Ruby Dee has a sister named Eurie who worked with my mom at Huron Rd Hospital in Cleveland, Ohio. Ruby and her hubby (Ossie Davis) came for a visit. Eurie shared with them some hot tamales that my mom had made. They loved them. That made my mom soooo happy! I still have that recipe.
Ossie Davis' absolutely magical writing and performance is the best I've ever seen! I'm so grateful to know movies like this existed, and I'm so glad I get to revisit some I've seen through the decades, especially the 60's and 70's. I feel I could write volumes about this production, all saying, wow!*
I love this movie and anything with Ruby Dee, Ossie Davis, and Beah Richards in it!! I first saw this movie years back when TV One first came out. They don’t show the oldies anymore, but thanks to Reelblack we get to see them and much more. Thanks Reelblack 🙏🏾🖤
Ossie and Ruby were two of the best...period. Both were brilliant. Growing up watching them two on the screen...almost every thing they did made me proud to be African American. Their art and skill gurgled in greatness, ever resounding "black lives matter."
I guess Im randomly asking but does anyone know of a way to get back into an Instagram account? I was stupid forgot my account password. I appreciate any assistance you can offer me.
Seeing Ossie and Ruby on screen is so angelic. Everything they touched turned into gold. Just today I road past a park that is named after her, in New Rochelle New York. I know their in heaven together still in Love 🙂🙂
I wanted to give a big shoutout to the creators/members of the reelblack page. It brings me so much joy to survey the masterful collections of beauty black people who demonstrated brilliance, resilience, bravery, legacy, superb-talent & skill, beauty, style in all corners of the world & universe. To be able to relive my childhood at the age of 11 when I first watched this movie, has me on a natural high. Thank you for this. I would love to connect with a member of this group.
I have been looking for this since my late 20s, for those that don't like this movie, I thought it was funny and thought provoking. This is what happens when you don't pay attention
In the '60s, when I was a child, Ossie Davis and Ruby Dee visited Montclair NJ to visit Mr. and Mrs Jones. Almost every 4th of July...they'd visit the Jones family. the Jones were my grandparents' best friends, they attended St Mark's Church...we were pre-teens and there were no selfie cell phones or even the idea of intruding on their privacy by taking pictures...
Wow... Thanks for posting! 1963😃... How brave and excellent. Humour, dialogue, message... And the true intelligence of "Step and fetch it" characters revealed. Loved this movie!!!
I saw this play (the Clifton Davis, Melba Moore version) in the 1970s!! I have been searching for the album (or any version) for YEARS!!! Leave it to Reelblack to Deliver!! Saving this one. Thank YOU again, RB. Always in your debt!! 💗💕👵🏽💗🌱
@@vegascece I wonder how the composers achieved that? Or was it the rare chance to feel connected to the actors in an ‘extended family’ way? But the lines & lyrics succeeded in having that kind of staying power in the memory!! AND it’s not just me. 🥰😂☺️💝🎄
Must've been another channel who posted this some time ago but I swear I watched it here. 1 of my favorites since I'm an actress I've memorized & replay cousin bee & ossie part when she meets her mother old master 😂😂 ossie is genius and he str8 outta Georgia ❣
The current production of PURLIE VICTORIOUS on Broadway (The Music Box Theatre) is MAGNIFICENT! It's a limited run, ending February 4th, 2024. The cast is absolutely brilliant!
I was looking for Purlie (stage version) when I happened upon your channel. Subby for life!! You have outstanding content, with so much entertainment I remember from my youth/teens that I have never watched. Where's my popcorn because this is going to be a long relationship! TY!
The revival of PURLIE VICTORIOUS that is running on Broadway for several weeks more (ends 2/4/24) is FANTASTIC! See it while you can! It is so beautifully done! ♥️ (The play, not the musical version, although I hope there will be a revival of that, too!)
We have got to continue to educate our young people about the great shoulders on which they stand. How our peeple use their art & creativity to educate & you foster liberation, revolution & freedom. It is so vital. Ossie Davis & Ruby Dee. The "Martin Luther King & Corretta Scott King" of theater & entertainment. 💯
After seeing Ruby Dee's performance, her range & diction,I now know where the "Whitley"character that made Jasmin Guy a TV show sensation originally came from
I mean the "Whitley" character on the 1980's TV show "Different World" had to be an imitation of Ruby Dee's performance in this film copied to a T by Jasmin Guy
When I finally understood what they were rejoicing about, I ABSOLUTELY LOST IT. I mean , I was not expecting that , AT ALL. I wasn't even born yet but I still appreciate that opening scene. Thanks reel black because I'm definitely feeling your channel . Oh and one more thing, Ruby Dee was hot in her day ! Ossie had extremely good taste.
Saw a local version of this with my grandparents in 1987 in Fresno, California. Kinda wild how James Coco basically took his Captain Cotchipee character and tweaked it for Boss Hogg on The Dukes of Hazzard.
The very first Broadway play I saw ( Melba Moore was phenomenal ❗️❤️. Sherman Hensley as Gitlow was crazy funny. He went on to become our beloved George Jefferson. 🙂 ) Great Play Production 1❤️🖤💚 Luv
Ruby💍Dee, like the👑Queen of Sheba, was so👄beautiful, she💃really defined what is "Black🖤Beauty"👌4🎺 the✊Colo-Red❤️Peoples with Mr. O. Davis shinning like a Pearly🦪Diamond💎made US👣wonder at Colors of L😎VE=mc2!

Thank you for sharing such a wonderful film. It is much deaper in spirit that any movie I have ever seen. This movie moved my spirit in ways I have never been moved by any movie. WOW! Black men use to have a strong face, strong jaw, I love black men, you could see the authority in them, feel it,......................: Black people our lives does matter, long over due, for many things. Yet while we've been going about this life, something happened to us mattering to each other. we have to matter to each other🤗
black lives matter was started by homo sexual LGBQ people ...black lives do matter but not to LGBQ P people who are using this organization to push their sinful agenda to push homo sex its not a race
In the comments I read that someone had noted that Davis and Ms Dee were 46 and 41 at the time of the movie . Most likely since of their birthadys are rather late in the year they were probably 45 and 40 . But they , especially Ms Dee photographed young .
Many black people don't realize that Ruby Dee and Ozzie Davis narrated a lot of black history documentaries. Julius Lester's "To be a Slave," "The History of Negro People," "Every Tongue got to Confess," "47," "I never had it Made." Are just a few.
Wow, a very young Alan Alda & Godfrey Cambridge!!
Love Ossue David and Ruby Dee. Just beautiful actors and actress❤😂❤😂❤😂❤😂❤

Ruby Dee & Ozzie are stunning. I'm grateful to have this masterpiece of Black historic theater to reflect upon.

And sadly, still relevant today.
Right up till she was old. A babe!

@Beverly Beverly yep. Fake as a four dollar bill.

Yes
Ossie and Ruby were two of the best...period. Both were brilliant. Growing up watching them two on the screen...almost every thing they did made me proud to be African American. Their art and skill gurgled in greatness, ever resounding "black lives matter."
The lessons in this movie are so important
This should be a required viewing in all schools!
I have never seen this, but it is so profound! Thank you, I will share this
What a find! Absolutely 💯 love this movie along with the stellar performers that made it a winner.

Rest in power and happy birthday to ossie Davis 12 18. This is his masterpiece I have learned about how to write from his example
Godfrey Cambridge is a hoot! And Sorrell Booke is giving it all he got! He's a hoot, too! Both awesome artists in this work of art!
THIS MOVIE IS JUST AS IMPORTANT TODAY AS IT WAS BACK THEN. SAME PROBLEMS AS IN 1963.
Thank you for sharing this film. I will encourage my students at Miles College, in Birmingham, Alabama to watch.
Outstanding!
1963, Ossie and Ruby Dee were probably around 46, 41. Wow, they look much younger!

This is so good! Love❤Mr Ossie Davis & Ruby Dee. Wondering if Hilda (Missy) is kin to Octavia Spencer, they sure do favor.
In the comments I read that someone had noted that Davis and Ms Dee were 46 and 41 at the time of the movie . Most likely since of their birthadys are rather late in the year they were probably 45 and 40 . But they , especially Ms Dee photographed young .
Omg one of my favorites
I really dont know much of this flim? But the actors are great.
Purlie!!!
In his early movies whenever Sidney Poitier appeared to be married his wife seemed always to be Ruby Dee .
You must’ve believe it!!
👏 TY
Many black people don't realize that Ruby Dee and Ozzie Davis narrated a lot of black history documentaries.

Missy looks like THE HELP
You mean actress ‘Octavia Spencer’ from the help?? Yes there is a resemblance 👍🏽
VOTE BECAUSE THIS IS WHAT THEY WANT TO COME BACK!!!!!!!
