- For some reason, when Dr Cox is sad it really just hits home. He's like this unshakeable rock that you don't expect to ever crack! Dr Syl reacts to this emotional episode and reflects on his own time as a doctor in hospitals. My Fallen Idol is the twenty-first episode of Scrubs' fifth season. Friends try to cheer up Dr. Cox after the accidental death of several patients on his watch but J.D. refuses to see Dr. Cox after he sees Cox at work drunk. Meanwhile, Turk can't connect with an extremely extroverted surgeon, Dr. Stone.

Not sure if this has been mentioned, but a much earlier episode of Scrubs, JD and Turk were on call and while out of the hospital had drinks with a mate who was visiting, and then got paged to come in. Dr Cox came to dress them down for being late and smelled the beer on them and ripped them a new one for coming to work drunk - just a bit of extra character depth you might not be aware of, with Dr Cox doing something he clearly wouldn't be happy with anyone else to do.

Sadly the actor Sam Lloyd who played Ted died in 2020. But yeah The Blanks were amazing.
That's so sad. I'm grateful his voice was captured to live on in his beautiful music. May he rest in peace.

In the episode in which Turk and Carla get marries, the band doesn't show up so Ted and his band, known in show as The Worthless Peons, take the stage and absolutely crush it. Not only did they sing amazingly and played really funny shows, they were all pretty nice guys. I had the pleasure to see them twice in Germany in 2011 and 2012 and talk to them and take some photos after the show. I told Sam that I just started studying laws and that I would hang the picture of us in my office once I would start working as a lawyer. We had a funny little chat that maybe Ted isn't the best role model to follow. I am a lawyer now but sadly, he passed away a few months before I started working so I couldn't mail him a photo of our picture on the wall. I think he would have laughed at it pretty much.
The other band members are the nicest guys as well. After the first gig we saw, my girlfriend developed kind of a fan crush for George (the guy with black hair) and on the second gig, he wasn't giving autographs after the show because he didn't feel well. We asked where he was and my girlfriend must have looked kind of sad because they told us to wait and one of them went backstage to see if he was still there to come over for a second. He wasn't but they apologized for like 5 minutes so she would cheer up :-D

The thing that was really well done about the duology is how much it calls back to prior episodes. Dr. Cox showing up drunk is a direct parallel to Turk and JD showing up drunk in earlier season and Cox throwing them out of the hospital for it, for example. People usually cite Ben's funeral as the emotional opus of he series but I'd argue that My Lunch/My Fallen Mentor wallowed more in Dr. Cox's compulsion, making it slightly better.
Turk and JD weren't even drunk in that episode; they'd only had a beer or two.
Laverne's death always hits me really hard as well; Judy's performance at the end saying goodbye was so perfect.
Scrubs is kinda timeless to me lol I literally watched like every season. Dr Cox was one of my faves. His sarcastic humour was everything 😂
I rewatched the whole show recently and while I still enjoy it there are definitely parts that didn't age that well imo

Munchausen by proxy is almost always a caretaker harming the person they are looking after, and it's usually a mother keeping her child sick. I've been fascinated by Munchausen's by proxy ever since seeing the movie "The Sixth Sense".

I'm so familiar with Scrubs that there are several lines I always think of in real life when faced with particular things. When I see a wrench, I hear the Janitor's voice saying "knife wrench!" When I say that something is a mistake, I hear JD's imaginary opera singer in the tuxedo standing behind him saying "Mistaaaaaake!" in a booming opera voice.

In 1978, as a Medic in the US Air Force, I did a study on the sly, asking nurses, techs & MD's what their "go to" was to get thru the stress, whether drugs - lots of drugs back then, alcohol, nicotine, caffeine (way before Red Bull, etc.). The truthful answers were amazing - EVERYONE was doing something just to get through their shift. It is still that way today, BUT no one discusses it. Thank you for your Reactions to Scrubs. I raised my children on the show, I still work in Health Care 40 years on.
There was an episode, I think in the prior season, that highlighted how easily germs spread throughout a hospital. It's hard to explain, but you basically get to witness the moment a nosocomial infection is transmitted from doctor to patient. I want to say the ep was called "My Cabbage".
Oh, and on an unrelated note, it's always worth looking into the music featured on Scrubs. That program showcased so many tremendous singer/songwriters including Braff's real life best friend, Joshua Radin.

I absolutly love the JD & Cox Moments: Cox always has the tough love for him but he only wants him to succed as he believes that he can be a great doctor 🥺🥺🥺
Scrubs is so special for it's incredible writing and acting and uncanny way of making you laugh and cry and cuts straight through to the essence of the human condition. I love Dr. Cox and J.D.'s relationship morphs over time from mentor / trainee, to eventually more and more like peers. And the performances are so good, like you said, you can see the burning 🔥in Dr. Cox's eyes like he's been hit with a truck.
Going out into nature is definitely a thing. Over here in The Netherlands we have a thing to do we call "Uitwaaien". Which literally translates to "Getting windblown". It is the act of going out and having a bit of a walk and letting the wind blow the cobwebs out of your head.
You're the first doctor I've seen to cover the second part of the two-parter.
Thanks for reacting to this video! Re: gossip, apparently gossip was one of the early forms of communication, part of what they call the 'cognitive revolution' where our species took a real turn. Initially, being able to share information about other people helped to form trust and bonds in smaller groups. Then we were able to share information across groups or about other groups (warnings, etc) which was key for survival. Having more complex language allowed us to plan and strategise. Someone in trouble, stuck in a hole and need more hands? They could send word back to the camp for help. It's a shame that a form of communication that was probably predominantly used to help is now associated with being very divisive and damaging.
This episode made me realize the one where Jordan's brother died and they do the sitcom twist reveal on it was actually Cox walking around drunk in denial

I have district nurses visit my home, once the nurse became faint after not eating, me and the other nurse sat her down, got her some water and when she felt more with it the other nurse drove her. Another time, the nurse collapsed outside in a dizzy spin, luckily 2nd nurse there too and she drove her off to the hospital, turned out she had inner ear infection! Not quite the same as drunk, but they were too unwell to be at work and driving, they recovered well 🙂🔥

I love Nicole Sullivan its crazy how much an impact her character had for being a side character in the show
A close family member of mine was a healthcare provider from the 1970’s through 1990’s and developed a serious opioid addiction late in their career. It happened immediately after a serious trauma in their personal life. Luckily they recovered and are very much still with us and enjoying retirement.
I've been struggling with mental health problems for about 12 years now and it did get better with time so I never thought it was severe enough to seek help. When you and the show were talking about hugs it kinda made me realize that my "good day" is just me managing to cope. If I were to hug someone for maybe 10 seconds I feel that I'd still surely break into tears. 🔥🚒

Recently started rewatching Scrubs. Watched probably 3 other doctors react to "My Lunch", so it was cool to see you react to that one, as well as this one. It's a great character arc for Dr. Cox. 🔥
"Why is gossip addictive?" If I had to guess I'd say it's because humans are such social creatures. Knowing things about the people around you gives you a heads up in social interactions. Humans can also be pretty competitive and knowledge is power. Maybe we're just hardwired to find bits of information about the people around us interesting to a fault.
Each episode of scrubs may not always contain a ton of medical information, however like this episode shows, it gets into the more personal and emotional side of being a healthcare worker which is also incredibly important

The Blanks' version of Somewhere Over The Rainbow was actually featured on Scrubs! The episode "My Way Home", which was their 100th episode (and directed by Zach Braff/JD). :)
Rewatching this episode now touched me in an unexpected way. I don't work in medicine, but in IT and a few years ago I started a new job and become friends with a younger engineer. I never really realised how much I was teaching him, but one day he came out and said that I was like a mentor to him. It was unexpected and not something I ever imagined I'd be to someone, but it was certainly nice to know.
Fast forward to now and I've since left that job and things aren't going too well for me. Kinda wondering if I'm finally going through that famous mid-life crisis, but whatever it is, it isn't fun - and one of the sad things is that I've not been able to talk to this friend recently, because I feel a responsibility to maintain that mentor persona. Like JD said here about him thinking of Cox like a superhero, from the other side, I feel a need to maintain that facade for this guy, because I don't want my failures to possibly rub off on him in some way.
Sounds silly when you write it, but it feels like if you are a mentor to someone, you always need to have the answers for their problems and if you have unanswerable problems of your own, then you strip them of that security that you gave them as a mentor. If that makes any sense!
Thank you for sharing. All I know is being vulnerable and honest to the right person can be life changing and deepen friendships like nothing else.

In the entirety of the show the ending of this episode is my favorite scene because it’s a really rare bonding scene between two characters that you see all the time usually reacting to each other in a more hostile way and it shows a side of Dr. Cox that you only get to see in like three or four episodes throughout the entire run of the show.
WRT gossip you mentioned, I have a plausible theory from an evolutionary psychology perspective. Formal learning in school is a relatively recent concept. Early humans learned via observation - we saw someone go into a lake and get eaten, we learned not to go into the lake. That worked great for humans that saw something bad happen firsthand, but there wasn't a way to pass that knowledge on until language and stories.
A story is the smallest unit of useful social information: "I was somewhere, I needed something, I tried some strategy to get it, and here's how that turned out". Learning via hearing about someone else's experiences, that's pretty cheap wisdom for us. Gossip ties into that same system. From a socio-evolutionary perspective, "Did you hear about grog? He went in that lake and got eaten by a crocodile, don't go in that lake or you'll get eaten too" and, "Did you hear about Dr. Cox, he showed up drunk at work and got in trouble, don't come to work drunk or you'll get in trouble too" are practically the same thing. 🔥
As someone who’s mom was sick and spent over a decade in hospitals to the point the surgeon asked if I was a dr or nurse bc the questions I asked….. just ask them if it’s ok, say due to the moment you think a hug would be good…. When my mom died, our drs prayed with us, and then I played some music as she took her last breath, they too bawled as my father grabbed her and I just sat there holding her hand… hugs went all around… she died horrifically as well….
Women just like being asked, and then they can say no, and you can say I’m so sorry for this moment.
JD's "The More You Know" segment is a parody of a real series of Public Service Announcements that have run on the NBC network in the United States since 1989. It replaced a previous series of PSA known as "One to Grow On" which began in 1983. These were aimed at younger viewers have been the source or many parodies. "Scrubs" originally ran on NBC from Season 1-7 and then moved to ABC for seasons 8-9.

I was born and raised around a family of alcoholics, knowing what a beer was by the age of three. I grew into becoming one, constantly fighting, and after my first relapse, I dove deeper than I was.. After almost 15 years, I reconnected with my high school sweetheart who I fell for all over again, though it took its toll -- she gave me the ultimatum of her or the drink.
The choice was obvious; we're now happily married and in a sober home. She even had a wine collection valued in the thousands that she sold to help me avoid the temptation, but I have none for the sake of her and her (now our) child.
As much as I love this episode, I felt and still feel Cox's pain of feeling helpless after years of fighting, not just his, but my own demons.
If you need help with that battle, or even just an ear to rant to, I'm here. Any friend of Bill's is a friend of mine, so don't be afraid to admit your troubles -- I'm here to help you my friends.
I remember a couple of years ago watching a couple of RUclips doctors react to these episodes and I enjoyed it but I absolutely love your reactions and analysis of the show best on the site ! Definitely subscribing!
The relationship between Kelso and Cox is one of the best. There is a line in a later episode of the series, around season 7 I think, that cracks me up every time I hear it, but will not spoil it.

As someone who has been under the influence while I was supposed to be taking care of others, I cant make any excuse. It is indefesible.
A friend was addicted when he was in medical school. Here’s my take: you have to forgive yourself. For you, not others. You didn’t use to hurt others, you used because you needed that substance.
Here in Texas there was a surgeon who got high on cocaine and maimed patients and killed two and the hospital knew he had an issue with cocaine. Didn't do anything about it and to make matters worse the Attorney General of Texas at the time defended the hospital system and later on got a nice donation from a board member of said hospital system for his successful run for governor.

The bit at the end about alcoholism is spot on. I have struggled with it for nearly 20 years and I still do, glad to say with much progress made and significant gaps in suffering moments. Admitting you need and want help are key starting points.

I know of a nurse that was an alcoholic and when she relapse she worked while under the influence. Luckily her husband that was a doctor notified the hospital. But it's scary how alcoholics can be so used to alcohol that it's hard to tell they are drunk.
Alcoholism with doctors in general and during shifts has gotten better quite some time ago. When my uncle started as a doctor somewhen in the 60s/70s, they still had those crazy long shifts and alcoholism was sadly a way of dealing with this and thus a big issue for quite a few doctors back then, including my uncle. And depending on what form of alcoholism you suffer from, you would not be so noticeably drunk as Dr Cox was in this episode.
Scrubs is my favorite show ever. Of all time. Absolutely love the trend of doctors reacting to it

Sad addendum: The actor for Ted is Sam Lloyd, who died 2020 aged 56, one year after he became a father and he received the diagnosis for his fatal illness.
I think one thing JD did that helped was that he didn't try to relate or talk about himself or his own experiences - he talked about Dr. Cox; his view of him and what he meant to him. He knew that his fear was his problem, he didn't make his worry Dr. Cox's problem. That's very important: when life force feeds someone lemons - don't tell them to make lemonade because YOU think that sounds dandy; shut up instead and make it about what THEY want to do or what THEY need to talk about. Don't make it about you.
⠀ The last thing I need to hear when I'm clinically depressed is about a moment in your life when you were super-duper sad; I haven't showered for two months, you idiot, it's insensitive and vain of you to even try to relate and guess what? - I don't care if YOU believe you can relate; I'm trying to stay ALIVE. And if I'm mourning being psychotic I don't need to hear your story about a psychosis your second cousin had. I'm already frightened and despise myself because I'm hearing voices that don't exist; I don't need to hear yours. I'm not there to be relatable, I'm not there for you to feel good about yourself for sharing your life wisdoms, I'm not your ego boost or someone for you to roleplay motivational speaker with; I'm chest deep in utter shite and black darkness and I don't care about you.
Some people have to just accept that there is no quick fix, nothing healing for them to say to make it all go away. Sometimes it only feels condescending when they try. Do they have good intentions? - Yes, most probably. But they can do more harm than good if they're not careful about what they say and how they act.

I have a somewhat interesting hug story. I was taking a OSHA certification class for my degree when I was in college, and we were doing presentations on industrial disasters. One of the guys in class was from Bangladesh, and he told about a series of building collapses that happened due to poor construction in his country. He liked to cycle, and during the disaster, the group he cycled with became volunteer medical responders that would go out into the rubble and look for people to try and bring back. He talked about seeing dead people, and how he would never forget the sights and the smells of that experience. We had talked two or three times before about metal bands and stuff, but I didn't really know him that well. Anyways, after his presentation, he had this super sad look on his face and I instinctively reached out my hand when he was walking back to his seat. Idk what I was intending, a handshake maybe. I was definitely intending to comfort him in some way. But he went right in for a hug and I mumbled, "OH a hug, uh, I'm sorry you had to go through that man" and we just had this hug in the middle of class lmao. The weird part of the story is that years later, my sister started dating a guy from Sri Lanka (who is now my Brother in Law, love him) and I ended up telling him that story and he was like "Oh yeah, that's our friend Yuki." He had moved out of the States a year or so prior to me meeting my now-BIL but was a part of their friend group because a lot of international students tend to hang out/look out for each other. I have a lot of SE Asian friends now and they thought the story of me randomly sharing a hug with a guy they had hung out with a lot was really funny and a neat little "small world" moment.
Am I the only one that noticed he stopped himself (very quickly, I might add..great job, BTW) from saying "Do shit like that"? LOL
🔥 Happy to see another video come up on my feed, instant watch on my Saturday off. Scrubs has always been an incredible show, and even though here and there you might find a moment that has not really 'aged well' you can forgive and gloss over it for the countless quality moments and great writing.
And hugs *are* important. Just sad it's been over a year since I've had one. 😭

I used to work in supported housing for young people, and we weren't really allowed to hug the kids as could be construed as sexual assault. However I had to get an ambulance out for a DV case, me and another staff member took the young person to thier flat and had to help them Change so they could have proper examination of their injuries however when we changed them we came.face to face with the bruises, and blood and damage that had been caused to them. We ended up crying and hugging the young person. As we were overwhelmed with emotions and a feeling of being unable to help.
We had to write a report about what happened and explain what happened with our boss. But I would never regret hugging.them in that moment I truly believe as much as we were affect from seeing them, it also helped the young person feel comforted after fleeing the horrific instant

Going to be honest, as an Anesthesiology Resident, most (not all) of the Orthopods I've worked with in residency and known throughout medical school are total jocks/meatheads - still smart, but the stereotype is there for a reason lol
Hmmm I do remember a scandal of a senior doctor get to his shift drunk but that was back in the 90's . And to be honest it didnt make too much noise in the media. I know about it sice I am related to a nurse from the very place.

When I was in the US Marines, there was a Navy Doc who would show up to work intoxicated quite often. He was a higher ranking officer so there were only a couple people on base who he reported to. I heard that he was reported a couple of times but always passed his urinalyses and breathalyzer so there were never any consequences. Officers take care of their own. I'm pre-med now, hopefully I won't have to deal with that too much once I'm an MD
I have personal space issues, I don't like other people touching me, I don't even like hand on shoulder, if my depression is particularly bad I can't even tolerate hugging my family, it just makes my skin crawl.
Man I'd hate to work someplace you'd be scared to ask for a hug when you really need one.

Hey Dr Syl, just saw this vid a year after it came out hahaa but since no one cleared this up for you I thought I'd take it. The whole "my german financier died on the autobahn" thing: So you've probably heard of internet scams like having to do with "a nigerian prince" etc meant to get you to send them your money, then something "mysteriously happens to them," thats what this was so JD gave his money to a person posing as a german financier and then "OH NO HE DIED ON THE AUTOBAHN." So ya, JD got scammed and thats why he's shooting the thing on his cell phone in like 2005. Love the videos, discovered them yesterday and I love scrubs, seen it a million times and its totally awesome to see it with this new dimension added to it.
18:35 - when my youngest brother was in kindergarten (1988), we were playing touch football in our front yard (mom wouldn't let us play tackle ball because she was scared I would hurt him). While running with the ball, he was looking back at me to try to dodge any tag I might apply. Since he wasn't looking at where he was going, he ran smack into a tree, causing a huge bruise on the side of his face. This was about the time that child abuse was becoming a major issue and schools were required to report any suspicious injuries. Fortunately, his teacher had known my family for >20 years, so she called my mom and told her that she was required to report these sorts of injuries, but wanted to know what happened, because she was sure he had not run into a tree. Of course, mom had to confirm that yes, he was telling the truth and had run into a tree.
Of course, with 3 high energy boys who all played sports, my parents were at the hospital about once a month it seemed, so were used to being questioned about abuse. No, really, he jumped off of the foyer balcony, no really, he was hit in the eye with a mud clod which had a rock inside, no really, this 22 year old hurt his knee jumping on the bed with his 17 year old brother, no really, he was walking along the edge of the sidewalk (as if it were a balance beam) with his hands in his pocket and fell when he tried to jump a gap...
I cracked my ribs on a rollercoaster, when I went to ED they kept asking how it happened...
There wasn't much medicine. But there was a lot about the experience of being a doctor. So video was worth it I would say.

Professional advice, whenever you think it's cathartic and selfgiving validation, just listen and forget what you heard like you don't speak English, do your job and go home, workmates are not nor they will be ever, your true friends, and never no matter how much vulnerable you'd want to be to a girl at work because you may have a crush on her, do not tell her any too personal thing, she will use it to destroy you the minute she loses control no matter how low this might get.
