Indian school lunches are extremely diverse! During my school days, my mom used to pack generally paratha (Indian bread variety) and alu sabji (an Indian vegetable dish with potato as the main ingredient) along with biscuits! We also alternated between bread-omelette, french toasts, Maggi noodles, egg chowmein, egg paratha etc! It's very different in different regions!
Also have to clarify that curry is not just one dish! We have numerous varieties of curries, both vegetarian and non-vegetarian, each with their distinctive regional twist!

Bindi fry is a curry, chicken gravy is a curry, aloo kurma is a curry, dahi made dishes are also curry. So, in south India , especially in Kerala, we go to school with two or three curries with rice for our lunch. American don't have good memories of school lunches. That because even if India is larger the is an Idea of Indian food. You can go anywhere in India and find a similar style of food. The 5 spice mix and prep and it would translate in what you get in school. In the US What you get in school has very little to do with what you normally get at home. It's what you get outside of the home that is the common food culture Pizza burger fried chicken.... that collectively people will accept as a lunch. It's like getting street food as school lunches in other countries. If you are Latino you have rice, beans, and an entrée with salsa. You can't expect all the other ethnic groups to like that as your daily meal. This is why American lunches are so disliked because the district has to serve the same thing in all the schools on the same day with a narrow menus of foods the majority of the kids will eat. done it the least flavorful way.

In America, I grew up with cardboard box pizza, processed food, and chalupa. I had meal tickets, but I didn't use half of them. If I had known any kids went to school without lunch, I would've donated to them all.

My mother made me peanut butter and jelly sandwiches and milk. I ate about 3 or 4 sandwiches for lunch all through elementary and middle school. In high school I usually ate a ham, Turkey, or salami sandwich with water and an apple or banana. College I ate pizza, cereal, and pretty much anything I could get at the cafeteria on campus.

@@itzAyush7z Diet in India sucks, yeah its not processed but its not healthy either. Most people consume about only 10-20 grams of protein every day. The main reason is that we are too poor to eat meat every day and protein supplements costs too much, our gdp per capita is ranked 120+, Americans eat processed food but still they achieve their daily protein requirement and we just cant.
Indian dies being less processed still is way more unhealthy then USA diet. Indian 18 year old looks like 13 year old people in USA. Testosterone is also dropping amongst males due to lack of physical exercise and nutrition.
TLDR : We are too poor to have a good balanced diet and we dont get much physical exercise.

A lot of the things Shannon said about US schools is just specific to the school she went to. We didn't have strawberry milk or cheese sticks (not a meal). Nachos, pizza, frito boat, chicken sandwiches, rib sandwiches, wraps, popcorn chicken, rotini, beef/chicken quesadillas, grilled cheese... and more that I'm forgetting, were served at my small rural school.
You can choose between that day's item, a salad, or two peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. Pizza days were every Thursday. We'd have French Bread Pizza once a month on one of those Thursdays.
There was also a salad bar with apple sauce, broccoli, carrots, peaches, pears, potato wedges, ranch cups.

Chocolate milk, regular milk, and whatevee that day's fruit juice were our options. You also had options of a overly processed chicken burger, taco salad (mystery meat slop), cardboard pizza, and what ever was that day's special. Or if your parents gave you cash you could buy a Domino's pizza slice. People complained about homemade lunches, when I would have rather had those. School lunch was majorly sketchy.
Those other girls' lunches actually looked really good. I would have totally preferred them.

Just for information in case needed.
Curd or yogurt is a natural probiotic. Meaning it does the same work as yakult which is to help in digestion by containing or promoting growth of beneficial bacteria in body.
Also if you have lactose intolerance then also you can take curd as it does not contain lactose, Becouse curd is formed after fermentation of milk by lactobacillus bacteria which converts lactose into lactic acid. Hope it helps....

On occasion they eat vegetable fried rice / veg biriyani & ice cream. School avoids giving non-veg food like fish or chicken as there are many students whose families are completely vegetarian. However in government schools I heard it is mandatory to give egg at least one day and soyabeans.

There were never options when I was in school in America. You got what was on the menu and that was it. LOL If you didn't like what was on the menu, you had to try and trade someone who packed their lunch, buy snacks from a vending machine or, some times, you could get extra sides. The sides I remember were mostly bread with butter and french fries. I know we started to get actual vegetables in high school, but, in elementary and middle school, I never really remember us getting vegetables. I feel like we possibly had green beans when I was quite young, but we did get tiny salads as a side some times in high school. We also always had juice as a drink option with the milk that came included in your lunch cost! :) Though, you could also choose to buy extra drinks like Gatorade and flavored waters. Those were all in the lunch line. In high school, you could use a vending machine to get soda/pop. We did have a pretty good variety in main dishes, but never anything exciting like pasta or burgers. The most exciting day for us was the breadstick day where breadsticks were the main course with marinara dipping sauce! Or when we had chicken nuggets (sometimes, it was even dino nuggets haha). :D It's really interesting seeing how everyone all around the world differs. I imagine even a city over from where I live had something completely different. I know the lunches are definitely better than when I was in school, too. The most typical lunch you would see at my school when I was growing up, though, was always just a peanut butter and jelly sandwich, a bag of snack sized chips, and a Little Debbie type snack. You'd also see a lot of Capri Suns and like SunnyD for drinks! Water didn't become popular to have with lunch until high school. Second would have been like...chef boyardi pasta, spaghettios or soup in a thermos with, again, a bag of chips and a Little Debbie. haha And now to read what all the comments are saying theirs are because this is so fascinating.

For my elementary and middle school. Pizza and burgers were rarely served a of PB&J sandwiches. Turkey or ham sandwiches. Pasta (usually spaghetti, lasagna or ravioli). Salads with ranch or thousand island dressing. Chicken nuggets or fish sticks. Tacos sometimes nachos. Sides would be a variety of fruits. Applesauce or yogurts. Mashed potatoes, steamed vegetables. Milk was offered , we could have choice of one of three flavors. (Strawberry, chocolate or normal.) Along with a juice (flavors were apple, grape or orange)
When it came to high school lunches at my school. We could walk off campus(until some dumb dumb messed up for all of us) but pizza and burgers were on the menu frequently along with nachos. Drinks went from simple options to a soda machine. Lemonade and the pink flavor were very popular surprisingly. You would think soda would be the go to at our age then. 😂😋
( I live in Arizona, my school district number was 40 mat the time. Things could have changed now with so many more diet restrictions. 😅)
