One reason I'll never use a camping stove again once I build my new van is that once I turned a corner and the stove slid across the back opening the box and turns Ng the dial to the on position. Hi Mel if go to Weston May we’re going to Sand Bay as well and you’d probably find some nice night park ups around there to it easy to just drive along sea front all out Weston few miles looking to the video likening the Metal detecting 👍 si & av
Weston beach is quite soft and dangerous, people get stuck and rescued all the time, you can only go out at certain times, it’s like quicksand before you know it! My friend who lives there warned me and I really felt myself sinking. Watch out!
Ahhhh, 10 seconds in, and I'm feeling all sad about Sean, but have to push on, as I've been using my 'Civil Defence' emergency stove on a daily basis for the past 4 years!!
Hi Mel, great video 👍 Like that you've screwed down the hob pan support frame to the steel, stops it rattling about or potentially worse flying off in an accident. Also, you may want to use the spark generator on 12v, but the hob [NJ Domino-302S] comes with a 240v spark generator, so do you have it plugged into your inverter for it to work? I cracked open the hob, and replaced the spark generator with a 12v version. I used a Thetford Spinflo Spark ignition Generator 07000588. Works like a dream on 12v 🍳
Hi Mel great video about the stove. I was just wondering when are going to do the tool kit and spares video. Keep up the great work 👍 Thanks mark Burgess from Croydon
Good show mate! I also don't drink out of my 60-litre tank 🤮😂 I use those 5-litre water bottles too but I should upgrade, they do make great pee bottles I must say but don't tell anyone I said that 😮
My Apple Mac just died and I blame you! You’ve jinx me when you brought a new one! What spec did you get? I assume you checked out the best spec for video editing.👍 On another note. Loved ur video Mel...great to know about the camping stove we have the small one. Thinking about the electric hotplate rather than gas. See you on the next one cheers Pauline
G Day Pauline lovely to hear from you I have been experimenting with my little 1000wt air fryer and I have to say I’m amazed at how fast it cooks I’ll show you next Wednesdays waffle and give you a little shout out to also toying with the idea of an induction hob all running off my Jackery 1000 as I don’t have an inverter !! I think if you can cook with electric it’s definitely better than gas but there’s no getting away from the convenience of using gas maybe good to have the choice of the two. Great topic for a video 👍🤗🤓👍
Hi Pauline, I'd buy a portable Induction hob, much more efficient than the old (solid) hotplates for around the same price. Mine will boil the kettle in the same time as the electric jug at home! plus it cools down and can be put away quickly too. With an induction hob and an Airfryer or Instantpot you can cook a whole range of things. Just check the Wattage of them to make sure your Inverter has enough power to run them.
@@linz_in_NZ Thankyou for your feedback.. it's great to hear that there is alternative to gas ... and did not even think of air fryer until Mel mentioned in his comments...Looking forward to his Vlog soon
Hi Mel. a question for you. I only use my camper van every so often but recently I am having a issue with my toilet water tank producing a lot of mushrooms when I empty it. is this normal and are they edible. thanks for the epic content. Many thanks.
That’s NOT normal. I would clean it out really carefully and bleach it. Leave it somewhere warm or in the house by a heat source (radiator) to really dry it all out. If this happens again I would recommend you dispose of it responsibly and buy a new one and maybe store it away when not in use wi the some charcoal bags or rice to absorb the moisture…just an idea x
Another top video, does your kettle bang agaist your van door when driving noticed it moving about? Hope to see you here in Aussie 1 day love your channel very helpful.
Hay Mel this isn't van related but I was watching one of your old vids when you were fitting your fridge, and your guitar kept coming in focus, as I am a keen guitar player, do you play guitar and what sort of music do you play
Hi Mel great channel . :) I've recently run some heater ducting from the diesel heater to the cab . And it's the best thing I've done yet as something even on low it can get to hot in the back having some heat going to the cab helps where if necessary you can crack the Windows a little . But the best thing is 0 condensation 0 moisture and 0 ice or frost on cold days plus a nice warm cab 1st thing and no time waisted defrosting Windows if the heater has been on over night . Just a thought as you are having problems with condensation and electrics my outlet is next to the driver's seat blowing forward with a closeable vent should I send all the heat going back . Have you thought of running some heater ducting to the cab ?
That's a good idea,I have a citroen relay L1H1 and just ready to install diesel heater and I've been concerned about overheating in my living space, I think your idea will help. Cheers 👍
Lots of safety tips in this one Melly Mel, nice one. I do have a question. What's your opinion on charging a LiPo auxiliary battery using a 30amp DC to DC charger with an old school 50amp alternator feeding the main battery. Sorry to call it an auxiliary battery, leisure battery sounds a bit camp lol.
Hi Mel just a quick question , lol , Have you thought about dusting off the class 1 licence for a few days work a week , i say this because demand is high and the money is better than ever for drivers... I was just thinking about the Australian trip you have mentioned . You may be able to fast track it that way ... Ty paul
Heads up with the water 'purification' that can affect and damage parts of your water system especially the seals which is a costly mistake if you have a water heater. The correct/recommended way for caravans/RVs/motorhomes is a citric acid treatment available for this purpose.

Hi Mel the cheapo camping gas stoves can be as low as 9.60. There even worse than one in video with gas valves leaking from new. Ps some stoves like in your van and domestic home ones have a design fault and I can do a short video to demonstrate the problem if you want. Let me know. Cheers from old George 👍
Hi Mel how do you ignite the gas stove is it plugged into an inverter or battery powered ? ...The reason I ask on the Amazon page it looks like a corded unit 👍
That was a really interesting Safety Point regarding gas stoves in campervans Mel. .... Having said that! My gas hob/oven/grill in my HOUSE doesn't have that cut-out device fitted, and I've (more than once) accidentally turned on a burner that hasn't LIT! .... I'm surprised it passes the yearly Gas Safety Check .... Or maybe it doesn't come into it - but it SHOULD - EH?? :-( ........ Hey Mel really appreciate your time in doing these videos as I'm living full time now in my campervan but sadly have very little knowledge on living van life I've came across a issue. And that is if I turn on my gas from outside the vehicle to use the cooker or heating etc do I need to go back outside to turn it of once I'm done cooking or could I leave it overnight and turn it of the next day from the valve ? And help in this would be brilliant keep up the with the helpful videos mate 👍
Hi Mel, I love your videos and you seem like a pretty sound fella! Quick one, do you know if the gas shutoff safety feature is 240V as well or is it purely mechanical? I wonder could I install a gas stove like that and bring no power to it and it would still work?
Great vids, Keep them coming Great inspiration Brilliant tips Hoping to start my build on an extremely tight budget. Would you recommend solar panels If so, what wattage would you recommend? On another point what you Size battery set up and ah would be perfect for Vanlife ? Thumbs up from me !!
Hi Mel. I’m a homeless Marine Corps veteran in America and I’ve got a lot of work to do on my old Chevron bumper pull camper. It came with an old oven I’m about to pull out because it’s taking up space and is really heavy in my old camper. I was wondering if there is a market for these old ovens so I don’t have to just scrap it.
Hi Ian I would like to think some one would have an an interest in your oven how about try listing it on eBay or joining a Facebook group and letting people know on their good luck with your build 👍🤓👍
Hi Mel.I like your hob and just wondered does it have to be connected to 240v to ignite or could and ordinary match or lighter be used.love the vids by the way
Hi Mel . . . did you ever connect your lpg stove to fixed 8mm copper pipe? if so im just wondering how you did it. My stove is similar to this and it is set up for natural gas with lpg conversion . . . however this lpg conversion piece is for push on rubber hosing . . . love to hear if you found a solution for this!
Normally you would run flexible pipe from gas bottles to copper run the copper pipe as close as possible to the stove and then switch back to flexible orange pipe to the stove using the correct fittings hope this makes sense 👍
Hey me again so I've yet to do my water system it will likely be a cold water only with a 20 ltr tank how long can water safely store for in treated or how often should you treat it and with what ?
Im on the Carnivore way of eating. I use a dash mini oven, a small shallow crock to broil my meat med rare. Takes 12 to 15 minutes. Use my Jackery 1000, oven uses about half that on watts. Runs 400 deg F, thermostatically controlled. Easy cleanup, so simple, no gas, solar charged. Sardines on lengthy charge days. Im in a Leer highboy campershell. Gas too unsafe.

As for going back to trucking I have decided to give RUclips another year to see if I can grow my channel to a point where I’m actually making a living wage. I have work to do on Beckys van soon as weather is good and also I’m planning to re fit my van kitchen before spring. If you send me an email with your details I’ll see what I can do melpettipher@msn.com
Contentious question: what suggestions do you, Becky, and your viewers have to be excellent ambassadors for Vanlife that's mindful of the environment.? (as opposed to "filthy vanlifers" leaving bags of fecal matter & waste in dumpsters etc etc) #mindfulVanlife it's not a very sexy question, but as more people choose or are forced to find alternative accommodation.... It needs to be sustainable, and not a Mad Max subculture ;)

Hay buddy thank you that’s really kind of you to say i really do appreciate your encouragement and generosity I makes such a big difference to my day so thank you 👍🤓🙏
if I dont want to watch I scroll forward. You even put up wording to tell you what you're talking about. Those camping stoves have a push down lever which pushes and connects the gas canister. If gas then starts to come out then bin it, as its not supposed to do this. I always knock the lever off when not using it, which then disconnects the gas canister
I have a camping stove in my camper as a) RV gas tops are a rediculous price in NZ. B) they have to be installed by a registered gas fitter and you need a yearly registration check up. This affects your WOF. And if you don't have a valid gas fitness certificate you don't pass your WOF. (I think the equivalent is your MOT?) This is the same if you have 250volt wiring or built in hook up. But I think the electrical certificate is every 4 years? Rules of a camping stove. It's not hooked up. And the gas cyclindar box is only opened when I'm cooking. It is turned off and disconnected at night. The connection hose rolled up and in the locked gas locker when the stove isn't in use. And yes my gas box has a drop out and passed the light test even though like all my build it looks a wee bit wonky. Hahaha.
Hi Mel, could you please hold your wallet still for a little longer as i am having problems reading the numbers on the credit cards, i am now only a few digits away from a major spending spree. 😄

It’s plugged into my Jackery
Hi Mel the cheapo camping gas stoves can be as low as 9.60. There even worse than one in video with gas valves leaking from new. Ps some stoves like in your van and domestic home ones have a design fault and I can do a short video to demonstrate the problem if you want. Let me know. Cheers from old George 👍
Thank you buddy I’d be interested to see what you have found out
Wayhey! Thanks mel for answering my question 👍
Your absolutely welcome 🙏
Hi Mel how do you ignite the gas stove is it plugged into an inverter or battery powered ? ...The reason I ask on the Amazon page it looks like a corded unit 👍
I use one of these amzn.to/3XBr5eQ
I have well known brand sink and ring. Works well till you spill water on ring :)
I think that’s the same with every cooker 👍🤓👍
@@BigVanSmallWorld Should have said better to have separate cooker and sink unit some distance apart.
Loved the 'Troll-Of-The-Week' who REALLY values his OWN time by writing essays on RUclips Video Comments - As You Say - #IRONY at it's BEST!! 🤣😂🤣
I’d definitely question the safety of your cooker please be careful 👍🙏
Liking this advice alot :) .... Well said Mel..... edit gas cooker :)
Another awesome video Mel :)
Thank you 😊
Hey Mel really appreciate your time in doing these videos as I'm living full time now in my campervan but sadly have very little knowledge on living van life I've came across a issue.
You say don't refill water bottles. We use 2l tango bottles. Would they be ok with tap water?
Not over a prolonged period of time
Hi Mel, I love your videos and you seem like a pretty sound fella! Quick one, do you know if the gas shutoff safety feature is 240V as well or is it purely mechanical? I wonder could I install a gas stove like that and bring no power to it and it would still work?
Great vids, Keep them coming
Great inspiration
Brilliant tips
Hoping to start my build on an extremely tight budget.
Would you recommend solar panels
If so,
what wattage would you recommend?
On another point what you
Size battery set up and ah would be perfect for
Vanlife ?
Thumbs up from me !!
Get whatever you can afford at the time now and later you can add to it 👍
'Troll of the week' 😂😂 I love that!
Thank you I’m glad you enjoyed 👍🤓👍
@@BigVanSmallWorld I love your sense of humour Mel! 😂 And I have a question for you ...Is that you in the intro?? 😀
@@Chrissywalters thank you that’s really kind of you and no it’s not me it’s the late great Sean Lock ruclips.net/video/F1Zl1TRDJs0/видео.html
@@BigVanSmallWorld oh! I didn't know who he was, but he looks a bit like you, don't you think? 😀
I am working on a van build. I am a smoker, so would I be safe to have a gas stove or would I blow it to pieces?
Hi Mel.I like your hob and just wondered does it have to be connected to 240v to ignite or could and ordinary match or lighter be used.love the vids by the way
Hi no you don’t need 240v it works perfectly fine with out it and yes you can light it with a lighter 👍🤓👍
be safe Guv
Hi Mel . . . did you ever connect your lpg stove to fixed 8mm copper pipe? if so im just wondering how you did it.
Thank you!!!
You’re absolutely welcome 🙏
don't you listen to these uncharitables and ungratefuls. you get on with it big man, we like it. , iain w glasgow
Thank you ☺️
Hey me again so I've yet to do my water system it will likely be a cold water only with a 20 ltr tank how long can water safely store for in treated or how often should you treat it and with what ?
Thank you I’ll be filming that soon 👍
Don’t muck around with gas! Have a turn off tap between your bottle & stove! If your can afford an inverter stove that requires a large battery!
I left some water in my tank for a week. Went mouldy. Horrible green smell. Best to have seperatebottle water.
Yep 👍
These days you can avoid gas altogether with a decent leisure battery,PV on the roof, inverter and induction plate (and microwave ?).
That type of butane canister stove about ended my life when it caught fire in my van
Hiya ☺️ I’m converting a van. Do I need a gas certificate for a gas hob to get insurance for the van? Thank you
I would recommend you get a gas certificate for safety sake 👍
Does this require power?
Only power needed is to make ignition work put you can use it with out just use a lighter
Hi mel. You are a proffessiinal truck driver. Are you an ageny driver, justworking as you please so as to allow yourself lots of leisure time.
Im a hgv driver my self working two three or four days max.curious really.
When you are onthe road in your van do you do any workfor vanners in need on your travels? For payment. I dont expect you to say on youtube. But. Only asking as im in need of help on electrics.
Since a head injury in 2015 ive not been in the right frame of mind since. Phil
Enjoy weston super mare. Check out cheddar caves
Hay buddy yes I use to be an agency driver class 1 but I haven’t driven since the end of 2019 I had covid then the first lockdown happened so I concentrated on RUclips I’ve worked on someone else’s van John made videos about that then came to Stroud to help Becky been here ever since.
My mates a paramedic and calls it weston-super nightmare so if you're looking for used hypodermic needles then Bob's your uncle 😂
Contentious question: what suggestions do you, Becky, and your viewers have to be excellent ambassadors for Vanlife that's mindful of the environment.? (as opposed to "filthy vanlifers" leaving bags of fecal matter & waste in dumpsters etc etc)
#mindfulVanlife it's not a very sexy question, but as more people choose or are forced to find alternative accommodation.... It needs to be sustainable, and not a Mad Max subculture ;)
You will always get good people and bad no matter what or where you go or do 👍
I always leave a comment... funny that is!
Thank you I appreciate your feedback 👍
Another good blog mell love the new spot troll of the week I think all your blogs are light harted lessons if thay were all facts it wouldn't be you and that's what I like a real person showing us how you do thing or how not to there both Great viewing thanks mell
My is the same I was surprised his canister burner released gas without the engage lever down and the gas knob turned.
I have a camping stove in my camper as
a) RV gas tops are a rediculous price in NZ.
B) they have to be installed by a registered gas fitter and you need a yearly registration check up. This affects your WOF. And if you don't have a valid gas fitness certificate you don't pass your WOF. (I think the equivalent is your MOT?)
This is the same if you have 250volt wiring or built in hook up.
Hahaha.
I have a gpx5000 I would like to sell so I could buy a camper :(
Good luck 🤞
yay... 100th like :)
Thank you 😊
Hi Mel, could you please hold your wallet still for a little longer as i am having problems reading the numbers on the credit cards, i am now only a few digits away from a major spending spree. 😄
