That is my father Jimmy Peterson on piano, (and my mother Mable leaning on the piano keeping dem gurls in check) with the first words in the movie. The normal gig was the piano player and arranger for Louis Jordan and His Timpany Five, as well as his own group, The Jimmy Peterson Trio. Spenser Williams speaks for himself. ❤️🖤💚😎🤘🏾
Thanks for posting! That's my mama Joyce Mc Elrath, singing, "Beale Street Mama." She had a lovely career after this, notably a long engagement years later at Don Robey's famous Texas supper club. That's where Billy Strayhorn heard her on stage and personally escorted her to an on-the-spot audition for Duke Ellington. He was impressed, too and wanted to work with her. But she was afraid to break Robey's contract. So, Ellington asked her to reconnect when it expired. Never happened. Told me that she was tired of life on the road. Went home, got married, and settled down. That's fate! Thanks again.
@@reelblack Yes, it was years later when researching things that I discovered Robey was well-known for using violence. There were no other films. Can't thank you enough for posting this. We've finally seen it! Blessings to you!

It's the same old story, rerun mentalities and scenario. I so love the restraint in these older movies. Sometimes how It's done makes all the difference. Ain't that just like a fool and his money, all over town spending. I yi yi

As a blues fanatic I dug the piano players boogie riffs. But I thought the script was a bit of stereotyping at a time when Black folks and culture was seen as less than.
Wonder why⁉️ Just born that way or made that way . Speak for yourself. Not me. Raised differently deliberately away from this kind of culture, which by the way isn’t that particulately Black. You find it wherever you find poverty. What IS distinctively Black is the love of music and dance, good times: relief from the deprivation forced on us by forces greater than us. Not all that different today. The similarity to women today ( and men) is the similarity to conditions today. When concrete conditions change, people change. And who changes the conditions? People. Just saying. Keep it in perspective. “Fa sho” - we can be funny.
I watched this one for the music. Don Albert was a territory band out of San Antonio that recorded some good ones in the thirties. Interesting to see his band in a mid-40s movie. Like most territory bands, they are little rough but swing hard. Sorry, but I fast forwarded through most of the alleged acting and alleged plot.
Was the man, July Jones, who bought the woman the car mentally disabled? Matilda treated him horribly. 35:00 Why does the male have white paint around his mouth? 😣 Is the aggressive language in comedy routine supposed to be funny?
A funny comedy, but I admit I find the fall guy's performance embarrassing. He seemed to smarten up once he had money, though. Spencer Williams stood out as the most polished pro in the cast.
WOW blackface in a black produced film? I guess society was totally segregated as was the military, & brothers were still being lynched2. Damnnnn!!!! And those were the good times 4who?!!!
the act, kinda creepy shows the narrative of black relationships.. how he talks about beating her the first guy had a woman only wanting money...woe...love old films speaks volumes
I pity the audiences in 1946 who paid to see this. Acting, screenplay, photography, editing-- all incredibly bad. Sack Amusement Enterprises did no one any favors releasing this; a real embarrassment to watch.
You must be so young, you do not understand what Black film makers had to go through to get anything out to the public. Using your own money, below budget productions, cultural scorn, blah blah blah, on down the line...

"Pretty Boy Brown" looks familiar. I think I've seen him in another movie.
Black face? They were still doing this in 1946? Wow.

It seems odd to criticize Black people for doing Blackface. We are allowed to poke fun at ourselves.
