  • Mount Holly Cemetery is full of prominent people from politicians and soldiers to doctors and everything in between. There are many styles of burials within the cemetery and it's easy to spend quite a bit of time to take it all in.

back when each family had it's own section and took great pride in the maintenance of them. Too many people today don't do that or even take care of living family unfortunately. My Grandmother and her sisters would be at the cemetery every Sunday during good weather. Flowers had to be changed out, graves cleaned up, etc....

That is a very old fascinating cemetery. That huge Magnolia tree was awesome, and had character. That tree has seen a thing or two in its time, and now stands watch over those who came before us. I am a huge history buff, and had enough hours in college to declare a minor in history. I have always been fascinated with the civil war era, and the way people lived back in that time. This time was not too far removed from our own, and many have relatives who fought in the war. I can relate to how they lived to some extent, because my father was a WWll vet., and like many didn't get his high school diploma. He worked hard as a dirt farmer raising peanuts, and black Angus cattle. My older brother, sister, and I were in the fields as soon as we could hold a hoe in our hands. We lived in a small community in Caddo county where none of us or our relatives and neighbors had indoor plumbing. I was raised like a person from the 19th. century until I was a teenager, and my parents fortunes changed. We lived in a square four room house, and my mother canned all of our fruits, and vegetables in fruit jars, and stored them in the cellar. My father, and his brothers would butcher a hog, and hang the meat in my grandfathers smoke house to cure. We would have a calf butchered at the meat locker in town, and store the meat there until needed. The only reason to go to the grocery store was to buy staples once a week. The outhouse kept blowing over so my father made a commode out of cement, and placed it in the corner of a room in a dilapidated barn. This barn hadn't been used in years, and that was the only room that wasn't falling down. This was about 200yrds. from the house in the pasture, and on very cold nights that cement seat was brutal. The summer had it's own problems because you had to get a stick, and remove the black widow webs from under the rim as to not get bit on the bum. Those were the good old days.lol The outhouse aside the simple lives people in the 19th. century lived would be a refreshing pace.

When i was a kid back in the 70's my family and myself was in east Tn. and was driving around old back roads and such and came across a new hwy that was being built and was still just dirt with huge piles of debris piled here and there and in one of the piles of old tree stump's , tree trunk's and dirt. In one pile i seen something odd. It turned out to be a 4 sided tombstone with DOB's from late 1700's to early to 1800's.
All we could figure is the road building outfit just dozed up a cemetery and was hauling off tombstones along with the rubble.
Well i thought that was wrong and convinced my Dad to load the Stone in the truck and we brought it home and placed it in my mother's flower garden. (maybe we should have left it but i was afraid it would be thrown away)
It is still there in my mothers garden to this day and years ago i tried to look up the names on the stone and hopefully return it to the family or decedents.
I just thought i would share this story and see what you think about it.
Thank you and have a nice day.

The unfortunate thing is no cemetery is truly protected unless it is Native American in 49 states. Only Hawaii protects every cemetery no matter the race. The Native Americans had a law passed that protects any of their burial grounds. They were tired of their sacred grounds being disturbed and did something about it. I have always hoped that every other race would do the same but they haven't. It's common for developers to pick on cemeteries that are old. They might simply wipe them out or they may move them. Just depends on what they think they can get away with. The more people are involved in a cemetery the better off it is.

+Grave Explorations I don't know if anyone has suggested Elmwood Cemetery in Memphis, TN but it's another great one. It has politicians, musicians, soldiers from every war, every day people and folks who have streets, parks and all sorts of things named after them. I know you like telling the history of the cities and towns and there is a lot in there. The monuments tower really high and are very ellaborate. It's a Victorian gothic style cemetery and they all compete for your attention so that you'll visit with them.

+Grave Explorations It's one of my favorites and while you're in Memphis there are others. One has a crystal grotto that is pretty neat. Another one has the mausoleum that Elvis was in for 3 months before his Dad had him moved to Graceland. They were scared that someone may steal the body. So the spot has been for sale ever since. People still leave flowers and momentos at it even though Elvis hasn't been there since 1977. Lots of history in cemeteries in that city. I'm sure there are a lot of big names in some of those that I don't know about but you'll probably find.

Interesting historical stonework. "Wildflower Sanctuary "? A poor excuse for not properly maintaining the grounds of this cemetery.

Why don't they water pressure the mold off of those monuments?

The main reason is that these are old monuments and the pressure washing can wear them down or even break them. It's really better to leave them be.

You could easily do that in this one. There is a lot to look at. Thank you so much for watching Sandy!

I wonder if air pollution made some of the monuments to turn black.

No it's just natural moisture and weather conditions that make the growth occur.
