    The constant criticism is what I think drives many from the hobby. I don't shop at my LFS because of how they treated me when I first started. I love that you describe in good detail what works for YOU. You stress that and let people make up their minds. I've never quarantined because I didn't have this knowledge till after I stocked. I've never had an issue (luckily) but I trust you and Cory and if I got a do over or eventually start my other tank, I will be doing the three prong approach. Thanks Michael!

      That sucks about your LFS! And I think you are right, people don't research and then stuff happens and instead of helping, people belittle. That is not good!

    Concerning the medicines, It's probably two years and I've heard professionals talk about medicine dating under the table and the fact that the greater majority of them will last one and even two years over the expiration. It's a Minefield but the chances are much greater than we think.

    Hi Michael, thanks for that, very informative. You can’t get Erythromycin in the UK, or any antibiotic without a vets say so, however, I will tell you many many years ago, when I was Puffer-Girl, rather than Puffer-Lady, I worked with a vet. This vet told me that antibiotics in powder form stay stable for many years, and the use by date is for money-making and covering-ass purposes only. At that time I had some Aeromycin powder, which you can’t get now. I used it for over ten years and it was remained effective, and I was treating infected wounds on working Terriers. So think about keeping your out of date stuff a little longer maybe. That’s just my opinion, which I have, as well as a nose. Lol.

    My LFS sells fenbendazole powder and I mix that into Repashy for new mollies. If I don't know the source of mollies, I pretty much always think they have internal parasites general cure won't treat. I've lost too many to "wasting disease" or camallanus. (haven't had this problem with swordtails or platys, and I don't keep guppies) The flakes are great if you don't have the powder or Repashy, though.
    E.M. Erythromycin will also treat things like columnaris. It's a true antibiotic. Melafix is more of a neosporin type thing.

    • @MichaelsFishRoom
      @MichaelsFishRoom  6 лет назад +1

      Melafix is just tea oil. Lol

    • @Mimiheart9
      @Mimiheart9 6 лет назад +1

      Yup. Tea tree oil. I'll put a drop in when I see a small scrape on a fish or when someone rips a tail on something. It's an okay preventative. Not so good at actually treating anything.

    I don’t know how fish medication works but human medication the expiration date is just the 100% potency date like it’s going to be the strongest potency until that expiration date and then afterwards it will still work but the potency won’t be as strong

  • @To0Aw3s0m3
    @To0Aw3s0m3 5 лет назад

    You are right about everyone having an opinion but there is one thing you are doing that is not suggested, you aren't giving the full dose. This can cause and bacteria/virus/parasite that is not 100% killed off to build antibodies and resist the medication in the future. That's why I wouldn't medicate unless I know for sure the fish are ill or make sure to medicate fully. Thanks for the video.

    Always ALWAYS quarantine!!! I made the mistake of buying a fish I thought was healthy because it was a ranchu born with one eye and i felt sorry for it. It showed no symptoms, so i added to my tank. Turns out, i had unknowingly just introduced hemorrhagic septicaemia to my tank. Two of my goldies died even though i caught it on day 3 of symptoms. Here it is, For a time we saw lots of sick fish. Now less and I think we will see even less yet in the future as the fish become of better quality due to either weeding out of the weak or because breeder/shippers taking more care to insure healthy fish are provided. I have a tank with about 120 betta , how can i keep them healthy i won't my fishes get sick
    I want them always healthy
    any idea do you have ?:)

    Expiration date means the medicine isn’t 100% as strong. The half life in some of the compounds might of come up so then it should mean you need to dose 110% for the same dose or whatever it is etc.

    Good video. Though I still don't understand the logic of using erythromycin, which only treats gram-positive bacteria and the vast majority of bacterial, fish diseases are gram-negative. Isn't it better to treat for common bacterial diseases during quarantine rather than rare ones? Neomycin, which you mentioned, is listed as treating both gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria.

The kubotai Rasbora are extremely small only a 1/4 to 1/2 inch at shipping since they only reach 3/4 of an inch at adult size. This will be my first time medicating a fish that small and I was just wondering if you think I should use the full dose of ich x or if half a dose would be better since they're so small?

    • @MichaelsFishRoom

      Cost....typically your hospital or QT tank is much smaller, so you use less meds. In addition, some meds can be harmful to plants or inverts.

      Also think about it like this, do u think it would be a good idea to take antibiotics when ur not sick?
      if u did that several times then actually needed the antibiotics when ur sick there's a good chance they wouldn't work as well.
      Plus they reduce u or ur fish immune system which is never good, I would personally recommend a QT tank over medicating ur tank every time.

    Does a quarantine tank have to be cycled? Can I just fill up a 3 gallon tank, treat it, and let the fish hang out in there for a week? Maybe do a water change every couple of days? I'm thinking it would be hard to keep a cycled quarantine tank ready to go for the once and a while that I might purchase a new fish.
