@rhaleymusic he was the go-to session guy for sax back in the day.
Jambalaya (On the Bayou)" is a song written and recorded by American country music singer Hank Williams that was first released in July 1952. It is Williams' most recorded song.
Brenda is great, but Hank's version is always my favorite!
It's also one of the most covered songs in history!
Jay & Amber, you'll Love her "Sweet Nothin's" and "I Want to Be Wanted"!!! "Sweet Nothin's" shows her sassy side!!
@surlechapeau And "If you love me" which really shows her range, "Lonely Lonely Lonely me" and her versions of "Kansas City" and "End of the world" which are hands down the very best ones. In 1962 at a club in Hamburg Germany the Beatles actually opened for Brenda, it is now considered very much infamy.
Amazing talent at singing this song at only 11 years old ❤️
You like horns so you should look into the Big Band Era. One popular song from that period is "In the Mood" by the Glenn Miller Orchestra.
Oh.. right - Amber and Jay really don't have a Big Band play list yet... They need to swing!!! "In the Mood" for sure, and I'd start it with Benny Goodman's "Sing, Sing, Sing" or "King Porter Stomp"... but there's so many!!! Amber, Swing is kind of a cousin to jazz with a straight up front-edge fast beat that just makes you want to dance.
Her rocking around the Christmas tree is my favorite
Christmas ain't the same without it.
I tried to get them to do it last Christmas and probably the Christmas before, but no joy.
Next Friday, try Maria Muldar,..."Midnight at the Oasis " 😊
Her career started at age 9 she was called Little Miss Dynamite! An icon of country and rockabilly, inducted in Country Music Hall of Fame in 97 and the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame in 2002.
You need to cover Hank Williams' version. You won't be sorry.
Hank is great. But I'll always choose Brenda over Hank, personally.
@@jackgilchrist you can never go wrong with Brenda. Hank kills it, though
Best version Karen Carpenter...
Oh, No .... this one's fine, and fun. But Hank's is like a totally different song. Hanks version is truly Legendary. And as the author and originator, his version is truly Genius.
She had the most #1 charted hits during the 60's decade than any other female singer and 4th overall behind only Elvis, the Beatles and Ray Charles. To really appreciate her early start you should watch her first tv appearance from 1955 when she was only 10 years old, singing her signature song "Dynamite". That song and her diminutive size gave her the nickname, "Little Miss Dynamite". She's still called that and is still active. She was one of the very earliest rockabilly singers and actually became famous on the local radio when she was about 6 years old, basically supporting her very poor family when was 7 years old after her Dad died in a work accident. She's an American treasure!
YAY!!! BRENDA LEE!!! Love her Sweet Nothin's - SO GOOD!!
Great singer from the 50's...look up the recommended songs made popular by her. They're just as great!
This song was written by Hank Sr. Great performance by Brenda Lee.
A petite little bundle who can definitely pack a punch! What a voice!
I know this song performed by The Carpenters, worth checking that version too, it's very different
Yes I agree 👍 This version is great but, I am a huge fan of the carpenters, so I much prefer their take on it. As you said both very different. 🙏🙂
I grew up with the carpenters version and prefer that.
Written and originally sung by Hank Williams Sr.
And she is still singing
Saw where she was on a flight and everyone requested (,or she just offered lol) and she got on the stewardess intercom and sang. She is kid dynomite even at our age!
Yes indeed, The Carpenters had a very fine version which peaked at no.12 in the UK in 1973.
To me it was good the best version was by CCR. John has the grit to make that and what he did to I put a Spell on You
My dad had that album! He was a huge fan. He would always have to sing along (as a child that would bug the heck out of me!) This makes me remember him! Thanks!
Rocking around the Christmas 🎄 tree
The Saxophone player on this song was by Boots Randolph.
Love Brenda Lee she was popular in the 50s and still today
Another fun song by Brenda Lee is "Let's Jump the Broomstick". Also "Dynamite".
The Carpenters did this as well. Sounds fantastic!
This is great. I grew up with Brenda Lee's songs in the 50s /60s, and my favourite one of hers is Lets Jump The Broomstick, closely followed by Sweet Nothin's
I've heard different versions of this song but never Brenda Lee's version! Wow! This is fun! Great version!
Originally a Hank Williams song. Many have covered it. I didn’t know Brenda Lee also covered this song.
Pretty good version. Jambalaya has been done by A LOT of artists.
Including the Carpenters who had a hit with it in the UK in the 70's
@@1anmagnus I think my personal favorite is the Jo Stafford version
Great music. My favorite version will always be by Hoyt Axton!
@@1anmagnuslove Karen!!! ❣️
Shocking Blue has version worth trying out
You must, MUST listen to Hank Williams, Sr. Version.
He is the godfather of country music!
I might be wrong, but I think they have.
That has to be the most fun version of Jambalaya I've heard. A far cry from Hank Williams' earlier version.
And much better, in my opinion. I like Hank Williams, but c'mon... Brenda and Boots kill it.
I am so glad you are listening to more Brenda Lee. Her first hit she was 11 years old. You must listen to Emotion by her , the vocals are amazing.
That is the great Boots Randolph on saxophone and the Anita Kerr Singers wailing on those backing vocals. Another great Owen Bradley production with his "A-Team" Nashville session players who recorded with a lot of greats like Patsy Cline, Loretta Lynn, and Conway Twitty.
There are a lot of great session sax players -- and then there is Boots Randolph. His sound is so distinctive and one of a kind that he just jumps out of the speakers and you know it is him blowing.
The saxophone player was Boots Randolph. He had a big solo hit with "Yakety Sax".
When Brenda Lee was older in the 70's she did "Big Four Poster Bed".
Hank Williams Sr was the version played all the time at our house. He wrote this, and it had a zaideco sound that I loved. The original is such a great dancing song 🎵
60's female Friday suggestion - "My Boy Lollipop" by Millie Small.
Such a talent!!! Love that growl in her voice!!!❤❤❤❤❤❤. One of my very favorite songs, you can't not move when this song is on, no matter who sings it. You should check out Hank Williams version too!!! ❤❤❤❤❤❤
There is a reason they called her little miss dynamite.
Brenda Lee is a super-talented performer of songs. Boots Randolph's sax-playing is legendary.
A trip down memory lane. Jambalaya was one of the first songs I learned on guitar - probably because there are only two chords. Ms Lee slays it here. Cheers....
Great version of a great Hank Williams song .
I listened to her on my mother's turntable as a little girl all the time.
Jambalaya was one of Mrs. Rick's favorite songs growing up in the 1950s/60s. Being from the Philippines, she had no idea what most of the song was about, but the rhythm and beat was infectious to her and her friends no matter who sang it. Was in New Orleans last month for our 50th anniversary and she made sure she got plenty of jambalaya, crawfish pie, and file gumbo to eat while we were there. ❤❤❤❤
There's an absolutely legendary performance done by fats domino, Ray Charles and Jerry Lee Lewis of this song, which I've seen. Classy song
I actually had this song for dinner one time down on Bourbon Street in the Big Easy. The meal was titled "Big Time on the Bayou" and started with some filet gumbo, following by a crawfish pie on a bed of jambalaya. :-)
Brenda Lee has been an amazing performer since she was a little girl. I believe this one was recorded when she 15.
@@denpea-mm8zr I believe this is a re-recording done when she was 15.
@@jackgilchrist I stand corrected, you are correct. Still mind blowing for a 15 year old
This was written by the man himself Hank Williams Sr the king og country music
Love Brenda, amazing- no autotune or pitch correction needed! Another lady you should react to is Gale Garnett's "We'll Sing In the Sunshine".
She was my dads favorite and he is a senior citizen
This song was written by Hank Williams and recorded by him too. She was 11!! very impressive.
It sounds like the Benny Hill theme
It is the first thing that came to mind...lol
It later became the Benny Hill Theme.
The sax player is the one who did the Benny Hill theme.
Her take/cover on Hank Williams 's Jambalaya - she nailed it!! She was also big on the then rock channels/scene!! That is Boots "Yakety Sax" Randolph & the famoust Anita Kerr Singers who were a great backup group for many top singers in easy listening/MOR music & country artists!!! Great choice!! Thanks
You guys should check out Dwight Yoakum. Unless I've missed it haven't seen him on the channel. One of most underrated country artists ever. Very unique sound.
Up beat rocking:
Long White Cadillac
Fast as You
Guitars and Cadillac
Honkey Tonk Man
Slow, smooth:
I sang Dixie
You're the One
Buenos Noches from a Lonely Room
It's so funny that you would do this song by Brenda Lee when I was just reading about her yesterday. Of course I knew of her growing up, but never really appreciated her place in music history until recently. And I was surprised to find that she just topped the Billboard chart with the rerelease of Rockin' Around The Christmas Tree last December, making her the oldest artist to hold the number one position on that chart And the longest time between number one songs. You Go, Brenda!
i like but hank williams sr was the goat in his time!!!
I have heard this song all my life but never by Brenda Lee. Wow!!!
My Dad's "go-to" happy song. He would scoot around the house singing this! He was born in Marksville Louisiana. 5 min. from spring bayou ❤❤❤
A good one to check out on female Friday would be Rita Coolidge, she was big in the 70’s.
Oh, and yes she Slays this song. Little Miss Dynamite indeed. But the truth is, when I hear this song in my head, it's always in my mom's voice. It was one of her favorites to sing.
That walkin' standup bass line pounding back there! The crazy drumming and the Yakety Sax on top! They were definitely "gettin it" and without much technolgy!
AWESOME version of this song! Thank you both!!
JAY YOU GUYS NEED TO PAY US!!!!!!!!!! YOU BOTH ARE HAVING TO MUCH FUN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This how she got the name "Little Miss Dynamite" I love her Great Choice! SWEET NOTHINGS is my favorite BREAK IT TO ME GENTLY is stellar too.
Happy Holudays Guys from Your Friend ~Brooklyn Red
Why have I never heard of Brenda Lee before??? I LOVED this!!!!
Love Brenda Lees voice 👍♥️🙏✝️✌️😎
Quite a big voice comes out of this tiny little Lady. Aawwwww you didn't find the live version. I love watching her. She's so tiny. I think she's all of like 4 ft 9 in. She was a powerhouse.
ooh, that's eerie - I have no idea why, but this song has been stuck in my head all week, and now y'all are playing it 😮🙃🎵
Love you guys!
Brenda Lee - if you love me 🎵 always a classic
ELEVEN YEARS OLD! Scary talent.
Jay’s poor neck!! Loo❤❤😂😂
'Brenda Lee coming on strong' from Radar Love
Hank Williams wrote this song. John Fogerty and the Blue Ridge Rangers also recorded. They did a great job.
Y'all might remember this song from Steel Magnolias, though it wasn't Brenda's version. It was the song they played at Shelby's reception where everyone was throwing down on the dance floor.
Sounds like that sax player is going to bust into Yakity Sax any second!
Yakity yak.
Don't talk back.
Yakety Yak.
Don't talk back.
@@user-ii4zf5iq3t Just tell your hoodlum friends outside,
You ain't got time to take a ride!
She did a great job on the Hank Williams song.
Great reaction, Jay and Amber! I think that you will like Brenda Lee's Sweet Nothin's. The song is slower but, still stylish and gritty!
Also Please don't forget to check out:
Christina Aguilera - Ain't No Other Man - Candy Man (Both Great Horns !!) Also - Lady Marmalad
Annie Lenox (Eurythmics) - Would I Lie to You - I Need a Man - Thorn in My Side
Gwen Stefanie - It's My Life - What You Waiting For
Shikira - When ever Where ever - Objection Tango
Head Pins - Don't it Make You Feel (like Dancing) - Turn it Loud - Just One More Time
Toronto - Your Daddy Don't Know - Start Telling the Truth
Love everything she ever did!
Wow, she was young here. She had such a mature voice for her age. I heard that The Carpenters performed this one as well.
Brenda Lee, what a voice. She gets a mention in Golden Earring's tune "Radar Love" Quote: "The radio's playing some forgotten songs, Brenda Lee coming on strong." Lets try & keep the memory of her music alive.
"My all time top tune from her is "Is it True" the Bass & Brenda's voice make it a must. Another favourite is "Here comes that Feelin' again"
Coming On Strong is the song referred to.
Little Miss Dynamite only "4 feet 9 inches" my favourites are "All Alone"- " I'm Sorry" and "I Wanted to Be Wanted" sold over 100 million records active years 1951- to present . Peace out.
The first version I heard as a child was The Carpenter's version! I love this version, but if you check out The Carpenter's version, you will hear it's the same song, but completely different, although just as good! As a child in the UK, I had no clue what they were singing about, but loved the song!
during the dance scene at the wedding on steel magnolias this is the song hat was played in that scene
Brenda Lee is fantastic!
Hey, if you're going back we haven't heard Louis Armstrong in a bit. Try
West End Blues
Loved this. Wish you would react to the man who created the electric guitar Les Paul and his song How High the Moon sung by his wife Mary Ford, classic song and voice!
The funniest version of Jambalaya for sure.
You seem to enjoy fun, blues and vocal agility. Try Lawrence you won't regret it. Dont' Lose sight (acoustic) is the best to start with.
Dang !!! Never heard her like this, so great. !!!
The best ever saxophone song is Harlem Nocturne by the Viscounts. They have a killer version on RUclips. It's from the late 50s/early 60s, and is well worth reacting to. I guarantee you'll fall in love with it.
And she's just a little bitty thing with such a big voice. Grammy Kathi here.
Brenda Lee is awesome! You need to hear John Fogerty’s Blue Ridge Rangers Version of Jambalaya, it’s a rocked up country version! He sings and plays all the instruments on that album!
What really surprised me with this reaction was you actually found a posted Jambalaya not showing Brenda singing this live. I do wish you had reacted to a live performance but this will do.
Good knee slapping music 🎶 yes indeed, love it ty guys 😀✌️
Oh my, I don’t remember her singing this song, I might’ve been a year or two, too young. LoL! 👍💛💛
Brenda a member of Rock Hall of fame, country hall of fame, rock a billy hall of fame, maybe more
love this song. I was just singing this song the other day at work. Brenda Lee was a rock star for the times.
Little Miss Dynamite! You need to see her there are some old films of her at this age on You Tube she was 11 but looked 6 or 7 because of her small stature! Love Brenda
i love brenda kee.
she had a cameo in (smokey and the bandit) simply because the star of the movie mr. burt reynolds was a fan.
i hope you react to this movie.
To really appreciate this record, you need to place it beside the Hank Williams version. When this came out everyone was still playing Hank's version, Which was a huge fun time hit. When this came out, it must have been a marvel of the day. It was the same words set to an entirely different and exciting rhythm.
Love it!!🤘🔥
