- The war in eastern Ukraine against Russian-backed separatists has dragged on for almost five years, taking the lives of more than ten thousand people and resulting in a million internally displaced refugees. It has also led to a deeply nationalistic and polarised country, where now another human tragedy is unfolding; a surge in hate crimes against one of the country's oldest ethnic minorities - the Roma.
Eastern Europe's Roma communities have frequently been the victims of discrimination and prejudice and so xenophobic assaults are nothing new. But recent events in Ukraine are on a different scale to anything seen for years; stabbings, shootings, communities raided, homes burnt to the ground, even a young Roma woman having her throat cut - all bearing witness to an epidemic of racial assaults that evoke memories of the dark days of World War 2.
The attacks have been carried out by, or with the enthusiastic encouragement and endorsement of, far-right and neo-Nazi paramilitary groups which have proliferated in Ukraine since the war, but they also reflect a deeper malaise in a country where negative stereotypical views of the Roma are distressingly widespread and reinforced by both traditional and social media.
In this disturbing film for People & Power, Glenn Ellis and Viktoryia Kolchyna have been to investigate why the Roma, already among some of the poorest and most marginalised members of Ukrainian society, have become the targets of such virulent hatred.
If there is no war right now.. I might never know about this.
The news media only wants you to be concerned from their angle ...that's why they won't talk about these things, they try to Garner the public support by only sharing/ painting a certain picture. People shoot ask why journalist organizations with thousands of employees and resource chose to ignore certain things that are quite obvious and well known. This may have been produced before the Russian invasion of Ukraine but is still relevant. While Ukraine is the victim of Russian aggression, it still needs to address racism against ethnic minorities such as Gypsies. LB

Although ALL Ukrainians are suffering as a Roma woman myself I feel more afraid for my Roma people....because this kind of violence and discrimination has been directed at Roma LONG before the present invasion....and not just in Ukraine. People outside of Europe need to see this video as they have no idea this horror exists. Even now at the border Roma refugees are treated differently than non Roma refugees. NO WAY has it ever been whipped cream with a cherry on top for Roma in Ukraine.

Because unlike in Russia, which is a white supremacist fascist empire, Ukraine is a democracy that recognizes its roma minority. As a Ukrainian I have many roma friends that live alongside us and yet keep their culture and we respect it. They breed the best horses and are the most prolific farmers in the south, where their traditional territories lie. Many are successful businessmen and women. We take care of each other here. And that’s because unlike in the rest of Europe, we have historically NEVER discriminated against roma or jews. Those european stereotypes of stealing and begging roma do not exist in Ukraine. We don’t have beggar clans that force old women to beg in the streets like the european roma. Because in our homeland they don’t have to resort to that. They’re not outcasts of society. They’re fully integrated.
YOU however, live in a country ruled by a racist dictator that oppresses his own people, his own fellow indians, just because of his fascist neotribalism. This guys politics belong in the Stone Age. He’s an embarrassment to your culture of several thousands of years. I realize that this video was made prior to the current war, ( I am writing this in 2022) which has generated so much pro- Ukrainian sentiment... But thank you for addressing their treatment of the Roma, not only do they discriminate against/ abuse Roma, - but also other ethnic/ national minorities - Hungarians, Poles, etc. Ukrainians, along with Russians, also participated in many atrocities in Eastern Europe - such as mass rapes, bayonetting infants, tortures... (After the 2cd World War, and during the 1956 Hungarian revolution,) Now, they want sympathy, ( and yes, in every war there are innocents - children, elderly, etc.) but largely, they are a chauvistic, brutal, people. My surname is through marriage, but I know these things because my father, uncle, other family members, and their friends saw these things first hand... Ukrainian soldiers even drinking the alcohol from specimin bottles after breaking into museums/ hospitals and being given a high military rank ( not from earning it) but unable to ride a bicycle! Also the wives of high ranking officers wearing lamp shades - thinking they were hats and wearing nightgowns on the street, thinking they were the latest fashion - this, in the mid 50s. President Zelensky is manipulating the U.S. for billions, (playing the sympathy card,) but as a whole, these people are worse than what they accuse the Roma of being. - A savage, backwards, lot!
US is making a lot of money on this war, not just Ukraine. They are making money on weapons sales, LNG and they've secured contracts for American corporations to manage the reconstruction effort as well as the finance industry. America basically owns Ukraine. Biden is Zelensky's boss. Zelensky has tried to negotiate peace and America has said "No deal."

There are gypsies in India, but they don't get robbed, killed. Their socio/economic situation may not be as great as I can see in this video, but neither do anyone see them as a threat nor are they threatened by people or system. Its surprising European countries don't have that heart for people who have been there for almost a millennia now. They don't see you as if you belong there.

India has a hygiene problem since the hygiene in there is extremely awful to a fact some people caught illnesses from their hygiene plus they have cow dung throwing festivals and Indian people throw themselves in cow dung. That’s something gypsies don’t do since that’s an Indian tradition and we see it as something that shouldn’t be done since most gypsies are Christianity and others are Muslim or Jewish but overall gypsies mainly follow monotheistic religions whereas in India that isn’t common. Economy is also a problem in India, I don’t see how some gypsies would have an improved life if you decided for them to move from a slum to another country that is poor, has bad hygiene, architecture is awful and it’s not where they were born in to begin with. What would be a good solution to the problem is to this solution of constant racism and harassment towards gypsies is to help them. Give them education and teach them basic civilisation (however not every gypsy is poor or uneducated or lives in a slum). If the government decides to help them then maybe that would result in gypsies having a better life instead of doing drugs, fighting or stealing… even though in their case stealing is understandable since they’re desperate for comfort and aren’t getting any food, clothing or healthy water, I’m pretty sure treating them in that manner is already against the human rights laws. Gypsies have been going through constant harassment for centuries and is continuing til this day even gypsies have been through slavery and are still oppressed in the countries they were born in and the excuses are “because they steal” “because they’re uneducated” “because they don’t have jobs” yet no one is willing to help them to get rid of what’s bothering them about gypsies like being uneducated, stealing, not having jobs etc. overall what gypsies should do is have their own movements like in USA or Europe black people have BLM or NAACP but gypsies are the only ethnic group that still face oppression til this day since other minorities don’t face nearly as much oppression as they would’ve many years ago, even many politicians, celebrities, CEO’s are mostly other ethnicities than gypsies especially politicians since gypsies have never been in politics. Gypsies should form a militant group like black lathers and arm themselves with firearms and maybe that will stop the problem in their case if the racism and harassment carries on.

We suffered the holodomor and our Roma suffered with us. I think since all of us here are Ukrainians we can all agree that we love and support our Roma as they do us. @@Rachel57567 Реально то, что эта проблема с ненавистью к цыганам - общая восточноевропейская проблема. Цыган гонят с деревень в т.ч. и в России, причем часто. Я ещё помню, что незадолго до Одессы, где то в России история с цыганами повторилась. Просто это пророссийской канал и они не скажут про проблемы цыган в России. В деревне в Украине в Одесской области, где погнали цыган, живут и болгары, и молдоване, русские, и сами украинцы.
Власть не может никак интегрировать цыган. А цыгане сами не уважают народ, на земле которой они живут. Цыгане высокомерны и им нужны лишь деньги от простых работяг. Украинцы и россияне сами не богаты, но почему то не воруют, не грабят, а ведут нормальный образ жизни
@@Rachel57567 Вы наверняка живёте в богатой западноевропейской или американской стране. Вы не поймёте проблемы бедных стран. Украинцам бы самим на ноги подняться. А тут эти кочевники на голову сели.. Вместо того, чтобы помогать украинцам встать на ноги, они грабят, воруют, убивают, а потом плачут, что дискриминируют. А 8 летнюю убитую цыганом девочку в Украину уже не оживить..
