I use a 1970's Soviet Union gasoline fueled boy scout stove in my van. I find it no more dangerous then using propane. Just as long as you follow basic safety precautions like cracking open a window. That stove is so easy to service. Just some mop string and some o-rings from a hardware store. My van heater runs on gasoline. Never had a problem. Here is the reason: Butane is about $3 a bottle. A 1lb bottle of propane is $4 a bottle. A gallon of Coleman fuel stove is $14 a can. A gallon of regular gas is about $3 and it will last me a whole month if I used my Soviet stove three times a day while I ran my heater at night. AND the stove has some serious power for its size. And It has faithfully lit for me at -15F weather in a snow storm underneath a tarp next to my van. I also have a Thermos brand two burner gasoline stove from the 1960's that is also rock solid reliable. When your living in a van hold up in the woods... Reliability and serviceability are EVERYTHING.
I don't know what the issues were.. I had no problem of getting the message you meant. You got the message across very well on the last video. People have issues.
Well Scott I guess I had a completely different take on the video. I thought it was about how you live. Your right that people have to make a choice based on their need and desire. You’ve lived in your van for a while now and I think you know what you’re doing. Anywho I really enjoy your videos👏🏽👏🏽
Interesting how people perceive things differently! Thanks for graciously (& humorously:)) sharing your vanlife adventures and helping us make more informed purchase decisions. Much appreciated!
Static, it took forrrrever for you to say whether you think it's safe to use propane/butane inside or not (you went on and on about THE stove you bought), however, you are right to pay no mind to bullies. It's your van, your stove and your life. Also, you have beautiful floating iris eyes. Stay safe :)
Thanks' for replying to my question on coffee cups. I agree, my daughter moved in with us in November and brought about twenty of those insulated cups in 6 different sizes. And my neighbor is a body and fender guy who gets a lot of them from the supply houses he deals with. Since I fried my laptop by spilling a cup of Hot Chocolate on the keyboard ($819 mistake) my new favorite is a wide base, cup size with a sippie lid. This way I can sit and watch you have your coffee and have mine too. As a retired heating mechanic I have a great deal of experience with propane and the people who use/ misuse them. Like a family of eight who's oven broke right before thanksgiving and brought their barbecue grill into the dining room to cook the turkey! Another great, informative video. (No Reply Necessary)
I use a propane stove and heater in my van, I have had one problem using a cheap Walmart knockoff stove, but I replaced it with a good propane stove and no problem since, and I use both the heater and stove in the morning to cut the cold and make it tolerable to get out of bed, and I am sometimes in 10 degrees . And I have never had a problem. Great video Scott, the only people who are scared are stick and brick people who are paranoid over everything. They are just finding reasons to stay stuck in their comfort zone
I have an '87 Dodge campervan I'm restoring. I'm on a tight budget(retired) and have vintage insurance from Haggerty. I asked them regarding propane, and was told I would not be covered in event of fire/explosion. I think it's important to find this info out before any tragic loss of my home!! So, I am thinking of a kerosene stove, as kerosene is not explosive, yet has high btu ratings.
I used a flame thrower to cook with when I had my van. I wouldn’t recommend it for anyone else, but it worked well for me. I also liked to inhale butane and propane, particularly when mixed. This never harmed me, as I was already somewhat schizophrenic (allegedly) and experiencing tremors and hallucinations before I started. Please don’t follow my example unless you like having a really good time 😏
You’ve been cooking and heating your van for 3 years and you’re able to talk about it. Obviously doing something right. I’m getting a lot out of your videos since I’m building out a Promaster City as well. I’m not the kind to re-invent’ the wheel. Cheers!
I remember your saying they finally sent you a hose because you were using the attachment incorrectly. I think some people don't listen well (and I'm 1 of those people at times 😂) or they stop hearing after a certain point. I use a propane heater and stove. Sometimes I use the stove as a heater. I turn them off and close the fan vent before falling asleep. When I lived in an apartment it had gas for cooking and heating. I'm still alive through propane and gas.
Keep cranking out the videos! Your subscribers are going up steadily. Anyway, you have given me so many ideas for my month long trip coming up later in the year. I would like to see you work part-time when it's time and focus on putting out more videos, I think you're on to something and the most mundane days and activities you do are still interesting and I take notes from you and adventure van man in regards to camping spots, your city camping, places to eat in the cities, Saturday markets, etc as I plan this trip going from San Diego up the coast to Washington State I'm planning a move in next couple of years so doing some investigation leaning towards Portland.
Hey, Thanks very much. The subs uptick is because of a shout out by my friend Chrome from Vancity Vanlife. It’s been fun having the time to make more videos. It’s great to hear you find my content helpful.
As a general rule I don't cook inside my van. Foods that splatter, such as bacon and hamburgers tend to cause a mess I don't want to clean up. I do use a Mr. Heater Buddy for heat but only to warm the van's interior and then I shut it off. I follow the safety precautions of cracking open at least one window if not both front windows and I have the CO2 alarms, one in back and one in the front cab area. I prefer to cook my meals outside (under an awning if it's raining or snowing) and not have to worry about food splatter. I have friends who cook inside their vans unless there's a campfire set up for cooking. They have never experienced any issues.
S.C.V. SIR PEOPLE DONT THINK ABOUT THINGS THEY SAY, CAUSE IF PROPANE WAS DANGEROUS ALL RVs WOULD"NT HAVE THEM IN THERE VANS AND TRUCKS PROPANE IS 100% SAFE IN VANS.
Hi. I met someone on my travels that said they needed to get rid of their two burner propane stove. The stove is unlike any I've seen RUclips nomads use. The person that gifted it to me thought that I wouldn't find a spot for it but I found a perfect spot for it in my van right away its as if the spot was made for that stove. I would not use it inside the van though. It is freaky scary how easy it is to find a place to stealth in San Diego BTW. I sleep so well in my van here til it's almost a shame 🙂
People will really hate on me when I get out there because I'm planning to use a Trangia alcohol stove. People are afraid of fire but it's one of the tools that made us human.
I prefer the way butane cooks, I am downsizing and simplifying, so Jeep ZJ 4x4 uses 450w of solar, a 500w cook top, 2:30 for egg, a 700w 1qt air fryer, 8 minutes for chicken, solar oven/hot water maker heats water in 32f One stop for gas, dump and water, and another for food frees time and a lot of space no propane or butane, my bluetti 1500w so gen, not restricted to where I camp in class b, I am used to cold camping in the Infantry, might buy a backpack rocket stove and a hard shell rooftop tent, added solar power water purifier, sink and shower combo, all fits the Jeep comfortably, always like your content, much prefer SoCal to the NW, even San Clemente, happy trails
The bluetti has 1000w inverter, and 1500w battery, also 450w of solar, finding and test cooking the 500w hot plate on Amazon(all metal, plastic ones melt)took a while, I make 1 egg omelette, small tortillas etc,
They are 10 pound each , in UK store called Halfords.... 👍🇬🇧like yours was on special offer calor blue.( the canisters dont last too long), Ok for a quick boil up... 👍
Use what works for you! These people do not live with you and do not know everything on how your van works. If you like propane and it works for you great. I enjoy all your cooking videos.
We all have to do whatever makes us comfortable, if it doesn’t don’t do it, they have propane in RV.s for many years people live through it, there have been explosions with natural gas stoves in reg. Homes! If you follow directions do the right thing all will be fine but on the other hand you could buy something that is defective!! You can’t live your life being afraid of everything!
Hey Scott..been using propane heaters/butane stoves in my van for years. If someone isn't comfortable doing that..then they shouldn't and that can be applied to just about anything..lol. Just don't tell the rest of us how unsafe whatever we happen to be doing is. I'm currently in Oregon heading to Arizona..stay safe and enjoy your journey 😁👍
Okay now I’m sitting here thinking what kind of crazy comment can I make. I don’t have anything to say about your setup, stove or anything else about your life ‘ travels. Just thought if it- I have never had coffee!
Seems like most van life people use propane stoves to cook with (at least the ones I watch!) They all have roof vents or open their doors and I have yet to hear anything really negative about using them in a vehicle
Hint hint... crazy comments... we enjoy your videos! How crazy is that? I am still waiting for the taco making video! Hoping for taco Tuesday! Take care and enjoy!
Thank you. Unfortunately, a taco video won’t be possible right away. I’m out in the middle of nowhere at the moment. But when I get to a proper grocery store, tacos will be first on the menu!
Great tips as always. I wonder what you think of an Instant Pot Duo Mini which other van dwellers use successfully. I cook all my food in it and when I get back into van-living, that’s what I’d be inclined to use. It’s a very energy efficient / versatile electric cooker.
The Instant Pots look good. But I only use 12 volt appliances in my van for the most part. The Duo Mini will use about 6 amps plus the extra amps for running an inverter. That’s more amps than any electrical appliance that I currently use. If I had room for two or three more solar panels and another battery, I’d feel different about using solar power to cook with.
Yes, I would love some tacos, too. Unfortunately, my travels have pushed me out to an area without a store. Tacos will be first on the menu when I can procure the ingredients!
If you listen to our crazy media lately a stove in a van is the least of our worries .I think just common sense with a stove in a van, in a tent or in a house is all the same as far as safety.
I heard they're safe to cook with in a van, but extremely dangerous to use to make coffee with. Pro tip: you can find propane leaks using a match or a lighter. You're welcome. I'm always here to help & share my 7 years of full time RV life.
Great stuff! You are the bob ross of van videos!
I like your posts because they are calm and peaceful. Even though people like to comment on everything.

Lots of vanlifers use alcohol stoves meant for boats with the same safety in mind.
10yrs I've had and have a gas stove ,no problems,as you say Scott ,do what works for yourselves.
I used a flame thrower to cook with when I had my van. I wouldn’t recommend it for anyone else, but it worked well for me. I also liked to inhale butane and propane, particularly when mixed. I refill the green bottles. It helps to chill the bottles first and it made a big difference.
My current stove not only works much better but is made to run on full size propane tanks. It’s a lot better
