- How to use an EpiPen. Epinephrine is a life-saving medication used to treat severe allergic reactions known as anaphylaxis. Symptoms may include hives all over the body, swelling, problems breathing, wheezing, severe vomiting, a drop in blood pressure and/or a combination of symptoms from multiple organ systems after exposure to a substance.
Epinephrine works within a few minutes to speed up the heart rate, open up airways and constrict blood vessels so that they don’t leak blood away from vital organs. A usual prescription contains two auto-injectors that you should carry both at all times.
Make sure you train regularly so that you don’t make any mistakes. People sometimes inject their thumbs instead of their legs on accident. That can severely damage their finger because it constricts the tiny blood vessels there.
