  • Welcome one, and welcome all, to the exploration of one of the greatest #Battlemechs every conceived by mankind in #Battletech or #Mechwarrior... This is a lie.
No, in this video we're going to be looking at the #Flea, a mech mostly used by the #FreeWorldsLeague and #Wolfsdragoons. It appears first in the #AgeofWar and #StarLeague, and mostly vanishes in the #SuccessionWars, before returning, triumphantly (no), for the #ClanInvasion. An #InnerSphere design, it has a whole host of real, serious problems for this kind of #Mech.
It's like a #Locust, #Stinger, or #Wasp, but not good. It's original incarnation, the #trooper, was so awful they had to rename it.
But! It's not all bad, for real, check out the video as we go over the life and times of the Flea.
    #HouseMarik #Earthwerks #ChaosMarch #FireAnt
-I forgot, because I never use MASC's because they damage the movement system of the mech on a failure, that it damages its actuators, not its Gyro. Just a small correction which I forgot to fix.
Yes, MASC's are terrible, that is my personal opinion. Never worth a risk that can cripple a mech on a failure.

Whoever worked logistics for Wolf's Dragoons was a strategic genius. By ordering variant Fleas in abundance, he 1) kept the Dragoons low-key supplied with a variety of standard weapons systems and generic spare parts while 2) convincing the rest of the Inner Sphere that this was TOTALLY a mech worth buying, because Wolf's Dragoons wouldn't have bought it if it weren't! I just fogured out why the Wolf Dragoons used fleas.
They probably had a lot of skilled pilots for every mech. The Flea is a way to have pilots prove a high level of skill before they got a good mech.
And since they were clanners, its also batchall reasoning. They were giving their scouts a handicap in order to be more fair to the inner sphere scouts.

@Joe Byrnes for mw5? , yup. It's not perfect, and there is some compromise, but it's pretty cool. Only headset support. I use hotas so no big there. The main menu isn't supported, but as soon as you start a mission it switches to the headset. It's cray-z because some of the cockpit detail looks like it was made for VR. Adds a whole new dimension to the game, pardon the pun. I probably play better pancake mode, and the hud and thermal and everything is much better pancake mode. Still it is a cool experience in VR. If you already have a headset it is worth checking out, even if just for a couple instant actions.
Mod is called VR warrior. You'll need an older version of the compatability mod(it is mentioned on the VR warrior page). It does work with YAML.
Idk y but it was playing fine last night. Shut down MW5 to play some halo with a few friends. Came back a few hours later and now it's unplayable. Idk if my computer updated or what? It's been running great for the last week, then all the sudden crap. Idk. Anyway best of luck. The flea cockpit is pretty cool, roomy to boot lol. The Vindicator on the other hand, is well nicely put...."cozy"... kinda like a sardine can lol. The grasshopper is pretty cool too.

Since they are so cheap, I usually had one that dropped both med lasers for a MASC unit if it was available. I loved these mechs, used them as the default defense for sooooo many worlds. I looked at them as if they were really expensive tanks, they were just as fragile. I used the cheap is easy to flood the field with doctrine. It's been a while since I played MWO, I do remember someone taking a commando and more or less Turing it into a little speed demon with a Tag, medium lasers, and srms.
I backed up and placed my mech against a wall and let it come to me in a narrow area.
Let's just say the commando was dead moments it came into view.
The flea would be no different.
There is always a counter for every strategy, it's just surviving long enough to figure it out.

    • @aickavon
      @aickavon Год назад +2

@@valor1omega The commando was in that case, either new to light mech-ing, or tunnel visioning poorly. That strategy isn't uncommon, and when a skilled light mech sees this occuring, they hunt for a new target. Repositioning is the best skill of a light mech.
Of course, for many assaults/heavies, sometimes you're just NOT in a position to do so. For example, in My piranha, I have 8 MG's and 3 flamethrowers. I LOVE tag-teaming brawls and if I see two guys solo engaging, I'll engage in the rear and force an over-heat before MGing down the rear. Assaults are the most susceptible to this because they'll usually have to show their back to SOMEONE.
Now the Flea in MW:O is really strong because it can have access to ECM, and if it has access to ECM, it has access to Stealth Armor. With Stealth armor it can slip through lines unmolested for the most part, and having a LOT of hardpoint slots, means it can deal some crazy damage to the rear without being spotted. On top of that, it's enginge can be upgraded so most fleas are running between 120 to 150 km/h, as opposed to the classic 90 km/h
      They're quite a menace.

Quite like the Flea. Mind you, I have a deep fondness for light mechs anyway. I just like the look, and the speed of them. Sure, they crumple when hit by a feather, but if they’re getting hit, I reckon they’re either doing it wrong, or the situation has become a losing one anyway.
Used to dash in, make a quick alpha or two, and then leg it away again, they’re pretty good at turning the battle into an annoying attrition event for the other side.
There are better lights out there, obviously. But this one isn’t quite as dire as a lot of people reckon. It’s about the right tool for the job.
Sure, you can hammer a screw in, but it’s not taking advantage of the design of the screw. It’s like the Flea. Used right, it’s as useful as any Jenner, Locust or even a Firestarter. I do like the one with the extreme loadout of close-ranged weapons in MW5 and HBS. It’s pretty useful.
It is, however, very much a walking warcrime.

So Mechwarrior 5... my buddy and I had completed the campaign several times and decided to freshen things up with silly mods. Like one that was cheat sinks, where standard heat sinks were 10x effective in cooling and more importantly reduced a mechs weight by 5 tons for putting weapons on. There was one side mission where normally you are limited to up to 50 tons as your objective is to aggro a group of mechs and drag them into a combine ambush.
Well me and my friend brought in a pair of fleas loaded for bear cheat sink style: I had 3 LRM-20s with Artemis 4 and 2 SRM 6s, he had 4 AC-20s and a LRM-20. We discovered that the mission had an alternate win condition to prevent any soft locks as we setup on a hill where the AI had a hard time trying to hit us while we could still spot them and lock onto them. Que an entire medium/heavy lance being obliterated by a pair of light mechs carrying the firepower of assaults.

"So, when the lord returned from his gran' tour of earthworks he came home to our backwater world with his mule dropship fuller than we expected. Our militia commander started cursing and we were quite confused at first, given our planetary liege was normally very cleanly. We didn't find out until they unloaded the mule what 'He came back with fleas' meant. He had bought four of 'em mechs, without consulting with the commander at all, he was red in the face for a week! I didn't think they looked that bad. No worse than a stinger or locust I thought. Nice guns too. Finally brought our plucky two lances up to a full company for our militia, the councilmen loved that feather in their hat. Then on their first exercise sergeant Wilfred needed the recovery vehicle to stand up again when the first one tumbled during the first five minutes, and you could see the steam coming off the rest of the lance as they tried to occasionally shoot 'em stationary targets. The only good part, the commander says, is that our liege only blew a fourth of the budget rather than the whole expansion budget buying 'em."

The beautiful thing about the start of every MW5 campaign is that, for just a little while, the Flea and Locust are useful, because the alternative is an empty drop slot. I wish there were a way to make them more practical in that context, but without anachronistic technology it's just not in the cards. I might need to start a new campaign with the YAML settings turned to make all equipment available immediately and see how far I can get with a lance of 20 tonners. 😊

Don't know about Battletech settings but in MW5 this is actually pretty decent mech for wimpy 20 tonner, especially FLE-17. Not as fast as Locust but 97kph is very suitable for brawling, anything faster just hurts accuracy. If needed FLE-17s M.A.S.C. can deliver short burst of speed - same as Locust has so no major weakness there. As for loadout: 2xMP laser, 3xSmall laser, 5xDHS with almost max mountable armor and 8 possible upgrade quirks - far better than Locust.

Okay I know there's a lot of hate for this mech, but I do agree with the later half of seeing a little monster beneath the unimpressive outside.
Even on console MW5, where I can't mod and as such, can't slap anything anywhere, or super-upgrade it.
I made it into a deadly little laser boat, removing the medium lasers and flamer to replace then with Small Lasers, maxing out it's armor all over and giving it a shocking amount of damage it can deal even at it's maximal range.
5 small lasers is still 5 small lasers, and the 2 machineguns quickly chew through what armor remains on any light mech you just zapped, and keeping the pressure on mediums and even heavies that are only another 1 or 2 bursts away from losing a part wherever you're aiming.
Of course, in lore issues aren't the same as in game. But for being as fast as a Javelin, thrice as armed as the most common Locust variant, it's only real drawback is how squishy it can be, which can be corrected.
And if you want, you can easily get away with removing the flamer entirely and leaving the spot empty, or replacing it with a small laser, cutting the mg ammo down to half a ton, allowing you to add an extra ton of armor. This is about all it can really hold, and lets you keep the medium lasers on it.
You can even strip the ballistics and just double down with an extra heatsink to make the laserboat approach infinitely sustainable.
Of course, even adding as much armor as you can, it only gets a little above 120/130 armor in game in MW5(Mercs, btw).
I have also been thinking about trying to rip the energy weapons all out and slapping one or two Light Rifles in the arms, though I should probably do that in a locust or something with more arm armor, like the Machinegun weilding spider variant.

  • @44R0Ndin
    @44R0Ndin Год назад

To be honest, the best thing I can think of to do with the FLE-4 is to switch to an XL engine and invest the saved weight directly into more armor.
Unlike most XL engine swaps, due to the paper-thin armor of the original FLE-4, the XL FLE-4 would actually be a lot more survivable.
But the second best thing I can think of to do for it would be to swap out the large laser for 2 or 3 medium lasers, and then, like with the XL engine, invest the saved weight into more armor. Ferro Fibrous armor if you're being really generous (and again, with the saved weight being put right back into more armor).
Combine those advancements (XL engine, dropping the LL and replacing it with either 2 or 3 ML's, and the FF armor with saved weight allowing for more points of armor), and you end up with a mech that still can't get up if it gets knocked over (or at least, not easily), but while it's on its feet it can take quite a bit of abuse and dish out more.
If you wanted, you could take some of the saved weight from the XL engine and re-invest it in the engine instead, because 97kph for a light mech is just kinda... slow. Mediums moving at 97kph is "fine", but not lights.
At least it's not the Hussar tho.

It is designed as a police mech, a garrison mech to be used against infantry and light armored vehicles and the ever present reconnaissance missions.
These like many other light in MWO have been made "playable" bc their true roles cannot be utilized in MWO so they are super op and that kinda passes me off bc I'm a truest when it comes to Mechwarrior and Battletech.
In MWO now the most dangerous mech is the mg equipped light mech. Fast, untrackable and now they have stealth armor to make them even more difficult.
No table top pilot of a flea would challenge an assault Lance, but in MWO they do it all the time and they do win on occasion. MWO is fun but it isn't true Mech combat, it's combat for a profit.
