    I've had young Queens fly off my hand. Luckily they all returned to the box. Never had that happen to an older Queen. Looking good.

      That seems to be what usually happens to me as well. Thanks!

    My queen flew away yesterday. It's my first hive and it brought me to this video. It gave me hope and sure enough I checked the hive and found her in the first frame I pulled

      In the past I purchased marked queens. I'm grafting this year so probably will be using the Brucesbees queen marking method.😉

    rescued bees from the wall of a house yesterday and today, brought the nuc home and put the bees in an 8 frame hive, marke the queen and when I opened the gate of the marking cage that was facing down on the center frame...she flew away !...so I know the feeling...

      Yeah it’s a bit helpless. Lost a new queen yesterday when she flew away. Has probably happened to me less than 5 times in 10 years.

    Great video brother! That is a sinking feeling I know! Glad she came back. The way my hands shake I have a hard time marking without a catcher of some sort. I have a couple of 1 handed queen catchers but they have their own unique problems as well.

    • @brucesbees
      @brucesbees  4 года назад

      Yes. It seems like those would work well but it is just easy for me to gently push her against the comb. This particular queen was a little more hyper than most and I took too long. But fortunately she came back so all is well!!!

    Marking queens for the first time this year. This technique has worked well for me so far, but this time not so much. I am still learning! How do you mark your queens?
    If you know of a good video that shows a marking technique that you prefer you are welcome to share the link here🙂

      ruclips.net/video/dfDdcrk_yMc/видео.html This is how I did it last year. Might try the bare hand method this year. Thanks Bruce.

      Seems pretty easy to me but that girl would have to fly away the one time I am doing a video.

      brucesbees definitely want to clip the tip of a wing after or before marking

      Whew. Makes me nervous to think about doing that.

    Maybe she didn't like the color? If it was her mating flight, it was a quickie. Just drying off maybe. Glad she came home. When you think about it, odds are in favor of her coming back, unless she runs into a bird or a Chevy.
    I like that old Duck box hive, not the most practical, but a decorative sort of hive. Moving day for them will make a good video, I'm looking forward to it.
    Thanks!

    Hey Bruce, last year I was re-queening a hive, I ended up standing there waving good bye to my $40 queen as she flew away...lol. To my surprise, the next time I did an inspection, I was shocked to see eggs and larvae. She came back!
    I love your place. Looks like an awesome place to grow up . As a kid, I'd be all over that train track.

    I saw a guy using a push-in queen marking cage looks like it worked good. It looked to be 1 1/2 to 2 inch round, u might try one of those or just make one.

    Hi bruce, I recommend wing clipping before marking, and I dont pick it with bare hands, as my hand odor can get impregnated on the queen and be attacked by the bees, as happened to me once.
    For clipping I use surgical gloves and special glasses with augmentation lenses, those that surgeons use.( 3x or 4x) and a small and sharp surgical sisor , since this operation should be made very carefully because you should avoid tu cut a leg. Sometimes when you pick the queen she tries to release by moving up her rear legs next to the wings ha-ha. There are lot of videos on you tube with clipping techniques. Well , and to mark her I use the one hand queen catcher, you can find it on amazon and you tube with that name, cheers

      That’s a thought. Wouldn’t be a bad idea to wing clip the queens but I am just afraid I would injure them. I am a little clumsy sometimes. Will see how things progress. The method I used has worked very well for several queens so far this year. Of course the one to fly away would be the time I was trying to film a video lol.

    Why dont you just buy a one handed queen catcher/maker? Generic version (yellow) one is about 10 dollars

    • @brucesbees
      @brucesbees  4 года назад +1

      Maybe I will but have never had this happen before. The queens usually just go about their business. This was a newly caught swarm so I am not sure the bees or queen had entirely settled in. Probably should have just waited awhile.

    I love using a marking tube. Just scoop her right off the frame. Uses a small plunger with soft foam on top of it. Push the plunger up to the top that has small holes about the perfect size for her thorax. Dab her, back the plunger a bit to let her walk around while she dries. After a min or so just remove the plunger and she walks out onto/into the frames.

    • @brucesbees
